Title: Error: Could not load...
Post by: hohoho0214 on December 21, 2007, 01:56:40 pm
...could not load WarpMap01 anim file and then after clicking ok another error: could not load WarpMap02 anim file.  These two errors always pop up right after I click on start or continue a campaign.

This is what it looks like:

Error: Could not load WarpMap01 anim file

File:J:\src\cvs\fs2_open_3_6_9.final\code\Fireball\FireBalls.cpp
Line: 697
[This filename points to the location of a file on the computer that built this executable]

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Please provide a few details:

1. How did you install FreeSpace?
2. Are you playing FreeSpace Open?
3. A screenshot of at least your \freespace\ folder might help.

The error itself seems to state that the game is unable to find some animation file for the subspace effect, which in turn suggests that you are missing something important.

I installed the game through the Freespace Open installer that was provided on this site and so I do believe that I am playing Freespace Open.  And here is the address to the ss: http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t212/hohoho0214/FS.jpg

Hmm, a quick glance doesn't reveal anything wrong there. How about the mediavps folder? What do you have there? Hang on a sec, I'll find the vp that has the warp effect files.

Edit: The retail warp effects are in the sparky_fs2.vp, which should be 248mb. The mediavp ones are in the mv_effects.vp, which should be 89,5mb.

Here is the link to the mediavps:

I checked the sparky and effects and they are the correct size.  I also ran the installer again and found that I did not download and install the FS2 demo, Just Another Day, 2, 3, and the JAD3 Cutscene Pack.  Might those be the problem?

Nah. The FS" demo is, well, the FS2 demo. Quite fun but definitely not necessary. And JADs are humorous campaigns that are also fun, but you don't need them to run FSO. But one thing: you seem to have adv_effects and its patch in the mediavps. You might want to remove them unless you're absolutely sure that your computer has enough juice to run them. They are quite heavy. Though they shouldn't be affecting this problem of yours in any way. The only thing that comes to my mind is that some file (possibly sparky or effects) is corrupt somehow.

Although at this point I'd like you to make sure that you are playing in OpenGL. Direct3D tends to be problematic.

I am indeed playing in OpenGL.  So is there any way to fix those files?

Apart from redownloading, no. And if redownloading with the Installer doesn't help, it most certainly means that the problem is at the server end. An optional download source would rock.

Or wait. If sparky is the corrupt file, you might concider downloading FS2 from Home of the Underdogs. It comes in a rar archive so you can then just extract either the sparky or all the files to your \freespace\ directory. Either way, it should work.

Ok thanks a lot for your help.  I'll let you know if any problem arises.

Forget about it. Just put this (the new and improved sexier version of subspace by Trashman) into media vps. Shouldn't have any other problems.

*Cough* I didn't see that post.

Don't mention it. It's just my way of contributing to the FreeSpace community since I can't do anything constructive concerning models, missions and such.

I still find the 3.6.7 version sexier.

I still find the 3.6.7 version sexier.

Though I don't completely share your opinion, I have to admit that many of the old effects seem superior to their 3.6.8 versions. But now...there's 3.6.9 ;7

We are all dumbasses. Look in the very first picture of the FreeSpace 2 main folder. What do we see? 3.6.9 AND 3.6.10. Now, hohoho0214, I would like to mention that it is not a stable exe, not the final. It still contains quite some bugs. And if you are using 3.6.10 instead of 3.6.9, I recommend you change the setting to 3.6.9.

That too. But in that case it's a rather weird bug. I've never encountered such an issue with those 3.6.10 builds.

Actualy. hohoho0214, don't delete the executables yet...run the debug using both 3.6.9 and 3.6.10

Oi, there's no need to delete any builds, ever. Just switch to 3.6.9 and see if it works then. If not, and if the HotU trick fails, we'll have to come up with something else.

Having the same problem here, to the letter. Tried the HotU trick, but it failed miserably. Any new ideas, or has everybody moved on?

System specs? Graphics card? Graphics card driver version? Trying to use retail FreeSpace 2 or FreeSpace Open? If you are using FreeSpace Open then... with or without mediavps?

Also, have you tried any of the possible fixes above??

P3 1GHz, 198MB SDRAM, Intel 82810E chipset. Pitiful, isn't it?

Trying to run Freespace Open, with mediavps. Disabling mediavps gave me a temporary workaround, but the problem isn't solved, persay. Tried switching to OpenGL, but since my graphics set sucks balls, I can't run OpenGL 1.2, leaving me stuck with buggy DirectX. Kinda wish I hadn't deleted my retail ISO's, because now it's come down to getting this to run or going without.

I keep getting random freezes, too, but that's another issue.

Retail should still be there.  FS2_open does not break compatibility with retail.  If you want to run retail just run the freespace2.exe.  You can switch back and forth all you want.

The only problem is that you'll be missing the cutscenes unless you have them in MVE format.

And my pilot, since I converted without cloning. For some reason, I expected SPC to run without any major issues... oh well :D

It's probably caused by using DX
