After Violition went to another publisher, Interplay sold the rights of the Freespace Universe to Derek Smart (thats from the pcgameplay with an article about the rise and fall of space simming, they also say that they fear that Freespace will go downhill with Derek Smart on the helm). But what did he do? I have heard nothing of eff ess fhree, or FS2 Unknown Threat/ Silent Death for that matter.

Interplay didn't sell the rights, Derek Smart couldn't afford them in any case.

Derek Smart claimed he was going to buy the rights, and make the third installment in the FreeSpace series. Some of the forumites were horrified by this as most of his games are infamously crap (Battlecruiser 3000AD (http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/battlecruiser3000ad/index.html?q=Battlecruiser%203000Ad)). Eventually Derek Smart came down here himself (his account is DSmart [3000AD]) and started swearing at everyone. On another board he threatened to close down all the currently active mods for FreeSpace. His vision of FS --- 3 was a completely new engine that would be completely different from the first two FreeSpace games, further adding to the dismay of the community. He went around being over ambitious, just like how his other games had been, over ambitious, released prematurely, and crap. Luckily he disappeared some time ago.

I don't like Derek Smart, I'll freely admit that, but I'm certainly not going to take it out on people who like his games. I've never played one of his games so it would be arrogant of me to assume things.
Basically, he wanted the license, he couldn't afford it and Interplay would never have sold it to him anyway because Volition had a first refusal clause on their contract. It's a common story, and wouldn't be very interesting if we hadn't been the ones he was throwing insults at.

The thread from the original 2004 incident is in the HLP Classics section. Something briefly came up again last year, although I don't think he came over here again.

His fight or flight instinct kicked in. You may think it was brave of Derek to face his fears and choose the fight option, but once he realised the vending machine was no push over (it was too heavy) he ran away like a girl.

IIRC, he was at the Take2 offices and after a disagreement about the launch of his game, he assaulted a coke machine in the lobby.

If someone came on here and did that, it would be because they were a troll, not because they were a Derek Smart fan.

DS is one of those things you must ignore or else you get head hurts. Sometimes i wonder what that guy is actualy thinking. There is no respectefull and good gaming company that would do something like that or say something like that. He just lives in a world of his own. And the best thing to do is to ignore him and his fantasies.(sp?)
At least that is the advice I recieved and it served me well.

You have issues. I don't remember ANY post ANYWHERE where I even came ANYWHERE close to saying or infering that which you speak of. So please stop putting words in my mouth. (If you knew ANYTHING about the business of game development or the responsibilities of game developers and publishers, you would immediately recognize the ludicrousness of your post)

Most games thrive on their communities and I NEVER said ANYTHING about shutting out fans. (Gents, some of the posts in this thread, are EXACTLY the reason why game developers AND publishers hardly pay attention to a game's fanbase.)

Well I believe you said it! For someone with such a demanding name so to speak he most definetly is not that smart. When Sratcraft was made it was a hit and it still is one of the reference games in the industry. but when the add on came along it inclueded some of the objections and sugestions of the fans in order to make the add on more succesfull and more balanced. Sine well the zerg were too fast spreading and the protos were too powerfull once they got moving. so there were a few things added in order to make the game more balanced. And it succeded. Basicly wihtout input from the fans any game will die and without fan support the game will burn in the grabage dumps.

Well i looked through that old thread.
before now I had no idea of who Derek Smart was or of his Battle Cruiser games that HE insist were so popular.
Let me just say that was appalling, any intelligent business man would never insult potential customers like that no matter how seemingly remote. And that site that someone showed a link to that showed this fan bashing wasn't the first instance was just horrifying.
Granted I always take what I read with a grain of salt but this was just ridiculous.
