Title: Any Good PC horror games?
Post by: starbug on October 30, 2006, 02:08:03 pm
Is there any really good horror games out for the PC, i love horror(esp the Sci-fi/fighting hell type) games mainly the RPG style of play. The ones i have got are (and got abit bored with)

Silent hill series(really bloody good)
CLive barkers Undying
Doom3
Realms of the Haunting(wish i could get that to work)
Fear(didnt really find that game all that scary)
System Shock2
AVP 2

Are there any other good ones out there to buy at the moment?

You find Doom 3 a good horror game but lack to find FEAR scary? That's like saying a kids crayon drawing is better than a Picasso.

Get the original AvP. Far more dirty-pants inducing than the sequal. Especially the original which didn't allow mid-mission saving. :shaking:

Freespace 2 Open: Transcend (http://hades-combine.com/web/index.php?ind=downloads&op=entry_view&iden=172) by Ransom Arceihn.

And that's not only to show loyality towards FS2_Open, it really gave me goosebumps. Great campaign.

Also play the Sync (http://hades-combine.com/web/index.php?ind=downloads&op=entry_view&iden=37) campaign from same guy.

Fear is a better game than doom butonly freaked me out a couple of times i found that after the first couple of levels it was pretty much the same but it still is a brillant game, i just prefer Doom's storyline alright it isnt well exacuted in the game but thats the kind of fiction i like. Fear has a good storyline but that isnt what i go for its just my taste to be all honest out of all of them i like silent hill 2 the most out of them all, its the only game i have played that has freaked me out every time i play it and i don't know why, i havent even seen all the endings yet. I really did enjoy Transcend, i had to play it about 5 times to figure out what was going on.

My computer class teacher reccommeds a game that I forgot the name of.  :D

It is a really old one, wherein you turn into a cockroach, and have to maneuver through a motel, facing puzzles. Excellent graphics for a decade-old game. Very graphic, very creepy. Memorable scene: a dead rat in a mousetrap that can come alive and eat you if you venture too close. Looks waay too real... *shudders* :shaking:

Can't remember... the... friggin'... name...

Goddamnit, I need a life. I never even played that game and I remembered it by your description (presuming that I'm correct about the game, which is very likely).

Silent Hill 2
(my names James, and at the end: in the hotel where Mary calls it out, I got freaked out...)

PS, Is it wrong to think Marias hot?

@ Dark Hunter: Yup, sounds like Bad Mojo.

I would recommend Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth. It's freaking freaky sometimes. And it's fun to get the hero to commit suicide. :D

That games  in my view, but if it floats your boat, enjoy :D

I hear no mention of the Resident Evil Games here, I found them spooky enough, and in the original I fair jumped out of my seat when the dogs jumped through the window!  :nervous: Freaked me right out!

Then there's Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but that was a little Meh!

and what's that one with the female vampire who slays nazis?? I can't remember the name of it right now?

Seconded. Gamecube remake damn well scared the hell out of me now and then, and Resident Evil 4 was extremely atmospheric in certain sections.

Bloodrayne?

That's the one! Although I would class this one more of an action game than a horror game!

Have you tried Condemned? It's by the same company as F.E.A.R., but (surprisingly) it actually has a decent story and at times excellent atmosphere. You might also be interested in The Suffering and its sequel, but that's less of a genuinely creepy game and more a horror themed action game with some cool stylistic elements.

I'll second Call of Cthulhu; while it starts to get more than a little tedious once you get your hands on a weapon, it's by far the best first person horror game I've come across. Most of the other games I'd care to name have already been mentioned, although it's good to see that for once I don't have to recommend Silent Hill.

i have tried to play the Res games, but they are im my opinion not very good ports to PC, the only console game that to me has ported well to pc was the Silent hill. I was told to avoid Call of Cthulhu by mates, mite start playing undying again, i ave been for ages trying to find Norturne, i remeber playing the demo and loved it. I got blood Rayne but the game kept skipping cutscenes and played at a stupid speed, it was like watching a DVD on fast forward.

I enjoyed all of the Resident Evil games, even the old awful looking ones (for their time, they were quite enjoyable). The first set (1-Code Veronica) could get pretty freaky in some places; RE:4 was more action paced rather than creepy, it's still fantastic and I'm looking forward to the next installment. If you haven't played through these, I'd recommend at least the RE:1 remake, and even RE:CV despite its old, dreamcast graphics. I think they ported it to the PS2 and Gamecube even.

Code Veronica's graphics look pretty decent even now - much better than some contemporary PC games IMO. For me it was the best RE game (though I've only played 2, 3 and 4).

