Title: Framerate dropping
Post by: Ole on February 03, 2008, 11:35:26 am
I've got a little problem here. Everytime I look into a asteroid field in a mission, my framerate drops really low. As soon as I don't look into it (by looking back or just turning around) everything is fine. Now I never had this problem in retail (and I don't think I had it while using older MediaVps - using 3.6.10 at the moment) and I have absolutely no idea how to fix that. Everything else just runs fine, only these asteroids fields are problematic.

Most likely, it's just the asteroides in MediaVP 3.6.10's being a lot more resource-intensive than any previous asteroids.

What are your computer specs? And what kind of frame rates do you normally get, and how much exactly they drop with asteroids in view?

Normal rate is about 60 FPS (guess that's vsync enabled), asteroids slowing that down to as few as 6 FPS.
Specs are an Athlon XP 3000+, a Radeon X1950 Pro and 1.2 GB Ram.

Seeing that it's probably only the 3.6.10's asteroids my question would be, which files I'd have to replace to get the old 3.6.9 asteroids.

That's a pretty drastic framerate drop indeed.

What OS are you running and what set of GPU drivers are you using? Your PC *shouldn't* have that much FPS drop from asteroids - I've got an Athlon 64 3200+, a GeForce 7600GT and 3 GB DDR-SDRAM, and since FS2_Open in general demands more of the GPU than other components in the system, and considering your GPU is supposedly a bit more powerful than mine (?), you should have no problems (I get something like 60FPS->30-40 FPS drops with asteroid field in view). So a GPU driver problem might be what we're looking at, but then again it seems to be something in the 3.6.10 asteroids that triggers this problem.

You could also try running a debug build, there may be something going on that the regular build doesn't show you but which slows things down...

I'll leave the 3.6.9 replacement instructions to someone who has more insight on the matter.

Actually the GPU drivers are quite old , as the newer ones had several problems (read: games not even starting) when running together with an AGP version of the X1950 Pro. However, I just did a little research and from what I've found so far it seems like these problems finally got fixed. i'll try out installing the new ones and hopefully this'll fix this whole thing. If not, I'll come back to get those replacement instructions ;)

AGP (as opposed to PCI-E) might have something to do with the slowdowns as well, but I'm not quite sure about that... :nervous:

Well, bad luck concerning the new drivers - those screwed up FS2 Open completely :) (need to reinstall Win XP sometimes I guess). Switched back to older ones, got FS2 running again and now I guess I'm going to find a way to replace those asteroids. If anyone got an idea how to do this: I'd be grateful.

I would recommend switching to nVidia and never using ATi again, because every ATi card I've ever had has casued problems with FS2_Open since specular lighting was introduced.

Woolie, you win the prize for most pointless, inaccurate and above all expensive recommendation ever.

Have you tried just removing the Advancedeffects.vp from the Mediavps folder? Those are only for higher-end pcs!

Well before doing that, I'd like to know if there's any way to replace the new asteroids with older ones, seeing that except for the asteroids everything is running fine, even with advancedeffects.vp

Hey, me too. Asteroid fields kill my precious laptop with 3.6.10. Would it just be to extract the asteroid textures (and models?) from the 3.6.8's and placing to appropriate folders?

Asteroid related framerate drops will be fixed in the 3.6.10 final mediavps
