Why? It's open source right?

But oh well, grab it while it's hot & maybe some one can up it somewhere else.

I've "borrowed" all the bandwidth at work that I'm going to.

It's open source but the content of Freespace (i.e, the ships, weapons, effects, etc), is all still copywrited. But good job, I'd say this is worthy of hosting elsewhere.  :)

or what's left of them, LOL

I mean really, what have you guys not overwritten and/or modded the crap out of it? ;)

That's like the stuff we do for the Fighter Squadron SDOE flight sim game over openplanesim.com, we've modded that game soooo much that hardly any of the original product is left :D

They, the publishers, should be kissing our backsides for keeping their products alive well beyond the usual shelf life of a PC game but hey I guess thats just the way the cookie crumbles. ::)

So like I said, grab it while it lasts!

Well even though the models are redone, they're all based on someone else's IP, and even the names "Shivan" and "Vasudan" are also their IP and thus protected by copywrite.

@Depth Charge - This installs the whole game, you shouldn't need anything else.

OK, now as far as the copywrite, I'm confused now, because, if the IP is under copywrite then what about the links all over these forums for downloading the FS2 CDs which would seem to in violation of the said copywrite.

Sorry, not trying to cause trouble but this quite confusing to me. Either you have right to distribute or you don't but this all seems to be a grey area.

BTW - Has anyone completed the downloads and tried out the disk yet?

The EULA says you can give copies to your friends, and we're all friends here on this forum (Well most of us that is  :D) and most of the images are hosted on private servers, Filefront being a public server will likely take the image you have posted down due to copyright (Note spelling :P) infringement.

My PC doesn't have a DVD burner (pathetic, isn't it?).

Is there a way that I can use some sort of freeware to mount them as a virtual drive for the install?

I assume that I'll be able to unpack them and then re-package in CD friendly chunks with 7zip or Win RAR.

Looks like nice work, hope I'll be able to use it.

Daemon Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/) does a nice job.  Yes, it's free.  :D  Just unpack the image file, install Daemon Tools, load the image file, and go!

CAUTION:
BTW, you have to disable your system debugger for Daemon Tools to install correctly.  Right-click on "My Computer" hit "Properties", go to the "Advanced" tab, then under the "Startup and Recovery" section on the bottom hit "Settings".  On the bottom of the Startup and Recovery dialog box, set "Write Debugging Information" to "(none)".  Hit "OK", then hit "OK" again, to close both dialog boxes.
If you don't follow this, then you'll be following it in Safe Mode.  (I know from experience.)

To get into Safe Mode, you hit the F8 key repeatedly while starting the computer, until XP starts loading, and catches your message.  Then select "Safe Mode" and hit Enter.

DAEMON Tools 4.08 X86
unless you have 64-bit processor and 64-bit Windows.  Then, you would get
DAEMON Tools 4.08 X64

PS Don't forget to disable your debugging info, see above post!  ;)

hip63 Tongue

Copywrite infringement and pirating are two different things. Hosting all the links is technically "pirating", but we just don't care, and it's unlikely that Interplay will come after anyone, being in the state they are.

Now, copywrite infringement would be to, AFAIK, sell the Freespace data (any of it, minus the EXEs, which are open source), reproduce it without permission, etc etc. So if you were to take an Ursa, plaster it on a billboard, and say you're selling used cars and that's your new logo, that'd be copywrite infringement. Taking the game and distributing it online for free is technically "pirating," although once again, we don't care, Interplay can't really do anything, and the EXE is open source anyway.

DAEMON Tools is very good (I have it installed myself) but for everyday ease of use, I mostly use cloneCD Virtual Drive (freeware) available at www.slysoft.com ;)

The RAR files can be unpacked with WinRAR or 7zip

As of this morning the links are still up!
BTW - I have not "submitted" these to Filefront and I wasn't planning on it from the get go (because you can't edit the files anymore after you submit them) so maybe that will buy a little more time for some folks to grab'em before they get nuked. :headz:

Enjoy them while you can :)

I just hope I don't get banned for life 'cause really think filefront is cool :shaking:

Thanks for the link.  I have been abusing my work PC looking for stuff and found their site but missed the link to the freeware download, DOH.  I think I'll stick with this as Daemon Tools is a little heavy for my needs.

