Title: New WIKI category - Non-cannon ships
Post by: TrashMan on June 30, 2007, 06:05:21 am
How about adding a new category - NON CANNON ships/stations/stuff

It would list various ships made by the HLP modelers in the same way cannon ships are listed now.

Methinks the ship name would have to include the maker to prevent confusion with repeating ship classes names.

It might be a bit too much, as it would surely be a big database..if it ever lives...meh, yea, I'm bored.

There is already a "Mod Database" category. I'd have no objection to a list of user-created ships under that. In general, I'm opposed to non-Canon things on the wiki, but as long as it stays under that category and is clearly identifiable as a list of user-made ship mods so as to avoid confusion with Canon ships, I see no problem in this particular case.

Information about available mods does have a place there.

Make sure you include name of the mod, a clear, VERY CLEAR tag that article handles non-canon design and make sure none of the links to the articles ends up into the canon shiplists or to descriptions of canon designs.

For example:

What's Derilict doing in the mod database? Isn't it allready in the Cosom Campaign list?

And if we are gonna include custom ship and station, we best decide on a format - are we gonan pu in ther jsut snippets of info with links or full detailed articles about each ship?

I edit a page for a single simple example (wihtou any links so far or a special page)

Well, there should be a direct link to it from the front...
Hell I couldn't find it and theres nothing in it and it's been ther since 2005, so that should tell you something!

You got a MOD database, you'd figure it would lead you to all mods/models... looks like we have either too few or too many links in the wiki...

Do we even NEED A mod database link? Under modding you got a lsit of campaigns and a lsit of ships/station...

The Mod Database was something I started to take up some free time while sitting around at college. There were a few requests for it, but nothing really specific, which is why I now find it pretty redundant.

I've removed the link from the Wiki main page.

Well, the list s growing but slowly.

It really would be a HIGHLY usefull tool for campiang makers to quickly find modela they could use in their projects.

Mething we need to motivate people to expand hte databse and add info and download links.

Question.

Is it okay to add ships created by other people (so long as the author's original tech entries et cetra are preserved), or should it be left to the authors themselves?

If this sounds like an obvious question, then I apologise in advance - I'm totally new to the concept of wikis. Read, but don't deal with, so to speak.

:)

Add them. If the author has any problems, they can make their edits.

The mod database is being remade.. To be more complete mod (campaign, ship, weapon, music etc.) directory

IMO feel free to add ships by made other people.. Just remember to give the due credit.

With regards to this catagory, it would be nice to have indicators noting which ships are compatible with retail versus those designed for FSO only.
