Title: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Post by: jr2 on July 13, 2007, 03:30:05 am
I didn't feel like creating a new thread, so I'l just add this stuff here, at the very beginning of the first post of this thread.

If you have problems with any of the FreeSpace games, please post at the FreeSpace & FreeSpace Open Support board. This is General FreeSpace Discussion board: you know, just some general stuff about FreeSpace. Preferrably no problem-solving here, kthxbai.

If you are having problems with FreeSpace, FreeSpace 2 or FreeSpace Open, please read through the Troubleshooting FAQ (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.0.html). It lists all the most common problems and solutions, and in 95% of the cases, it helps you solve whatever problem it is you're having. If you can't find an answer to your question there, feel free to ask; we're here to help you. But if you are going to start a thread about a problem, do it according to the following guidelines:
- modding-related questions (like what tools to use when modding) belong in the FreeSpace Modding board
- FRED-related question belong to the FRED Discussion board
- problems with total conversions (like The Babylon Project or Wing Commander Saga) belong to their respective boards
- mod/campaign-specific problems belong either to the mod's release thread or just in the Missions and Campaigns board
- all other problems (like installation problems) belong to the FreeSpace & FreeSpace Open Support board.

By posting in the right place you'll increase the chances of someone replying and helping you, and also help keep HLP in order. Thank you.
-- Jeff Vader

From karajorma's BtRL Tech Help and FAQ Thread (http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showpost.php?p=62754&postcount=2):

About 90% of the time this sort of error is related to one of three sound errors or a graphics one.

1) You didn't install OpenAL (http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx); also found at www.openal.org ). If you didn't run this before running the game, run it now and see if that cures the problem.
2) Your OpenAL install is corrupt (Windows users check Windows\System32 for either ct_oal.dll or nvopenal.dll. These are the OpenAL 1.0 .dlls and they are causing the screwup. Delete them and run the OpenAL installer again). If that doesn't work try deleting OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll and then running the OpenAL installer again.  NOTE: Re-installing drivers for your sound card, or installing drivers for a different sound card might install OpenAL 1.0 over your current OpenAL.
3) You (windows users only) selected something other than Generic Software from the Launcher's Audio tab. Switch it back.

4) If you have an Intel-based on-board graphics card, you might have to try Direct 3D. FIRST, TRY UPDATING YOUR DRIVERS FROM INTEL (http://www.intel.com)! (direct link to download center here (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx), works as of 6/17/08, select your GFX product from the left panel).  If this doesn't work, and you must use Direct3D, keep in mind that it's currently unsupported; which means if you get graphical problems using this option, don't cry about it... you were warned!  ;)

4) Is BtRL specific. It won't affect FS2_Open. You might want to make that a suggestion to try D3D on Intel cards though. :)

Yeah. Looks better to me. You might want to explain that unsupported means that you're largely on your own if you get graphical glitches.

I'd sticky this.  1 and 2 are VERY common problems to FS2 Open.

Done for now :) But I think I'm going to take a look at un-stickying one of two of the stickies in the next day or so.

Quote from: that thing I made and is in a stickied thread for all to see and easily access on the FSO support board.
Mod Installation: Playing mods with FSO is very simple. Put all of the mod contents into it's own folder inside the main FS folder (just like you did with the Media VPs, except a different name). Now, create a text file in that folder using notepad. Copy and paste this into it:

Code: [Select]

[launcher]
image255x112 = ;
infotext     = This is a Freespace Modifacation ;
website      = ;
forum        = http://www.hard-light.net/;

[multimod]
secondrylist = ,mediavps;

Save it as "mod.ini". Make sure it saves as an ini file!! There! Now you can use your mods and the Media VPs at the same time.

Erg.... I will explain later, maybe... either that or make a tutorial.  Go read karajorma's FAQ (top of HLP page you're looking at > External Sites > The FreeSpace FAQ), why don't you?  It'd be much easier on me.  XD

OpenAL may cause trouble sometimes........i don't think it will cause problems most of the time..........Maybe your right about steps 1 and 2......

At least half of the problems I deal with on a daily basis are OpenAL related. It's not OpenAL itself that's the problem. The problem is the installation of OpenAL. Either people don't have it or they have a corrupt version of it.

