I was looking around the training mission when i found this...
"If a heat seeker loses track of its target, chances are it will not reacquire lock. Aspect seekers, on the other hand, will track their targets until they detonate."
WTF? thats NEVER happend! (except for bombs) and the Heat seeker relocks on the next hostile target if their target has been destroyed.
-
Whateva, I'll say what I want!

:wtf:
-
The TSM series is not intended as a substitute for actual field training.
-
TSM stands for These Stupid Missions.
-
That makes perfect sense? Aspect seekers will only go after that target you have locked down. They will keep following it till they detonate. Heat seekers just follow the heat from a ship.
-
Aspect seekers will follow decoys if/when they are deployed... they will also run out of fuel & detonate when they do. (As specified by their maximum range in the weapons.tbl.)
-
TSM stands for These Stupid Missions.
How true.
-
thats why theres that little skip training button on the top right :P
-
You don't get your wings... :(
-
You don't get your wings... :(
You can skip all but the last one and get them.
-
I like the fs training missions. V did a good job on them.
-
Training missions are pretty damn hard to make, the problem is they're not fun.

ROFL! Nice one!
-

Not supposed to be. They are supposed to train you how to use your controls, before you find the entire game not fun because your are utterly defenseless against your enemies... you'd have as much chance as a fighter on the runway with enemy fighters in range and locked on.
-

Tell me about it. Have you any idea how many times I had to sit through Gauntlet telling me what to do to make the BtRL training mission? :D
To this day I think "Your instructor is not a valid target pilot!" is one of my most heard FS2 phrases cause every time I accidentally test a mission and click on the campaign room instead of the techroom I hear it. :)
-
more then once i've made my instructor a valid target, wether command likes it or not :)
-
more then once i've made my instructor a valid target, wether command likes it or not :)
Meh, I've tried that too but I got force-warped out.
-
In the second training mission you can order him to warp out, IIRC.
-
am i the only one that thinks TSMs have a strangely familiar cliche to them?
-
They remind me of Chemistry... only more interesting.
"This is Magnesium..."
-
You don't get your wings... :(

:wtf:
So THAT'S why i don't have my wings. Doh! And i already finished the entire FS2 Campaign with NO wings.
-
That's why Alpha 1 couldn't save Capella. He's not frakking qualified to fly! :P
-
Blame the people who let him fly without his wings! *points at Command*
They even gave him an elite squadron!
-
Retards can go real far once applied. And that says enough about all of us playing fs2 being the only people in the universe who can press the retry button after they die on a mission. I mean, we see if we can survive flying through a capship beam, and well, we know very well what happens if you don't get your wings now
-
-sigh- No other way to get my wings, is there?
-
I imagine if you knew what value to change in your pilot file.... ?
-
They should teach you how to avoid capital ship beams in a TSM exercise. Probably 25% of my deaths were from anti fight beams and anti capital ship beams.
-
Impossible. The only way is to see or hear the beam warm up, and know what the target is going to be, and avoid crossing the line between the target and attacker... if it's AAA, then jink (erratic movements + bursts of AB).
-

Non retail version, mine's FSO.

I got hit by a helios once. I was infront of the Ursa's secondary at the wrong time, the wrong place.
Strangely enough, in Inferno, I blocked a capital ship missile and my shields were barely scratched...
-
Anti-fighter beams are difficult to dodge, but not impossible. They target you on your last known trajectory about 1 second before the volley. They fire 3, my easiest way of dodging them is pull up, pull down, pull up. That way you down lose sight of your target.
Or you can stay out of range and blow the crap out of it with maxims and trebuchets.

At least they are consistent in their stupidity...

Just once i wish that stupid 'command' guy would've changed shifts, and instead someone else could give 'commands'....always stating the bloody obvious.
"Incoming jump signature, hostile configuration"
NO SH1T SHERLOCK ! I thought shivans were friendly configuration !! :hopping:

Actually, you can use the threat indicator (the little blinking circle above the one that flashes when you get a missle lock) to tell when a beam is firing at you. When you see it blink as well as hear a beam warming up, you know it's after you.

lulz.
You know that mission where the Big C took down the Repulse?
"Incoming jump signature, friendly configuration!"
I actually mentally replaced the friendly with hostile.

