Title: No Supernova?
Post by: Grey Wolf on May 27, 2001, 07:58:00 pm
I was playing through the main campaign again, and had reache the final mission. I was playing on Hard instead of Medium, and due to my total ineptness, all the GTVA ships other than me were destroyed and one Cain-class cruiser wasn't destroyed, only disabled and disarmed. Meanwhile, hordes of Shivan fighters and bombers swarmed my Herc II and by 25 minutes had gotten the hull down to 5%. So I hit Alt-J and the game let me jump out. No end movie, just a debriefing screen saying "No debriefing for mission 'Apocalypse'" Has anyone else had this happen?

The Cain is supposed to die.  Apparently its part of the triggering system (probably indirectly) for the supernova to go off.

And all because one puny little cruiser didn't die like it was supposed to. However...you'v eall forgotten one thing.

By saving Capella - the jump node that you run to in the last minutes of that mission is not destroyed. The Shivan Sathanas fleet makes it's way there and jumps through. In approximatly one week all humanit and the Vasudan empire is no more than rubble. You loose. Insert new credit

Wasn't there a ship scheduled to take down this node? The Nereid, or something?
Title: No Supernova?
Post by: Grey Wolf on May 28, 2001, 09:33:00 am
Yeah, so the most I could have done is prevent the Sathanases' jump, saving some other species while also saving the GTVA.

And the Shivan's are sitting in their Juggernauts wondering why their supernova weapon won't work...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

As you exit subspace into a quiet region of Capella, you open the Comm to command...

"Alpha One here, mission failed. Repeat, mission failed. There's just too many Shivans! Where should I go?"

"Alpha One, proceed to coordinates...cancel that! We've detected a large shockwave emanating from the Capella sun!"

You look to your right and are chilled to see the formerly warm yellow sun growing menacingly and deepening into crimson...You look frantically around for a jump node to escape to, but the only one left you had just run away from.

You howl as your world explodes into a fountain of fierce white light.

The end.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

The ending is great, but a little surprising. But the last mission wasn't all that hard really.

Post by: Sushi on May 31, 2001, 02:36:00 pm
I knew the game would end in a supernova, but at the time I didn't think that mission was the last one...

Imagine my surprise. Fortunately, I was playing with the Velocity Mod and was able to get to the jump node in time. Barely.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

You're right though, it wasn't that hard- just a matter of staying away from dangerous Shivan caps and those friggin Dragons. Which, in case you're interested, are best dealt with by staying really near the Deimos and using it as both a source of AAA fire and as a missile blocker.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

If you haven't played the last few missions with the Velocity Mod, you haven't lived. Bomb intercept has never been so much fun!

ok

as you pass through the subspace incurtion you see in the distance a spec, a few seconds later you see it to be a full sized GTVA destroier, it hurtels past you with such a velocity that it's wake takes down your subsystems, you think to your self "wow, today has been a day" just then your ship shakes, a bright white light fills the subspace coridore you look back in horror to realize that the ship that passed you was sent to colapse the node, your last sensation is that of every molicule in your body disintigrateing into energy.

GTD Orion top speed = 15 m/s
GTF Hercules Mk. II top speed w/ AB = 65 m/s
Chances of that knocking out my subsystems by anything other than a collision = 0%
Chance of me surviving a collision = 0%
Chances of me being stupid enough to fly in front of an Orion = 5%
Approx. time for Orion node travel = 10 min.
Approx. time for Hercules Mk. II node travel = 2.3 min.
Think about that.

I know it's called subspace. I was using node travel to distinguish intersystem travel from intrasystem travel.

Does colapsing the node colapses the tunnel too?

I hope you're not talking about my campaign. (the first six missions of The Babel Effect have been dubbed Twilight due to the squadron in it, and are still due for a re-release soon)

There aren't any continuity issues in the campaign, so hopefully you're talking about something else  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Nah, I think this proves my theory that the Sathani are Shivan trailer homes. See, they really just wanted to make friends with the Terrans this whole time, but due to an unfortunate culture gap and some preliminary spy reports collected durign the Terran-Vasudan war, the Shivans figured our primary method of communication involved focusing high-density plasma charges into each other. Thus, Lucifer scout fleet showed up and transmitted the message "We come in peace", wiping out all nearby. Hurt and confused at the Terrans' and Vasudans' panicked flight, they followed the GTA fleet to Vasuda Prime. Knowing an important populated planet when they saw one, what subsequently ensued was the equivalent of thousands of years of Shivan history, science, and literature broken up into several easy-to-understand blasts... Thirty years later, the Shivans spot Terrans in their nebula. Curious as to what happened to their peace delegation, they accost the first fleet they see and bombard them with questions. The Terrans return fire, and, overjoyed that contact has finally been made, the Shivans mobilize their colony ships, ordering them to set up a permanent base around the nearest Terran star where Shivans and Terrans (and Vasudans, who the Shivans assumed were just more Terrans) could trade, communicate, and live in harmony. Up to the death of the Colossus, the Shivans maintained their good intentions, though they had to admit that maintaining good relations with the Terrans seemed to be getting an awful lot of them killed. It was only when the Terrans sealed off the first Capella jump node that the Shivans guessed that something was amiss. Slowly the idea formed that maybe we WEREN'T friendly, after all. Hurt by this possible breach of trust, the Shivans sent out one last delegate, headed on what they last knew as a route to the Sol system and the capitol of Terran government, housed in a Cain class executive transport. When diplomatic talks opened up prematurely and destroyed the Cain and the diplomat before a meeting, let alone consensus, could be achieved. Shocked and disgusted by the treachery of the Terrans, the Sathanas fleet blew up the Capella star in the universal signal for "farewell", which they hoped would eventually reach the remaining Terrans in other systems, and returned home, never to be seen by Terrans again.