I assume that once I download all of the files I'd need to unpack them into just one virtual drive (to replicate one DVD) and I can delete it once installed.

Yeah. Unpack it into one .iso file, use VCD to mount it, then run it from there. You can unmount + delete once it's installed.

you can google it for a download (the version included on the DVD is a bit older)

Tried that.  It leads me to the old FS2 Screensaver project from many years ago.  It won't work on Windows XP.

Post by: Huggybaby on March 08, 2007, 07:38:49 am
It will be too bad if filefront removes it, I don't know of another place that will accept 1 GB files. What if you uploaded it under some weird, non-FreeSpace name, like "hip63's Space Game" lol.

hip63, in answer to your question, I installed it last night. Overall, things went pretty smooth. I found a couple of typos, OpenAL wanted to install twice, and a couple of the install windows wouldn't go away. I installed from a virtual drive because I'm out of DVDs if that makes a difference.

On the plus side, everything seemed to end up in the proper places (you'd have to ask Turey though, he's the expert). Good job on including the manuals. I really liked the background music for the install, and the custom cursor is really cool.

If you want I can install again and take specific notes and send you a PM.

The FSport missions have just been updated too, but I don't know if the update has been "authorized". Plus, I wish I knew when the new mediavps were coming out (as do we all I'm sure). And Turey will have a new updater soon I guess.

Thanks for your hard work, it's obvious you did a LOT!

Thanks for the feed back.

Hmm, well I tested it on serveral machines (professional computer geek by trade as it advantages :D) with virtual drives & from disk without those issues. Friends installed it too without those issues as well.

Sounds like it may have loaded up twice, two instances running at the same time maybe.

If anyone else sees this, please let me know.

And as of this morning, the links are still going strong (who knows, maybe this one will stay off the FF radar ;))

Would anyone mind putting up a walkthrough to unpack the .rar files into one .iso using 7zip? One at time didn't work, I got a broken file error for parts 2-4 and I haven't been able to figure out how to stitch em together.

You should just open #1, then it should prompt you for the rest... when it asks for #2, point it to #2, etc.

Here's my version:

Make sure your downloads were good, since files that big can mess up easily.

Files 1-3 should all be 1,047,600 KB. File 4 should be 247,401 KB.

With WinRAR or 7zip, you can test each file---of course none should come up with a "corrupt archive" message.

If those conditions are met, make sure all 4 files are in the same folder, then unpack file 1. The rest will be found and extracted automatically, resulting in an iso file that's 3,439,634 KB.

Guess venamar got it working, who would know?

Here's my upload contribution---It may come in handy if Filefront isn't working, or for folks who have a problem with 1 GB files. I took the full iso (including Wing Commander and Babylon 5) and 7zipped it into (35 ea.) 95 MB chunks. There are a lot of files because it's a big image, what can I say. On the plus side, you can use a download manager for these. The iso is pretty well compressed already, I think 7zipping saved around 200 MB which isn't much. So without further ado:

That's a good question. Ideally a hoster would accept really large files, accept ftp, keep them online for a long time, and not bandwidth restrict users.

The granddaddy is Rapidshare.com, I don't like their limitations.

A torrent is probably the way to go, but the people on this forum don't like them much, and I'm reluctant to start one until the new mediavps are out.

I checked the gigeshare's terms of use & mediafire's FAQ and gigeshare only promises 90 days after the last download while mediafiles has no time limit ATM and then if needed only the oldest and least download files in deleted.

Useful stuff to know ;7

While smaller parts are litle more cumbersome for high speed users, slow connection like dail-up and (like me) satellite, the smaller files are just the ticket ;)

Thanks Huggybaby,  for a great mirror for if/when my links turn to vapor :pimp:

So if we were to use this ISO, and thanks for doing the assembly on this very much, it will run the game with the movies and everything?  I have the original 3 CD FS2 installed, do I need to uninstall it to install this one?  I wouild like to have both, so i can compare and see the hard work everyone has done but wanted to check first. thanks, my main game research compy has 400 GB harddirve so we should have plenty of room thanks again.

well if you set up the scp right (mediavps are in a separate folder) and you don't use any commands  you will get exactly the same results as the original game.