You can break off a beam's attack if you're fond of ship hugging. Turn so that the ship is between you and the beam. Of course, this is usefull only if you know you won't turn into another beam turret.
-
I got hit by a helios once. I was infront of the Ursa's secondary at the wrong time, the wrong place.
Done that before, corse in my case it was intentional. thought i had invulnerability on and decided to try a new way to fly intercept.

didn't know that, thats quite useful.

I do that a lot while intercepting. Did it twice on PI's Deshret mission. :doubt:
-
I've had a few problems with anti-fighter beams shooting at me even when im on the other side of the turret. They're firing beams through their own ship ! :blah:
-
Obvious hax. Lol.
-
I've had a few problems with anti-fighter beams shooting at me even when im on the other side of the turret. They're firing beams through their own ship ! :blah:
that happens. alot. try playing revenge:final conflict on 3.6.9 and you'll get capships firing trough themselves with every form of beam
-
I hate that... 'cause obviously, the tactic of blowing the AAA on one side of the ship and hovering on that side to recharge shields doesn't work...
-
I slash ships that are equipped with a reasonable amount of AA weaponry. Safer. I slash from top down, in a diagonal pattern.
-
I remember in one mission i had a leviathan shooting its main gun at me. :eek2:
I was about 1700 m out , approaching it from the front, trying to take out its main gun, so started unloading hornet missiles and prometheus shots at it, then it powers up and fires right at me! There were no capital ships behind me that it could've been trying to hit, it shot the cannon at ME !
I swear i was just like "HOLY CRAP!"
-
It could be shooting at bombs or something. BFReds have been known to try to hit bombs. :D
-
What are the odds of an A-cap beam hitting a bomb, anyway. A slash might have a better chance, imo.
-
It fires instantly, remember?
-
after they charge for a few seconds. also, you can sometimes fly into the "orb" the beams come from and you won't get vaporized by the beam.
-
Wow I just saw something strange occur... A Hecate fired its main beam at an Orion, but a Slash beam destroyed the turret the Hecate was firing. Instead of being cut off, the beam the Hecate fired at the Orion began damaging the Hecate it had been fired from. Weird, huh?
-
Yes.Did you also know that you can ram bombs? They hurt. :drevil: I learned that the hard way.
-
Something else that i dont get is that you could get hit by a BFGreen and survive. If a BFRed hit you, you'd be vaporized.
Strange that.
-
Something else that i dont get is that you could get hit by a BFGreen and survive. If a BFRed hit you, you'd be vaporized.
If it's a friendly beam it can only do 30 damage, even on Insane.
-

LIE! i've been vaped from friendlies at 100% hull
-
TRUTH:
$Max Beam Friendly Fire Damage: 0, 5, 10, 20, 30
-
which table is that?
-
ai_profiles.tbl, the default one too.
-
i just looked through all the tables on the retail, you sure thats not a mod? i couldn't find that line any where.
-
It's a table added by FS2Open. But it's the default retail settings.
-
weird, i don't appear to have that table. i'll have to find out why i'm missing it
-
You're not missing it.
AI_Profiles.tbl took a bunch of hardcoded values and made them into a table so that they could be edited. The default values have been there since retail days and are still present in the code. The difference is that now if you have the table you can alter them.
-
figured it was something like that. i assume it was included in a pack with one of the older builds?
-
There fore a friendly beam can only nuke you for 30% hull? Theoretically?
-
Incorrect. Beams deal an amount of damage (specified in weapons.tbl) several times a second. Friendly beam fire is capped, so that even though something like a BFGreen is set to deal 1900 damage many times each second, it will instead deal 30 (many times each second). For reference, a Hercules II has 275 hitpoints, not counting shields, since they're irrelevant to beam fire.
-
... Therefore, a BFGreen can kill you if you're caught in its full pulse wave?
-
Thats not a question, thats a fact
-
Yeah, i know that for a fact too.
-
... Therefore, a BFGreen can kill you if you're caught in its full pulse wave?
Yes, but it won't do whatever damage it says in the table, if you're playing on insane, it will give you 30 damage each split second.
-
Meh, I'll edit my ai_profiles...FULL DAMAGE!

Madness.

