Title: looking for a good online shooter
Post by: redsniper on May 29, 2007, 01:21:27 am
I've got an itch to run around and shoot people, human players, not AI. My problem is that AFAIK shooters boil down to either run 'n gun reflex based affairs (quake, unreal) or overly realistic tactical shooters (counterstrike, rainbow 6, GRAW, battlefield, everything). I'm simply not good enough to compete with the junkies that play counterstrike all day long, and I hate tactical shooters. Is there anything out there that strikes a good balance between these?

I want something where I can use my wits to help me rather than skill alone, but still be able to take a few hits and keep on fighting. RPG qualities, like stats, equipment, inventory, etc. would be great but aren't absolutely necessary.

I've been playing Gunz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GunZ_The_Duel) a little bit and it doesn't quite satisfy. I like how it mixes gunplay with swordfighting and being able to gain experience and buy better equipment, but it's too easy for people to exploit glitches in the game and use cheap tricks and such.

Thoughts, suggestions?

Have you tried Enemy Territory ? I find it heaps of fun without having to play 6 hours a day to be good.

On-line shooter?

I reccomend anything with a BF1942 feel, failing that go for Call of Duty 3.

:doubt: Yeah well, have you actually played it? I have and I didn't like it.

BF42, definetly. I don't care what Halo people say. BF42 and Desert Combat are the best multiplayer shooters out there. Except maybe BF2, I haven't tried it.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein? Look it up, it's free (abandonware, basically) and is somewhat similar to BF42.

I was actually kinda looking for something with a modern feel or even a touch of sci-fi rather than WW2, but I can't argue with free. I've got Enemy Territory downloading right now.

Two more for ya, besides Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory:

Urban Terror 4.0

Tremulous

I find both excellent.   :pimp:

BTW, if you use Bittorrent, then search for these at www.vuze.com, I uploaded them (all three) there - before I was banned for uploading BSG:BtRL :(  (yes, everything else is still up & running, only BtRL was banned, & me with it.)

Halo is the main popular title I can think of, if you want something that's a balance between between the two game styles you mentioned.

I personally love the Unreal/Quake gameplay and get bored to death by the slow CS/BF style. :p

Counter-Strike isn't really a tactical shooter. It's only tactical if you're on a server with less than 13 people on it. Hostile Intent is a tactical shooter. Except it exploded.

Well yeah, Counter-Strike is pretty run 'n gun but it's popular enough that you'll have kids who do nothing but play it all day, so they'll be so good at it that it's no fun to play anymore.

Ummmm, I bought mine from CEX, about £4.

[/legal cover]  Might be available from some non-reputable sources, but HLP and i don't really condone their use. [/legal cover]

E-bay, amazon, maybe even play.com  :)

non-reputable in which circles?   I get your point.  But it it's that cheap, and is still available, then it's worth it to buy... is there still alot of ppl playing it?  (Is there as many as Tremulous & Urban Terror & Wolfenstein: ET?)

Sounds like you want Battlefield 2.  They now have a nifty everything in one package out there (BF2, Special Forces, Armored Fury, Euro Force) for $25 or so.  Its themed like the more serious tactical shooters but isn't quite as serious....but also isn't the massive twitchfest that some of the other shooters are like.  BF2 is also pretty much all multiplay or singleplay with bots so that fits your other requirement.  Not sure what you think about the vehicles but you can pretty much ignore them if you don't like vehicles or play on servers that are infantry only.

Personally I think its a riot planting AT mines watching a big powerful tank blow up and then shooting some infantry with my automatic shotgun playing as the Engineer class.  That or all of the deviousness I've had with the C4 explosives and the Special Forces class (which also gets to toat my favourite G36C rifle as an unlock).

Urban Terror has the G36.  Standard issue (all weapons are standard issue...) :p

I played warrock in closed and open beta...it was fun, but it wasnt very high quality.
The open beta showed a lot of promise. I actually thought it was a great balance between quake style and bf2 style
sort of like counterstrike, but much more military.