I think he means we need a copy here in General FreeSpace Discussion as this is likely where newb's would visit with a problem FS_Open not starting. They probably wouldn't even think of looking in the support forum as that could be support for this board and not for the game!

I know its been a while since this thread was posted in, however, I wanted to add to the issue of OpenAL corruption. I think it most often occurs when someone installs new sound drivers, or replaces a sound card, even if it uses the same drivers as before, e.g., going from one SB Live! card to another that will actually work with the Live! Drive IR you just got. When you switch sound hardware or drivers under windows, please reinstall OpenAL before attempting to run anything that uses it.

Many drivers install old versions of OpenAL. It might be worth warning people to expect the possibility that changing drivers might result in the install of v1.0.

I can confirm that FreeSpace SCP runs in OpenGL on an Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset Family graphics card.

jr2, you should also add that users with Intel graphics cards should get their graphics adapters updated to the latest version. All the solutions listed in the first post of this thread did not work for me until I updated my graphics cards.

If quazwsk/someone else with an Intel card can confirm this and if jr2 shows no signs of activity during the next few days, I think I can edit the stickied thread on the Support board (it's the same set of instructions written by jr2, except that no one has replied to that thread).

Hey, guys!  I recently got the 3.6.10 SCP Beta and got it installed, but I'm having a problem.  When I clicked on the ready room, my game crashed during the loading.  I've had this happen to me before on the earlier builds, but that would happen after about five to ten missions were done.  That I could handle, but this is different.  I'm not sure what to make of it.  I'm just curious if this has happened to anyone else.

AND BEFORE ANYONE ASKS, YES, I TRIED REPORTING THIS BUG, BUT THE CONFRAMATION E-MAIL WON'T SHOW IN MY INBOX!!!  Can anyone help me?  I may try to trobleshoot this problem my self, but I may need help.

Never mind.  I think I found the problem.  I think I missed a few 3.6.9 VP files.

Usually it means you don't actually have the game in the folder you're trying to run the game from.

If you only used the FS2_Open installer bear in mind you do actually need the retail game too. There's a link to Good Old Games where you can buy the game for $6 on that thread though.

Oh, but you do need it. FSO is simply an improved version of the game engine. All the resources are still in FS2 and you'll need them. Much in the same manner you cannot drive succesfully with just a new engine: you'll need the rest of the car as well.

Incidentally, this issue, among many other common issues, is depicted in the stickied "Troubleshooting FAQ" thread on the Support board, with solutions.

There used to be places on the internet that had both FS and FS2 for free download, but I think there all gone now, I got FS at a thrift store, and FS 2 off the internet from a place that didn't charge cause it was going out of business.

But I'll look around and see if theres any free sites still alive and kicking.

Anyone caught posting links to FS2 for download other than an official site such as GoG will be banned. I don't care what bull**** reason they give for it.

Oh trust me everything I'd post would be official retail sites offering things for free, I don't do warez or underground sites, and I don't allow my kids to either.
So I'd definetly email you and ask if it was legal before I posted it on here.

Don't matter anyway, the place I got my copy from went under about 4 or 5 years ago and so far everybody seems to want a minimum of $6 US for FS2.
I still wish I'd bought a copy at Wal Mart back in 2000, they had FS and FS2 BOTH for $9.99 on their "we won't have this much longer " shelf

Well, at karajorma reminds us that we're not Babylon 5... :doubt:

I was thinking that only the FS2 VP files are needed to run FS2_Open. That's how the game works on Mac, see. There's no need for the original FS2.exe or fred2.exe.

thats one difference between Mac and PC, I can get it to run on Linux too with just the FS2 SCP, but only the SCP parts of the game will run, the FS and FS2 retails wnot, but then I'm not in the habit of putting the Linux drive in here to often since I still don't have it the way I want it.

Oh BTW Lobo looks like GoG and a few other retail sites are all thats left having FS,. I found the original disks on Ebay, but I'd liek to get a copy of FS 2 with teh case it came in too:)

That's the same way it works on Windows, too.  I could delete my copies of FS2.exe and fred2.exe and not affect anything at all, other than my ability to run retail FS2 or FRED2.  However, the fact that the retail FS2 VPs are required to run FS2_Open is the very reason that a retail copy of the game is required.

