Title: C&C95 Freeware!
Post by: Mefustae on September 02, 2007, 12:20:01 am
In "celebration" of the 12th Anniversary of the release of C&C95, EA has graciously decided to release it to the public free of charge. (http://www.commandandconquer.com/intel/default.aspx?id=61#NewsMain)

Now all you damn kids who missed out on playing it can get a load of classic strategy gaming at its finest. ;)

Edit: You're a champ, CP.

I moved it over.

This is a must-have if you haven't played it already. Even the intro cutscene is a classic. I like the commercial with the guy drinking what looks like motor oil. :D

****in' A.  The original C&C was awesome, and i'm glad that EA's decided to do this.

Now, time to go blow **** up with my Commandos again :D

Odd, getting a 404 here :(

The server is apparently being hammered and the downloads are pretty slow, but it should be mirrored on other sites by now.

I still think this was the best C&C game, especially in terms of the story and the singleplayer mission design. The campaigns were actually somewhat nonlinear, with different map choices for several missions and some cases where the objectives and cutscenes were different as well.

Is it up on FileFront yet?

Since this is apparently the version they shipped with The First Decade, it'll probably need the LAN patch to get it working online.

was it C&C95 that had the GDI Texas-Ranger-Style Commando ("I got a little present for ya!") ?

No, Tiberian Dawn did not have a Texas Ranger style commando.  It had a badass Vietnam War Sergeant style commando ("I got a present for ya!") :p.

Gaze upon him in his 12-pixel glory!

Note the stylish red hair, indicative of how badass he is.

It's a pity they didn't port the DOS installer for the Windows version - That was a work of art alone ;)

Enjoy it.

Although RA still my favourite of the series, mainly because I grew up with it.  Yeah, sure, it was basically the first C&C but with a different coat of paint, but goddamn it, the alternate WW2 was engrossing.

I basically grew up with that too and actually got C&C a year after RA. I spent far more time with RA due to its skirmish mode and integrated multiplayer as well as the fact that it was much more moddable (still have my old TC (http://cp.nukelol.com/FutureWars.zip) for it), but I liked C&C better when I played it for the first time. Many RA mods in the old days actually replaced a lot of the stuff with the C&C equivalents.

Does this release come with the Covert Operations expansion, by the way? It was essentially just a map pack, but some of the standalone missions were quite interesting.

Only ever played Tiberium Sun myself. Played RA a little but never really got into it. Might lookfor 'em on ebay.

Yep.  Thats the one!

"Hahaha!  That one was LEFT handed!"

Tiberium Sun was good.  Not great, but good.  The Titans were pretty cool though, and the updated Ion Cannon beam looked awesome.

TS isn't the worst C&C game of all time(That one goes to Sole Survivour, a game so bad it was omitted from The First Decade completely), but it does suffer from being a bit overserious.  Plus goddamn it Nod's chem missle was annoying.

may as well look for cannon fodder while I'm at it. Seems I'm big on nostalga at the moment..... :doubt:

Does it work on XP?

Yep...works on XP...but I think you need a tiny little patch to make it work properly.

If you are playing with GDI, it's a good idea to use the firestorm wall to destroy the missile. :p

I know that, but it's still annoying as ****.  Goddamn it NOD was annoying n that game in general.

One thing that seriously annoys me about lots of game publishing companies is that they keep golden classics like this locked up forever and ever. The best example of this was Apogee. If you look on their website for the late 1980's vintage game called "crystal caves", they still charge $15 for it. It's wrong, so wrong.

I imagine that's it, or Mefustae would have mentioned otherwise.

doesn't work iirc. Though in single player the Comp-NOD becomes obcessed with destroying the firestorm walls so it's a handy decoy.

Yes Firestorm does work against the missile...I usually spent most of my money developing a firestorm wall just to stop that damned missile.

TS wasn't a very fun game in skermish mode for reasons like this...good fun for the single player but everything else was annoying and slow.  The original C&C, Red Alert, Red Alert 2, and everything since has been much more my style.

what does it mean when it says nod iso and GDI iso? are those versions or something?

There are two CDs, the Nod and GDI. One for the Nod campaign, the other for, yeah. You can play the game with either one.

I never liked the CnC games that much even though I have all of them (except the very first). For me it's only been good as a mindless time-waster, which isn't a bad thing. Just not very challenging or interesting gameplay.

You need the NOD CD in for the NOD missions and the GDI CD in for GDI missions.  Its mostly because of all of the FMV they included.

TS was actually very good online, better than RA in my opinion. It was still pretty fast paced (like the two games before it) but the sides and units were much better balanced.

Skirmishes are indeed faster and more fun in RA though. The TS AI is far more defensive than the RA one. I tend to play TS with the Eternity mod instead (one of the most crazy, WTF-inducing TCs I have seen for any game :D).

There are several unused action videos on the CDs that are worth a look. You can use a fanmade program called XCC AV Player to look at them.

I wish they still had the action scenes in more recent C&C games. I used to love those. C&C and RA had a lot of them, TS had some but not as many, and RA2 and C&C3 basically had none.

Have you enabled "Windows 95" compatibility mode ? And have installed the XP patch (thipx32.dll) ?