you can google it for a download (the version included on the DVD is a bit older)

hip63 :P

I don't understand why you wouldn't use the online installer, from what I know, its contents are all fully updated. Plus, it downloads the complete package, including retail. If you cannot access the internet on the computer your trying to put it on, you can just download it zip it and copy it to dvd ( YOU CANNOT JUST PUT THE FILES RAW ON THE DVD, IT WILL SCREW UP THE GAME! ). Although if you just want to download the files directly, the mirrors heres the links below. Note: You don't need to zip these because they have been prezipped for you :D

The only files you need to download from my mirror are below. (this is the complete set of retail files)
act1anis.zip (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/act1anis.zip)
act2anis.zip (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/act2anis.zip)
act3anis.zip (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/act3anis.zip)
core.zip (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/core.zip)
Root_fs2.zip (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/Root_fs2.zip)(replace the fs2_root.vp in the core.zip with this one)
higraph.zip (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/higraph.zip)
music.zip (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/music.zip)
voice.zip (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/voice.zip)
multi-mission-pack.vp (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/multi-mission-pack.vp)(optional)
multi-voice-pack.vp (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/multi-voice-pack.vp)(optional)
FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp)(FS2_Open only).

I will get the links for the FS2_Open files from Turey when he logs back on his messenger. I have copied this post onto Tureys post for his installer.

that post was only about the included beam screensaver, nothing more, it doesn't refer to the game content ;)

the game content included is currently up to date and the installer makes easy as pie for anyone to get the game up and running without the player needing to versed in FSSCP install lore :)

When I used the online installer for the first time, I told it to download everything and it downloaded some things that were redundant (i.e. - it downloaded the .ogg & .mve files when you only need one type, and those are like the biggest files in the thing, so my installer just installs the ogg versions of the cutscences, also the online installer seams to be waaay slow and I *think* it downloads items in an uncompressed state (I may be wrong) My installer makes it nice, simple and easier on the bandwidth)

Not to mention it looks heck-a-cool! 8)

For most of the files, that's what it does.

Ok, I see merit in both an online installer and a dvd.  For people wanting to have something to distribute that they know works, who aren't themselves too well versed in DVD mastering, it's nice to have something to hand out to friends.  However the online installer will always be the way to get the most up to date versions installed, as long as people keep their versioning files up to date.  Now, it would be nicer if the DVD did not ignore the fact that there is a very nice online updater already available and were to include a version of it as well.  Then the DVD could do its install, and then offer the option to check for updates online.  Without that, it becomes difficult to update from the static dvd versions without subsequent patching, and becomes harder on the end user to get updates because they've not even been to hard light yet, and would have no idea where to look for updated files.  That said, it's still very good to have some sort of iso version to distribute.

Thanks Turey. I've been saving those files for just such a report. I'll check and re-upload part 32 and hopefully it will work. If not, I/we're in bad shape.  :shaking:

BTW, I just ran your installer/updater on hip63's iso. Everything seems to work except fsport. The updater wants to download fsport again, into an fsport directory, because hip63 used the ShivanSPS convention of Fs1_port_3. I don't know how that can be ironed out. Could you make your updater check for and accept Fs1_port_3?

<edit> Hmm, MediaFire says it can't access the file right now, try later (but it's been downloaded 3 times already). Is that the problem you're having? Or did you download the file and it's corrupt?

It's simply a slightly-better compressed .zip.

I'll switch back to regular Deflate. The number of problems people are having with this is insane.

Indeed. I'm not sure what the deal is, but a lot of people are having the same problem. I have winrar and 7zip installed, so I think that's why I haven't seen that error. I think anyone using default Windows zip support will have it.
Title: Re: FreeSpace SCP DVD ISO Now Available for Download (New Mirror Posted!)
Post by: chief1983 on March 20, 2007, 02:24:55 pm
Bleh.  Windows zip support is awful.  Give people a built in way to handle one exact type of file compression and then they wonder why they can't open every compressed file out there.  I go so far as to registry-disable that stupid zip support before I even install 7zip or anything else.

Hi,
I've got a little problem. I spent 3 days downloading the 32 files. And yeah I noticed, that i can't extract the files with winrar or something like this. So I downloaded this 7zipped. But I can't extract the files with that either because there is always an error that it can't do it. I'd be very glad if somebody could tell me what to do.