Dunno, I usually use Opera web browser anyway, I used FF yesterday cause it automatically opens FF when I click a link in the email, which is Thunderbird, I would use Opera's email, but setting up all those filters for all the loads of email I get is a real pain, I have a friend that does stuff like that so he's working on a way to get Thunderbird t set as the default email in Opera too.

Indeed it has (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.0.html). In addition to the fact that the error message explains itself quite thoroughly. And the very same question was asked and answered on page 3 of this thread.

kk no one is trying 2 b insulting but it's just that it's also insulting in a way that u don't do any research here but instead just assume that ur problem is unique and start asking about it even after i've hunted down all the most common issues and written them into a comprehensive list with my own blood and even stickied it onto the support board so that people could see it and read it and notice "damn i have this issue and there is a solution 2 it here now i won't have 2 bother those people by asking the same question again" and act accordingly and save time 4 us all because u see if u search these forums 4 a while it will take u some time but u will find an answer 2 ur question and ur problem will b solved whereas if u just barge in here and ask it will take u some time and then it will take us some time 2 stop what we were doing and answer and then it will take u some time 2 come back and see what we answered and in total it will take a lot of time and the point of at least the stickied threads on the support board is 2 save time 4 us all so that we could b happier but even still please support the FS2 license holders and buy FS2 from GOG and we will all b happy and if u have more problems feel free 2 ask since no one seems 2 really read the stickied threads anyway and we will answer ur questions as long as they are about freespace

Punctuation is fun.

So let me get this straight... You are mad at me for being confused? I thought the game came with the download so the error made no sense to me so i wouldnt even know where to start to look for a help topic. Since i had no start of point my only option was to skim to find a topic that helped. You cannot be mad at me for not having all the facts and to only ask for help to get flamed by someone who clearly just wants to raise their post count.

This is the error i keep receiving trying to run the game I have OpenAL installed without problem and i have moved nothing out of the folder i installed the game in so #1 of the error doesnt pretain to it and i have uninstalled, Redownloaded, Reinstalled etc. and nothing.

I'm no rocket scientist or anything but the error code itself says " Numbers 2 and 3 can be fixed by installing or reinstalling FreeSpace 2. If neither of these solutions fixes your problem you've found a bug and should report it.

That in itself tells me I need to break out my FS disks and start with disk 1.
Not to sound like an ass cause I have my own problems with FS sometimes, but it sounds like you need to read a lot more.

No. I am not mad at confused people. I am disappointed with confused people who don't read the manuals and the support sections. The error report itself should have alarmed you. If you're running FSO from your FS2 folder, the FS2 installation must be corrupted or missing altogether. If reinstalling or in this case redownloading doesn't fix it, one should wonder whether the Installer downloads FS2 at all. There is a big note of it in the first post of this thread, as well as on the Installer website. And on the support board. Actually, there is a comprehensive list of the most common errors on the support board and this one is included exactly for the reason that a number of people think that the Installer downloads FS2.

Partially it would seem that the name "FreeSpace and FreeSpace Open Support" doesn't properly give the impression that there would be support for FreeSpace and FreeSpace Open on that board. Perhaps it should be changed to "Help is here!" or something.

Furthermore, I am not the one flaming here, nor am I interested in my post count. Except in regards to the HLP cards. I merely answered your comment about the fact that your question has been answered already. You started a rampage because of that post for reasons I cannot understand. If you do not have issues with FreeSpace at the moment, you are free to stop posting on this board for now.

Press F2 to take you to your options menu then go to Control Config and ship at the bottom of the screen, click on your pitch axis, and then click on invert at the bottom of the screen.

