Title: I need a driving sim...
Post by: Fineus on November 27, 2007, 07:12:14 am
I have this sudden urge to drive something again, and I'm looking for a game which gives the best sensation of speed. Preferably whilst driving something Aston Martin related.

I'm tempted to re-install Test Drive Unlimited but I'm not 100% sure I can be bothered. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Ballistics, by far. I haven't seen anything else even remotely in the same league as far as this aspect goes. Speeds of 2000mph or more aren't uncommon and it actually feels like you're going that fast. It's not exactly a conventional driving game though, as you ride these hover motorcycle type things through enclosed tubes.

Burnout Revenge = speed

One of the few you can find that does give a sense of speed
and looks pretty decent while doing it.

The only racing game I ever enjoyed was Carmegeddon 2: Carpocalypse Now, which was a blast.  Going the wrong way on purpose, wholesale vehicular homicide, winning by smashing your opponents....good stuff.

MIDTOWN MADNESS FTW!

No but seriously, they are great games (1 and 2) and have a huge fanbase and many d/l-able cars (Astons included)

Forza Motorsport 2 if you have a 360.  The next edition of Grand Turismo is due out for the PS3 as well. The fans seem really excited about that one and the graphics are amazing.  Forza 2 is almost as good but a little light on the numbers of tracks available.  Fantastic array of cars and several Aston Martins for driving pleasure.

TrackMania Nations ESWC (http://www.trackmanianations.com/) is a good one (free).  There are pay versions that have more types of cars & tracks (TM Nations ESWC has only one car, and only one type of track, but it will give you an idea of what it can do, and it has online multiplayer... takes awhile to get the handle of it, though).  Also get the patch to 1.79  (The game can send you to the right location for downloading it if you want, just hit that you want to check for upgrades when going online.)

EDIT: Just realized it was you, Kal... get them from GameUpdates.org : Game (http://www.gameupdates.org/details.php?id=131) | Patch 1.75 to 1.79 (http://www.gameupdates.org/details.php?id=1681)

ive been playing carmageddon 2: carpocalypse now. you can win the race, but whats the fun in that, good thing you can also win by annihilating the competition, or killing all the pedestrians in the level. there are mission levels too, for example one where you had to jump from building to building to destroy all the satellite dishes. physics are pretty tweaky, but somewhat realistic. the games so old you need a glide wrapper and a bunch of other hacks to make it even run on a modern os. the cars are kinda cartoony, but who cares, you get to slaughter pedestrians :D

I'd recommend WipeOut but I'm sure Aston Martin hasn't made maglev vehicles yet.

I found some free simulators the other month, looking to test my force feedback stick.

Racer is a free cross-platform car simulation project (for non-commercial use), using professional car physics to achieve a realistic feeling and an excellent render engine for graphical realism. Cars, tracks and such can be created relatively easy (compared to other, more closed, driving simulations). The 3D, physics and other file formats are documented. Editors and support programs are also available to get a very customizable and expandable simulator. OpenGL is used for rendering.

I love the way you can repair damage to the car in real time, it always makes me chuckle.
