Title: setting up for MP
Post by: bloke on March 08, 2007, 02:29:50 am
I just installed FS2 and Im trying to figure out what i need to play online. I've registered with FS2NET, but i don't know what and where to get the necessary files. Also my pc is quite old: i run win98 on a p2 400 with 128mb ram, so i can't run mods and stuff designed for modern machines, but i can run freespace. Thanks.

Alternatively, you can get the FreeSpace Open Installer from my sig, install FSO, then follow steps 5-8 on the above link.

I look forward to playing you. :)

Hmmmm. Depending on your graphics card you might have a little too old a PC to run FS2_Open well. That gives you a little less choice about how to play.

1) IP games (find someone who likes FS2 Retail, swap IP addresses and then you can play)
2) Via VPN with Hamachi (http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2262)
3) Using Tom's Old Build can work with old machines but the exe is in dire need of an update at the moment.

...build yourself a new computer.  :D
Seriously, though, is it a slot-1 processor?  If so, what is the southbridge on it?  (CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) can tell you that info.)  Also, what is the motherboard make and model number?

nothing is made clear either.

Try the link in my siggy.  ;)

EDIT: BTW, your system is a Dell OptiPlex GX1 (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ban_gx1/), you can upgrade it to a PIII Celeron 1.4 GHz, 768 MB RAM, and an nVidia FX PCI graphics card. (You have AGP, but unfortunately it is only integrated, with no expansion slot.)
I know, because I've done it before.  :D
The only thing you might have problems with is getting the PowerLeap pl-ip3t adapter to fit in the case.  (Which might be a problem, depending on how much room is in your computer.)
Of course, you'd have to check around for prices...  Last I knew, the CPU upgrade was about $100 on eBay, which included the adapter and the 1.4 GHz PIII-Celeron Tualatin CPU.  The graphics cards run from $40-100 in various places, and the RAM... about $160-170 from crucial.com   For that price, you might just want to go get a better computer... or build your own, of course.  That's the way I do it.  Let me know if you need help, it's not as hard as it sounds.

...That's cause there probably isn't.  Try creating an online game, post the IP here, I can take a look and see if I can join.  :doubt:
EDIT: The OpenAL download (http://www.openal.org/downloads.html) site appears to be down; it'll prolly be back up in a few minutes.

Can't find it.  Of course, you post 20 mins after I did, and I only saw that 30 mins after you posted.  I did send you a PM.. did you check it?
EDIT: By selecting "Create game" I was able to create a game, which ran fine... of course, nobody was around, so...

You shouldn't need to use an IP addy if you're using fs2netd.

Instead of telling us here, why not try visiting the HLP IRC channel and looking for a game there?

Are you sure i have an nVidia graphics card? It's supposed to be an SiS 300/305 thing. There is no nvidia hardware on this system at all.

You don't have an nVidia graphics card.  You should. ;) (Note I said you can upgrade to a PIII 1.4, 768 MB, nVidia FX PCI...

It's pretty easy... lots of info online.  (plus, I can help...)  If that's what you really wanna do.  Of course, it'd probably be more cost-effective to just build your own compy from the case up.  Like I said, not that hard.  Probably take you half hour to an hour if you have decent instructions / problem solving skills.  Just make sure to put the washers on the motherboard screws!! XD

Ok well If i buy a pc off ebay, even one which isn't top of the range (out of the question anyway), i could swap my grphics card over. A lot of the stuff on ebay doesn't come with graphics cards even as powerful as mine (32mb i believe). Only problem is i don't know how to do that or what i would need for the card to work, what slots, types or whatnot.
How can i find this info out? Thanks.

Hmm, well, the latest slot type for graphics cards are PCI-E.. followed by AGP, then, the oldlest, PCI.  Are you looking to buy a new graphics card for your old computer, or a whole new system?  BTW, most graphics cards nowadays have at least 256, and possible 512 MB of on-board memory.

I've got also the message of hacked tables.

I checked my Folder for .tbm files -->
no mods running in the launcher
build 3.6.9 fully updated (this includes the mediavps as well)

But it won't stop to tell me, my tables are hacked.

Can somebody guess where the problem is? (if i remember right, the 1.2  retail patch is installed over the retail build)

Download the multi missions pack in the sticky, put it in a mod folder (like "multimissions") in your FS2 root folder and select that folder as a mod in the launcher. If your Media VPs are not in the FS2 root folder (and they shouldn't be there anyway) you won't get that error.

Post by: karajorma on June 07, 2007, 09:08:33 am
Or more simply, stick them in root and run with no mods :)

(The multi mission pack is one of the few add-ons I don't mind being in root as they won't screw anything up by being there. Besides they were at least partially validated by :v: so although not canon they are semi-official in a way ) :D
Title: Re: setting up for MP
Post by: Sarkoth on June 07, 2007, 02:05:05 pm
the problem was partially solved. Now i encountered a new one:

when theres actives Servers on http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/main.php?mod_select=none (http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/main.php?mod_select=none) i don't see them in my serverlist. But when I set a Server myself, it ist in Game Wardens Serverlist as online.

Though, i have no clue which of these two fs2open_pxo.cfg's i should use:

fs2netd.game-warden.com
12001

OR

64.92.160.250
12000

They seem identically, but when i use the first one, i get a message for hacked tables, with the second i don't.

This far, i'm a litte bit of clueless.

For FSO:
fs2netd.game-warden.com
12000

For BtRL:
fs2netd.game-warden.com
12001

What firewall are you using?

Thats the point. No Firewall, no Router and Port 7808 ist open for UDP and TCP

No its a "FritzBox" Neither Firewall, nor Router, Just a frakkin DSL Box
Title: Re: setting up for MP
Post by: jr2 on June 11, 2007, 10:02:57 am
It must have a built in router / firewall.
Title: Re: setting up for MP
Post by: karajorma on June 11, 2007, 01:13:58 pm
Actually it is a router as far as I can tell. Just one with a few fancy VOIP options too.

So now the question that has to be asked is where is it forwarding the port to? It has to be forwarding to the IP address of your PC.

My advice, Start here (http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm) and look up your Fritzbox. There's probably no entry for FS2 but look at a few games and remember that you have to forward port 7808.

Both

I've never seen any sign of any TCP packets on port 7808. If there are any they must be really uncommon.
Title: Re: setting up for MP
Post by: Sarkoth on June 12, 2007, 12:18:42 pm
Uploaded now my port settings.

In my opinion this should open port 7808 in all cases.

If i did something wrong, correct me please. I'm not this sure if the IP is correct, but it was the same for other options too.