I thought all GOG games were patched up to the latest version? Doesn't it say on the game catalogue page? In any event, don't see that it would cause any problems if you installed patch 1.2 if the game is already patched to 1.2! :)

The patch is only really important if you're using retail though, right? I thought it was fully patched when I bought it, but I'm not really certain how I would tell given that the file versions are listed as 1.0.0.1... Unless of course this means that the game isn't patched after all.  :p

In any case, it hasn't affected me negatively in any regard. Is there a specific benefit to using the patch?
Title: Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Post by: Jeff Vader on January 21, 2010, 12:50:59 pm
The retail Launcher, FRED and Root_fs2.vp are changed by the patch. So basically, there probably aren't any too drastic errors that a user can face, apart from the hacked table warnings in multiplayer.

I'd recommend making sure you're running 1.2, though. If in doubt, download the cleverly named HotU Crack Pack from karajorma's FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/Downloads/HotUv1.20Pack.rar), extract the retail Launcher, FRED and Root_fs2.vp from it and copy them over the existing files in your \freespace2\ folder.
Title: Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Post by: Thaeris on January 21, 2010, 01:02:04 pm
The only concern there is the "Root_fs2.vp though, right? As I don't use the retail launcher, .exe, or the retail release of FRED, those things really should not affect me. I also haven't used multi ever, so that's one less concern.

...What I could do is see what would happen if I downloaded the game again from GOG. If it's patched, I don't see any reason for why it wouldn't have been updated. By the way, the patch was 1.02.

GOG has a typo/misspelling/misunderstanding. The latest version of FS2 is 1.2.

Is there a specific benefit to using the patch?

If I remember correctly, there are two benefits given when you patch retail to 1.2:

1. it's a No-CD patch; and
2. you can create jump holes in FRED2.
Title: Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Post by: Jeff Vader on January 22, 2010, 11:07:00 am
1. it's a No-CD patch; and
The original official patch isn't, as far as I know. And with FSO, that particular feature would still be irrelevant.

jump holes

Strange... The file version when viewing the .exe from the outside lists as 1.0.0.1. However, upon opening the retail .exe, the options screen lists the version as 1.2... It seems I have nothing to worry about...  :p

That might be a good point to note for those who are unsure of what version they got from GOG...

Freespace 2 has can be played as well, when I am playing the the mission that is the nebula this starts on the second disk and the third has the same issue the graphics slow down (only in the nebula missions) to when I can not play these missions at all I figure this is a video issue but how to fix it I do not know. to aid in a fix here is my specs.

PC home built older

OBJECTION!
It's from Freelancer, one of the best games of it's time and one of the best Elite-style games at all, highly moddable and pretty much the only Elite-style game I really liked, as it's economy isn't as overcomplicated as X series. I have some really great memories associated with it.
I think (I'm not 100% sure, as I played Freelancer long ago) it can be called Freespace of Elite-style games, but as I recall it lacks Source Code Project.
And yes, the quote is from there, as are jump holes (natural jump points alternative to jumpgates, good for smuggling things and flying throught hostile systems).

Hey, if you increase the "Sensitivity" of your mouse in your options, and in your control panel, won't it significantly increase your manuverability, and ultimately, your dogfighting skills?

This is one "cheat" I just recently discovered... ;)
Title: Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Post by: Androgeos Exeunt on May 24, 2010, 07:56:45 am
That's not a cheat. It's a preference, and it's something everyone knows already.

Some people are unable to handle extreme twitchiness, so they choose a lower amount of sensitivity.
Title: Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Post by: Dilmah G on May 24, 2010, 08:16:55 am
It's just a matter of getting used to it, IMO. I could handle insane sensitivity when my mouse wasn't half broken and my joystick wasn't stiff.
Title: Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?

Title: Re: Having problems with FreeSpace?
Post by: Androgeos Exeunt on May 25, 2010, 07:59:31 am
It won't, but you'll find that your ship responds faster when you're really yanking it to one side. This can make a difference between evading a missile without countermeasures and having your face merged with two Harpoons.

I only use the stick for now, tried the mouse and even as low of a setting I can use the stick is still faster, Only thing I use the mouse for on my sidewinder is the bank control, that way the rudder control on the stick won't make me roll over when I don't want to roll over :)

The engine does not use D3D, ever; you've been running on OpenGL the whole time even with D3D selected.

Please try turning up the resolution and color depth. 640x480 and 16 bit color are probably way too low.
Title: Re: Black-blinking menu and game

Quote
Initializing OpenGL graphics device at 640x480 with 16-bit color...