So...
You're defending the Archangel and then a huge beam comes out and vaporizes you. When you respawn you go in and blast the Archangel out of anger.
-
lol, ~0 until you get a high powered beam cannon and get your revenge
-
Meh, I'll edit my ai_profiles...FULL DAMAGE!
You might not need to do that at present.... My experience with FSO 3.6.9 is that friendly beam fire damage isn't capped as it should be. Last time I was playing, I took a glancing blow from a friendly LTerSlash, and there wasn't enough debris left to tell if it was my fighter or one of the NTF Herc's. I recall seeing the beam sweeping toward me, and I expected it to scrape a few points off of my hull integrity, while knocking me to the side, but it wasn't to be. Of course, to be sure, it'd be pretty easy to cap beam damage at zero in the AI profiles table, then make a mission with a cruiser and a scripted event for it to fire its main beam at Alpha 1.

Sounds like something that would happen in JAD.
Cruiser: -fires main beam at Alpha 1
Alpha 1: WTF? What did you do that for ?!?!?!
Cruiser: You hurt my feelings.
-
I just wanna get hit by a beam.Just for fun over and over and over and i cannot stop it. :p :) ;)
Like this. :beamz:

We should do a 300 campaign in Freespace XD

So...

Unlikely to happen..it only has 4 beam cannons...however, I theoreticly could run into one of it's missiles or plamsa shots...

You know if the shivans can make a star go nova. I bet they can probably officially blow up a planet, and i don't mean glassing the planet, i mean blowing it like deathstar style. Of course something on the order of a lot of saths and lucy's will be required to surround a planet sort of like with the capella star (but not using crappy subspace to blow up a planet). But why not? They're quite literally the destroyers. One ship as lowly as a lucy can glass a planet, and 80 saths can blow up a star. I'd think it's safe to say that the shivans can blow up planets.
-
Maybe they could warp and twist the core of a planet, making it collapse upon itself.
-

They actually didn't glass Vasuda Prime, they just destroyed every major city on the planet IIRC
-
All major Vasudan cities were leveled, and most of the landmass was rendered uninhabitable.
It's open to interpretation.
-
Well it was mainly through the use of beams and some shivan planet bombarding bombs. It only took one shivan ship to render vasuda uninhabitable regardless.
-
We should do a 300 campaign in Freespace XD
LOL, yea, 300 terrans against half a million shivans.
Sounds a little.....repetative. No shivans ever manage to hit me. They fly like drones. Especially basilisks and Aeshma's.
-
Ever notice how the shivans send wave after wave of fighters that keep getting annihilated by only a few wings of fighters (not to mention alpha one)? And they are supposed to be more powerful in every single way :wtf:
-
Ever notice that the Shivans have 80 Saths?
Idiot.
-

#3 :P
My point is that the shivans are really crappy pilots.
-
#3 :P
Actually that's #4. :p
My point is that the shivans are really crappy pilots.
Doesn't matter if they have a zillion willing pilots? Plus, the Shivans can't respawn when they die, and also, they can't turn down the difficulty to
'Very Easy'.
-
[stateoftheobvious]which is why alpha one pwnz all. His weapon is the difficulty setting! [/stateoftheobvious]
-
So your telling us that you have difficulty at mega easy. Try it at hard. :P
-
not really, it happens in every difficulty. It's always you and your 30 second life span wingmen vs. dozens of waves of shivans. Hell, even the NTF did that too!
-
Try it on Insane. I can't kill a wing of Maras on Insane. But I suck.
-
i can't kill a wing of maras on medium :blah:
-
Once when i installed FS2 the difficulty was at insane. :blah: Me and my wing men were killed within a minute. :blah:
-
how come people NEVER check the options the first time they ever play a game???
-
Once when i installed FS2 the difficulty was at insane. :blah: Me and my wing men were killed within a minute. :blah:
Default it's at Easy.
-
I can take down two waves of Mara, based on the correct circumstances. I've done quite a bit of dogfighting, alone and on insane, against at least eight maras. I had a nice trick--try to kill one fighter at a time and use a support ship (or 20) as a decoy. Quite literally, I went up to the 20-some support ship in a single mission. They're invaluable as they're useless outside of making you a sitting duck for 30 seconds. Anyways--just keep moving at variable speeds (not just keeping at maximum throttle), drop your weapons energy and raise your engines energy. Afterburner bursts let you dodge missiles when you are low our out of CMs. Still, with about 10 minutes, you can destroy 20 maras. Some of them you just have to kill from a good distance (I prefer to approach from 1km out and fire two double-sets of a hornets or a full bank of rockeyes)... the rest you're dodging them and their shots.