Now really, once i saw a show on tv kinda like this! Some aliens came in peace, but while trying to communicate with us, they hit some satellites with a superheated laser that transmitted to earth their transmission, but humans couldn't understand it! Moscow and Washington, thinking they were hostile, fired lots of nukes! They destroyed some of the alien ships, and they aliens fired their energy weapons. Right before they were destroyed, the aliens fired a weaker laser, which reported a transmission in english, saying that they were peaceful. Too late, though, the alien energy weapons had already been fired, destroying Washington and Moscow...

That was hilarious...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) I can't really find any problems with it either; that theory is just as plausible as the rest of them. Just goes to show how little we know about the Shivans. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

But didn't the Ancient records show that they were also destroyed by the Shivans? Or maybe their destruction was for the same reason...hmm...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Just figured I wasn't going to let anyone forget this  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Meanwhile, Lt. Cmdr. Grey Wolf has his hands full....
GW: Petrarch, calm down!
Petrarch: (Holding fingers like guns) Boom! Boom! Boom!
Alpha 2: I'm out of missiles! Send in the support ship!
Alpha 3: My ship is coming apart at the seams! Send in support!
Command: Support will be there in a moment, pilot.
Alpha 2: Damn it! Command let Bosch escape! Aaaah! (Runs into wall again)
GW: Is this what I get for not putting a lock on the Bosch Beer and the Spacecrack?

Not precisely. If you look at the final Command briefing by Admiral Petrarch showing a simulation of the jump nodes being collapsed by the Bastion, you'll see the subspace "tunnel" between the nodes doing a funny jiggle then disappearing into nothingness.

But the end result is the same.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I would rather think that there is no distinction between the tunnel and the nodes.
A subspace tunnel is something that connects two nodes, just like a rope connectes the two ends of the rope  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Er... the nodes are just points in space where subspace connections to the regular universe at two points are strongest. There is no actual "node", just subspace and real space.
Title: No Supernova?
Post by: LtNarol on January 31, 2002, 10:07:00 pm
correct, a subspace node is just an area where a subspace tunnel, much like a wormhole, opens.  Ships can actually travel between stars in subspace without use of these so called jumpnodes, it would only take much longer, the jumpnodes are simply shortcuts in the ripples in the fabric of subspace.

Well, not quite. It's a quite arbitrary thing, makes almost no sense if you try to base it on real-life physics... basically, the only adequate description of subspace is contained in the FS Reference Bible, and even that isn't all that useful...

That's what I said. The nodes are nothing. They are just the ends of the subspace connection between two systems.

So what happens if you have a ship in subspace and you detonate a ship in both nodes at the same time?

It would disappear into non-existance. (He, he. That is actually from some Star Wars book. They say that would happen if you drop something out of your ship in hyperspace)

well, it still worked, the shivans came bouncing down the tunnel and said 'HI' via shoulder mounted cannon....

either that, or thats how shivans normally communicate with eachother...thats why they don't have mouths...

You CAN survive a supernova if you cause another supernova to be triggered whilst the first supernova is uh, supernovaing... the second will kill you, but not if its 2-3 hours away...:D

The Tv program you are looking for was the great (if a little depressing as humans almost alswys get it in SOME way)

"The outer Limits"

"Please do not attempt to adjust your set... we now control it. We control the horizontal, and the vertical... we can show you a thousand images all at once... or expand one image to crystal clarity, and beyond. You are about to embark on a fantastic adventure into The Outer Limits."

you know those troop transports? Well i tried to save them by makign them invulnerable then trying to destroy the nahemas with `k but several if not 1 has a Guard thingy.. only goes down to 1% so its impossible to save them. So by that time, i just let the nahemas eat their fill 6k from the portal. This all happens around 11 minutes into the mission. When the lamba transports come in, i go for the portal