System Shock 2 and Silent Hill 2 mess with your mind like nothing else I've ever come across. Anything else you play will unfortunately be inferior. That said give Call of Cthulhu a try. It's hit and miss but when it hits it hits you between the eyes with a baseball bat. Be warned though, it's extremely difficult. You will need a walkthrough. You will die a lot. You will get frustrated with it.

I dunno... haven't played silent hill 2, SS2 was more stressful, always hunting for ammo.... Undying had some extremely freaking moments (the writing on the wall, the view of the monastry through the pond).

LOL actually the first jump out of the seat scare moment was when i first encountered a Quake fiend.

A good horror game? Any Silent Hill is a start. There's a few been made, like Clyve Barker's Jericho (it looks promising, templars from hell! ;7) and Alan Wake.

Post by: phatosealpha on November 01, 2006, 12:01:48 pm
You know, I didn't care as much for the second Silent Hill as I did the first one.  The plot was too much psychological analysis and "Oh it's on fire cause she was molested, SYMBOLISM" and not enough "OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODWHATTHEHELLISTHAT?".  Didn't care much for the third one either, but that was more because they included instant death traps <> fun.

Title: Re: Any Good PC horror games?
Post by: Ransom on November 01, 2006, 12:36:09 pm
Right, because the first game didn't rely on symbolism at all. Nuh-uh.

The reason the second game is generally considered the best is because it took emphasis away from the (rather boring, frankly) cult and focused its story on the characters. Silent Hill was never about shock value.
Title: Re: Any Good PC horror games?
Post by: phatosealpha on November 01, 2006, 05:26:31 pm
Use it, yes.  Rely on it, maybe.  Hit you with bad psychological symbolism like a goddamned episode of Dr. Phil tied to a 2x4 the way the second one did?  Not even close.

The first used it's symbolism with subtelty, and it's plot left large portions unexplained - perfect in a game not about shock value, but the atmosphere of fear of the unknown (thus the fog and darkness).  The second felt the need for in-your-face exposition about how the monsters were manufactured by the characters own psyche - of course, it never bothered to touch on how the hell their psyche's managed to manifest anything, let alone walking freudian symbols with giant swords, because that would've taken the focus away from the characters (or rather, their rather one dimensional past agonies) and back onto the fact that some majorly weird **** is going on.

Perhaps the original's lack of exposition was more a function of technological limitations and not intentional - frankly, I don't care.  Intentional or not, the lack of clarity in the plot perfectly mirrored the game's tone of 'something in the darkness, hard to tell what'.  The second lacked that, and lacked it big time.

Bloodlines, disappointed me because no other mission past the hotel really spooked me out!  I had a feel of when I felt playing SS2 for the first time during that mission..  Sadly, nothing else really did it for me.  It was a fun playthough, even though it was incredibly easy.

Scariest game from my youth was ghostbusters on master system, (under ten years old i mean) That music..................

SH1 was great but I felt SH2 was more adult, frightneing, and depressing in that order. I loved the symbolism too. The one dimensional characters I saw as characters trapped by their own particular problems. I got one of the bad endings too which also helped as it seemed more appropriate ;).
Title: Re: Any Good PC horror games?
Post by: Ransom on November 02, 2006, 03:27:19 am

Wait. So you applaud the first game's ambiguity, but disparage the second one for it? They did essentially the same thing in the first game, anyway; all the 'weird ****' that happens in the town during SH1 is directly related to a particular character's psychological (and physical) suffering. You're right to some extent about SH2's heavy-handed symbolism, although I disagree about the exposition--there's a lot of problems with the game's dialogue, but unnecessary exposition isn't really one of them.

There's something to be said for SH1's subtle obscurity, but I didn't find the game especially scary, not at least when compared with the second or third parts. Still: one of the strong points of the series, I think, is that each Silent Hill is different from the others. They tell entirely different kinds of stories with different horror styles, and that's probably why the fan base is so divided on which one is the best.

What I'd really like to see, though, is an entry that focuses on the town itself. SH1 is the closest any of them have come to it, but even that was more of an introduction to the cult and the game's mythology than anything else.

Thief 3 was de facto the scariest thing I've played on the PC. The game is pretty tame for the most part, but I chickened out of playing the asylum level for more than half a year because the undead 'patients' that never stayed dead really scared the crap out of me.

If we're going down this route then the rolling light gun shooted House of the Dead will play on the PC using A Sega System 32 emulator. It's not scary. Not in the slightest. It's cool though. Especially the attract mode cutscene with the 1930s guy in the trench coat with the pistol facing off against the huge alien machine. Very Lovecraftian.

House of the Dead 1, 2 and 3 were ported to Windows, why would someone need an emulator, unless they want to play it really slower.

And the Arcade version runs of Sega Model 2C, not Sega System 32.