Err, you have all the files in the same directory, right?  Try right-clicking on the first one, go to 7-zip > Test, see if it tells you which of the files is "broken".
Title: Re: FreeSpace SCP DVD ISO Now Available for Download (New Mirror Posted!)
Post by: Huggybaby on March 26, 2007, 01:18:36 pm
No, unfortunately it won't.

I went to the 7-zip forums and this problem comes up all the time. Here's a solution that I found there though:

1. Go here: http://www.md5summer.org/download.html and get the md5summer utility.
2. Download this file: http://rapidshare.com/files/22907076/hip63fsiso.md5.html . It's the good md5 checksums from the files I uploaded.
3. Run md5summer, using hip63fsiso.md5 to check against your downloaded 7zip files. It should tell you which don't match. If the problem isn't too bad, I'll re-upload the corrupted files.

Sorry for the trouble. This procedure sounds harder than it is (I hope).

Title: Re: FreeSpace SCP DVD ISO Now Available for Download (New Mirror Posted!)

I'm familiar with it but have never used it. If I understand it correctly, it comes in handy when you're missing a piece, but in this case we have all the pieces and one or more of them is bad. So it seems it would be as easy to re-upload the bad piece as it would to ask someone to learn yet another piece of software.

If there are other benefits to it please advise! However, I think in this case the error correction provided by winrar would work just as well.

Too bad it took me over 24 hours to upload the thing, and three days for datnervt to download it.

Anyway I'm kind of pissed off at mediafire, and http uploading in general. I wish datnervt had used your torrent. A simple force recheck of a torrent guarantees a perfect hash.

<edit> It appears that quickpar can find corrupt files too...sounds good to me, but I really hate asking someone who is unfamiliar even with multipart archives to learn yet another program. Or maybe it's just ME who doesn't want to learn another program. LOL

Post by: datnervt on March 26, 2007, 02:18:58 pm
Ok,
I'll do it tomorrow with your instructions. But I've got a question. Every file is supposed to be 95mb right? Because some of my files are much smaller, so that should be the broken ones, or not?
Title: Re: FreeSpace SCP DVD ISO Now Available for Download (New Mirror Posted!)
Post by: Huggybaby on March 26, 2007, 02:26:56 pm
Yes, every file is exactly 97,280 KB, except for the last one (part 35), which is 97,091 KB. So any that don't match those specs should be downloaded again.
Title: Re: FreeSpace SCP DVD ISO Now Available for Download (New Mirror Posted!)
Post by: jr2 on March 26, 2007, 04:56:47 pm
[devil's advocate] Is that the file's size, or its size on disk?  They aren't necessarily the same, you know.  :drevil: [/devil's advocate]

Yah, one of QuickPar's purposes is to repair corrupt file efficiently.  I'd explain more, but I (unfortunately) haven't used it yet; I would have, but I had already deleted the source (good) file, so it wouldn't have helped in my situation.
Title: Re: FreeSpace SCP DVD ISO Now Available for Download (New Mirror Posted!)
Post by: Huggybaby on March 26, 2007, 05:04:50 pm
Good point.

That's the size in Windows Explorer folder view.

In file properties, it's:

Size: 95.0 MB (99,614,720 bytes)
Size on disk: 95.0 MB (99,614,720 bytes)

So strangely enough in this case they're the same.

For the last file, it's:

Size and size on disk: 94.8 MB (99,420,339 bytes)

And I would run quickpar, but it would take 2 1/2 hours on this machine, so I won't.  ;7

Ok,
I downloaded all the "broken" files again over the night. And now they're all 95mb. There's only one file missing. Guess which.....right 32. And I REALLY hate rapidshare because you have to wait about 110 minutes before downloading again. So now I have to wait, but then I'll download the last file and tell if it worked.

