Title: Interests in the 158th
Post by: LtNarol on February 23, 2008, 04:25:51 pm
Hi all,  I've been told there's some interest in leftovers of the 158th project(s?).  It seems to me there are a couple options, and I'd like to know what the general community prefers.  Seeing as I can't seem to figure out how to post a poll on the new forums, I'm just going to do a hand count.  Please post only once.

Option 1:
We can release all project materials to the general community.  This is pretty straight forward, a RAR file goes up with models, textures, partially debugged missions, and a few other things here and there.

Option 2:
Selected release of actually completed materials.  This will save a lot of sifting through various bits and peices which are, well, in very early stages of development.

Option 3:
If there is sufficient interest in restarting the project (ie: there are people interested in working on it),  I can hand over what I have to that group and let them do with it as they will.

Any members of the dev team with interests or opinions should contact me privately via PM or email.

Cheers.

I would prefer option 2, although I think you could also release models and such that only require minor alteration (POF data, etc.) to make fully functional.

Thank you very, very much for posting this. :D

Option 2

Option 2 & 3.
If there are enough people who want to revive this project then by all means let it be revived.
If not option 2 and if there are pofs. that only need some alteration release those too.

Any option is better than letting it sit. I vote Option 2 just cause that seems to be the consensus, but I wouldn't mind seeing the half-done missions and such also.

What happened to the project? Chapter one was soooo close to completion.

If you were looking at releasing "Exposition", I'd suggest finishing up the interface and probably just dropping the attempt at getting it voice acted, from what it looks like on the website. I'd be more than happy to help if there's anything that has to do with tables or FRED to be finished up.

So I'd say release everything, but also have everything that is completed in a second package. (Options 1 and 2)

Finally, I'd really like to see this project active again, so if option 3 gets enough support, I can table fairly well and FRED satisfactorily. :)

I'd like to help. I'm FREDer, tabler and partially effecter. (Already working in BtRL team and others. Also check my stuff)

Option 1: So people can see things that otherwise would never see light of day. They can finish it off themselves, or at least find inspiration... Would be no different from any other model/project dump where you have completed and partial works but expanded like OTT release was, and that was Phenomenal...

Thanks Ltnarol for answering. At least one of you reacted to my PM's.

would anybody volunteer to continue the project? It looked great. Perhaps one day it could be reborn like the apocalypse project.

Voice acted? That's about as bad as letting it all decompose.

IMO, Option 2.

Please forgive my curiosity...

May we know the exact contents of the package you are <probably> going to share with the community? I'm asking for a list and hopefully screenshots.

Hey, how about this: I'll throw together a list of everyone who is interested in helping "rebirth" the 158th, then if LtNarol deems it okay, we can either officially take over production, or if they just release everything they have regardless of its completion, we can try and continue it unofficially.

So far I've seen:

thesizzler - tables, FRED
shiv_pl - tables, FRED, effector
Getter Robo G - voice acting

Anyone else wishing to do either of the above things, post so here, and be sure to include what you can do.

Unfortunately, the only thing I contributed to 158th was voice acting. I'd certainly do more of that for the previous role or others if given the opportunity in the future.

This needs more publicity. I'd think an announcement would do, but that might not be the most respectful thing to do.

The thread title got my attension, without added advertising.  :D

One of three things will happen..
Eather the project is reborn, and becomes stable again, or everything that is game worthy is released.. Or everything is released in a package. Its a win, win, win situation.  :D

By that you mean a "Neither winning nor losing"-"lose"-"lose slightly less", right?

It's a terrible shame that the original team couldn't complete it, but as most people believe, better someone do it rather than it sit there neglected. If only the worthy stuff is released, there's still a crap load of stuff that's there, but we don't know about. We wouldn't be able to try and continue the project if we had any respect for them. The only thing that makes the option you said last less bad is the fact that  we'll be able to restart the project.

In my most humble opinion, if option 1 is chosen, we can make an un-official continuation project at best.

If option 2 is chosen, they clearly either don't believe it could be satisfactorily continued or they don't want people trying to finish it. Either way, for some reason, they don't want a new dev team taking over for one or more of various reasons.

If option 3 is chosen, then the team will continue with the exact material that the original team left off with, and hopefully the occasional input of the original developers. Option 3 would be an official rebirth of the project, and IMHO the best choice.

Thank You LtNarol, no matter if just pieces are used by someone or maybe a map or image inspires something new at least some of the 158th legacy survives for the community...

The elongated Fenris type with the oversized guns made me smile, but got me thinking...  ;)

I made the best approximation I could of the Exposition ship and weapon tables. Considering that the balance feels about right when playing the missions, I think it's pretty much exactly the way it used to be.

EDIT: FS2 weapon sounds are just wrong with these new weapons. I think I might be able to whip up fancy effects and sounds for the weapons this weekend.

I also have some shinemaps for the Lethe, Styx, and Acheron. I'll probably bundle those with the effects and sounds. They're a bit crude, but they're better than nothing.

It's interesting to see that the material will be safeguarded.

Simple question: isn't apocalypse III the TAP mod?

Also, would people consider to "reconstruct" the 158th one day?

The rotors keep the ships from falling out of the sky because most of the action takes place in Earth's atmosphere. The EA used them, the CC used thrusters that pointed down.

It wouldn't be terribly difficult as Narol left us a nearly complete campaign.

Actually according to the website, there were 6 acts and exposition was the demo.

So does anyone want to set up an IRC discussion about this? It'd be really awesome if in addition to all the people interested in helping out we had a couple representatives from the original team at the discussion, LtNarol.

I'm free today from now until GMT 2:30AM (That would be about 10:30 to about 9:30 GMT-5, if anyone's curious).