...is likely the problem here.

If you've tried changing the video settings, the problem is likely Windows' UAC. The Launcher might not have the required permissions to change the settings from default. Run the Launcher as administrator at least once to create a few registry entries, set up the appropriate graphics resolution and bit depth, then try again.

You may also end up having trouble with the game being unable to save a pilot file; this can be (as far as I know) averted by taking ownership of the FS2 directory in Windows' security properties of the directory.

I try reinstall it, run it as administrator, set 1680x1050, 32-bit, nothing. The animation when you start a game is blinking too. It looks as driver problem maybe. I tried everything and start to feel hopeless...

Problem resolved!

Fail was in ATi display driver distributed via Automatic Updates in Windows. I downloaded ATi Legacy 10.2 driver for Vista 64 and it works fine.

One small problem persists, my mouse goes too slow in play..

Hello.
I have the frozen picture with sound problem... i looked up the solutions and found that i should choose openGL as the renderer, but the problem is, when i try changing it, there is no openGL to select, only D3D in various resolutions.

the game freezes the pic in the "lion at the door" mission right before damage control ship enters.

update: i changed the resolution to a higher one and it helped me trough "lion at the door" but the same thing happened when i was playing the mission where i have to destroy 2 shivan cruisers or something like that...  :banghead:

thanx

But as I said, you already have a copy of the retail FS2, because you said it yourself. You should now just patch it to 1.2 and then install FSO with either the Installer linked to by The E or manually.

A laptop, it would seem. Some googling revealed that your particular line of graphics card has had rather poor OpenGL support and if the latest drivers from the laptop manufacturer didn't help, things really suck for that particular laptop model. There are a few options I can think of:
1) Buy a new computer.
2) Take your chances with Omega drivers (http://www.google.fi/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&sqi=2&ved=0CBkQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.omegadrivers.net%2F&ei=VawUTrCBOojIswaS4uSMDw&usg=AFQjCNH0fJIteqpLKJZbzNxQGkfUg0G8Qw).
3) Try installing the latest possible (or at least new enough) AMD gpu drivers with Mobility Modder (http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php).

To finish this topic off;
Just downloaded newest catalyst thingy from amd and things are working. At least Derelict is loading via the launcher so i'm gonna assume the rest will work as well.

Hello, I've been trying to run the automated installer:

http://scp.indiegames.us/bnr_installer.php

I would like to play the Freespace 1 campaign before I play the sequel. However, this automated installer (when I run it) says that it can't download the FSport folder or file.

Is the above link associated with this website or is there a more current automated installer?

Try using one of the other guides such as this one (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=78710.0); the auto-installer is currently borked.  Make sure you get the MediaVPs if at all possible (yes it tells you how in the above link).

EDIT: Oh, and to play FS1 first, you must download and use the FSPort mod (the above link tells you how to install mods; get the FSPort mod here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=76733.0)

And, :welcome:

EDIT2: I didn't mention this, but of course, if you are having any difficulties, please let us know and we'll gladly help you out!  :)

Hello,

Sorry for my english, it is not my native language :).

I have a quick question regarding graphics performance. I have FSO inf. 3.6.13r. + blue planet and i recently installed shadows from valhadil topic, and i m experiencing very severe fps drops from 80 fps to like 8-12 fps in missions. I had no fps problems before I intalled shadows patch.
And my question is this; is my notebook graphics too weak or what? Ive got Mobility Radeon 5650 1gb, 4 gb mem. + Icore M330, with Win7 64. Is that too weak? Or maybe i missed a patch or some tweaking adjustment?

Thx for help.

The shadows feature is still very much a work-in-progress, and I don't think Valathil has completed all of the optimizations he has planned for it.  Mobile graphics cards do tend to be weaker than their desktop versions, but you do have a dedicated card as opposed to an integrated chip, so that's a big plus.  Hopefully as the feature is further developed, you'll be able to enable them and still get an acceptable framerate. :)

unclejoe,

Do try upgrading your graphics drivers to the latest version, sometimes that helps with graphics performance issues.  If you have a Mobility Radeon HD 5650, the latest drivers for 7 64-bit can be found on the ATI AMD site here (http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx).  (as of today's date, latest is version 12.1, released January 25, 2012)

Your framerate is capped at 60 because of vsync, a feature that provides a much smoother playing experience by synchronising your framerate with your screen's refresh frequency. You can turn it off in the launcher under the performance section, but it'll result in frame-splitting and instability in some situations.