Hmph.  These aren't hosted at FileFront?  What are they, just the .iso file RAR'ed to 32 pieces?  I can do that & upload to FileFront sometime... if you guys want.
Title: Re: FreeSpace SCP DVD ISO Now Available for Download (New Mirror Posted!)
Post by: Huggybaby on March 27, 2007, 04:01:09 pm
@datnervt: Mediafire accepted my 32nd part (again) the other day, and here it is, no waiting: http://www.mediafire.com/?a3mlhzl3zmj
I don't know why you had to wait 110 minutes, I only have the one file on Rapidshare.
Be sure to run md5summer if it doesn't extract and tell me which piece is bad. I also have Quickpar pieces standing by if need be.

@shiven_warior: It's already being torrented by jr2.

@jr2: I don't understand your hmph. It makes me think you think I did something wrong. It doesn't make sense to host them on filefront because that's where hip63 already has his 4-parter, and if they delete his then they would delete yours and that's not a very robust backup.

Mediafire has no bandwidth limitations or download restrictions.

Also, it's 35 pieces. The reason for that number is because more than one person wanted parts smaller than 100MB, and 100MB is the size limit on many hosting services.

@Huggybaby: nonsense.  You did nothing wrong, I'm was just wondering why it wasn't in both places...
In other words, I was grumbling.  :D  But not at you.  About nothing in particular and everything in general.  The reason I was asking, is cause I can upload it to FileFront if Mediafire is unreliable... or is the problem at the other end of the pipe?
Title: Re: FreeSpace SCP DVD ISO Now Available for Download (New Mirror Posted!)
Post by: Huggybaby on March 28, 2007, 08:48:25 am
Thanks for not grumbling at me.  ;) The internet is a strange place, you never know.

I don't know that there's a problem with MediaFire, I've never really had trouble before. I have files there that have been downloaded hundreds of times. It's just that here there are two people who have had problems, and unless they report with more info I'll have to assume the problem is on their end.

Getting a corrupt download from anywhere is not too uncommon, especially if one has a slow connection and/or does other things on the net while downloading. So, if you were to upload a 35 parter to filefront, and the trouble is on the downloader's end, then unfortunately it wouldn't make any difference.

With md5summer I've provided the tool to know for sure. And, I have quickpar files generated and ready to go.

Utter noob seeks help.

So I got the 4 files off filefront.

I extracted the first file *out of the iso* to a folder as per instructions. (that is, open rar, open iso, extract from there)

I assumed I also needed to extract the other 3 .iso's from the rars to the same folder.  But when I go to do this, WinRAR tells me "you need to start extraction from a previous volume to unpack FreespaceSCP.iso". FreespaceSCP.Part2-4 all give me this message if I attempt to unpack them.  Have the files become corrupted or am I going about this the wrong way?  Go heavy on the details, I'm obviously not well versed in installing things from iso's.

If not.. do I just leave the part 2-4 rars in the same folder as the FreespaceSCP.exe and begin installation?

Yeah, sounds like you got a bit confused.  It's actually one ISO file, split into 4 compressed .rar files.  Most programs that can unrar a file, will know how to use the last 3 if you start at the first file.  So, open (or right click if you have the options in your right click menu) the first rar file, tell it to extract its contents to somewhere you can remember, and it should extract all 4 rar files at one time, and you should have one iso file when it's done.  Then, you can either burn the iso to a DVD using a program that can burn isos, or just use Daemon Tools or some other virtual cd-rom drive program to mount it as a virtual disc drive, and install from that.  If you need any help with the last part just post again.

That did the trick.  All installed and ready to go, mucho thanks.  Is Derelict included in all this or do I have to go dig that up somewhere else?

Uhm, any idea how to get Lightspeed's nebula files working with this? Because so far I couldn't find a "map" directory in this DVD install and even if I make one and put the files there, the shiny background files isnt appearing  :sigh:

You shouldn't need a map directory, you probably want to get the .vp versions of the backgrounds and the campaign missions, and just put those in your mediavps folder.  I don't know the link off the top of my head.

Well I've already sorted it out. I just made a vp file of the background files I have and put it into the mediavp folder. Thanks anyway  :)

Hmmmmm. Pity I didn't spot this thread back when datnervt was having trouble. I actually generated a bunch of .par2 files for the DVD when I downloaded it cause I knew that sooner or later I'd need them.

Of course that was about 3 days before BtRL was released and I was rather busy. :)

The torrent option is awesome. My wireless internet would have a hard time getting all of the files downloaded, even with free download manager. Thanks so much!
