Title: (away|toward) norms transparent

in the "thing" when pressing f3 in mainhall (how is this correctly called?)... at render options there are two options "away norms transparent" and "toward norms transparent".
what do they do? (ships are getting darker, i know, i know, but what exactly?)
and what is the difference between the 2 options?
how can i enable them ingame?