Game Speed -> "Disable vertical sync". Also check your GPU driver control panel that you aren't forcing v-sync from there.

Also, you could have included both things in a single post instead of double-posting.

I too am having a similar issue to Ariel, not the need for over 60 fps but the 3d shockwaves.
I do have them enabled in the launcher and I recently attempted to install one of Nighteye's Shockwaves, putting the files in question in mediavps_3612/data/effects folder and mod/data/effect to no avail. Is there any other additional download I may have missed that is required?

Also, without Nighteye's the 3d shockwave still doesn't work.

I've recently caught on to the fact that there are mods for FS2 so I installed the game from GOG. I'm new to modding games so I read up the thread which gave very clear instructions. Everything was going well, or so it seemed when I tried to launch the game. For some reason, I'm asked to insert CD 2. Obviously something went haywire so I've no idea what I've done wrong. Can someone help? Thanks.

It would be helpful - and might possibly make it easier to help you - if you described exactly what you did. Which exactly FS2 file did you open and so on.

Are you trying to run retail (from GOG.com) FreeSpace files or those of the FreeSpace Open?

If it is GOG.com exe then

It's Free Space Open. I made several searches and made  series of jumps and found two guides from here (I lost them again somehow, I'll have to look again). The first one didn't make any sense to me, I spent hours trying to make the mod to work. I postpone it to another day, found the second guide which is very clear. That was when I realized the first guide assumed the person reading it, already knew all about the files. Hence, I was trying to do something I didn't understand and it was frustrating.

The second guide correctly assume the person is an idiot.  :D Which is true. So it went A, B, C.  I followed the steps, installed FS2 at C:/games/FS2 and not to put it at the (x86) directory, shift files, etc, etc. And it's called FSO. I made the adjustment to the launcher, directing it to the MOD (I was trying for Blue Planet) and an error message popped up. I read the steps again; it seemed I did everything as stated. So I went to look at the files, poking at a few and then the game launched (I hit the file fs2_open_3_7_0) but it asked me for CD#2 at the main menu.

I'm a total noob, I know.

Do you have a CD/DVD/Whatnots disk drive(s)? If you have then make sure it/they has/have nothing in it/them and try again. Other thing you should try is to create fs_open.log file as described in http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.0.html & http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.msg1180359.html#msg1180359 (for instructions as to how to get it and how to post it).

I'll take a look at the code and check why that message is (still) being sent.

Yeah, if you do that, I'm pretty sure windows is just gonna run "java.exe FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar", while it should be running "java.exe -jar FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar" to run the jar.

Anyway, from the sound of it your java install didn't configure itself properly. You can try launching the installer directly from the command line prompt, running java -jar on the installer, although I don't have time to write detailled instructions on how to do so right now, sorry :(

Could you post exactly what you typed into the command prompt? Can you also post where the FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar is? i.e.  the command prompt needs to be in the same directory that the jar file is in, or you need to give a full/relative path to it.

maybe something like:

"java.exe -jar c:\users\me\Downloads\FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar"

Perhaps there was a space in the path.  In which case, you need quotes.

Code: [Select]
java -jar "c:\games\freespace 2\fsopeninstaller.jar"
Running it without the quotes will cause the command interpreter to stop at "freespace" and put the rest in as an argument to that command, e.g., it will pass "2\fsopeninstaller.jar" to the non-existent "c:\games\freespace.exe"

It did import the .reg file successfully. I also went into regedit and made sure that all the Volition/Freespace2 keys under HKEY_USERS as well as HKEY_CURRENT_USER grant full control to "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES". Ultimately, I was never able to get this working under the release (0.10.1) wxlauncher version, but I finally tried the 0.11.0 pre-release which worked right away.

Thanks for the reply!
