Title: MacOS X FS2_Open3.6.10 recent builds
Post by: Tinman on April 14, 2008, 02:45:40 pm
I am working on a campaign and i needed some new SEXP available in FS2_Open 3.6.10.
To check the MacOS compatibility I compiled a recent build today from svn. This one is working well with 10.4.11.
I do not know 10.5.2 compatibility, but please try...

The link to the file is in my sig...

MacOS X FS2_Open 3.6.10 build rev 4611 2008-05-01

MacOS X FS2_Open 3.6.10 build rev 4618 2008-05-06

MacOS X FS2_Open 3.6.10 build rev 4619 2008-05-15ay5<

Edit5: d/l the newer build rev4622, see sig
Edit6: d/l the newer build rev4689, (FS2_open, Wing Commander Saga, TBP) see sig

to download the Wing Commander Saga, TBP builds -> see sig
recent fs2_open builds -> download from the nightly builds forum

(use right mouse button and choose "Save as...")

Edit: use 7zX http://sixtyfive.xmghosting.com/ (http://sixtyfive.xmghosting.com/) to extract the archive

Edit2: changed the subject, link to the recent rev 4611 build (0501) added
Edit3: d/l the newer build rev4618 with fixed Mantis #1683
Edit4: d/l the newer build rev4619

btw: the "no thruster bug" is still present, but i try to post a recent build twice a month independent from source code changes

What is this file with the .7z ending? It's not recognizable by my system. Are you sure the extension is right?

EDIT: Never mind. I got it working. It works fine so far. And the annoying bug with the ATI cards is gone. I am using Leopard 10.5.2 with the latest graphics update installed.

Curious, what did you use for 7zip extraction on OS X?  EZ 7z or just pure command line P7Zip?

For some reason this build causes some weird errors for me.  The first is that some Shivan ships have no thrusters (not entirely sure if its confined to Shivans).  The second is that flak weapons don't work properly (they only explode if they hit something).  It also causes crashes in places where 3.6.9 final and the widescreen fix build didn't, but I can confirm that these issues have to do with code in SVN, as I experienced them with one of my recent builds (testing Turey's ship template code).  Wonder if I should Manticize this...

i found a trunk build from taylor here http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,52856.msg1072026.html#msg1072026 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,52856.msg1072026.html#msg1072026)
so you can check if the problem also is present in this older 2008-03-30 trunk build

my 2008-04-14 is also a trunk build (stable branch) so it is FS2_Open 3.6.10
do you use the 3.6.10beta mediavps?

FS2_open 3.6.10-> 3.6.10beta mediavps !
FS2_open 3.6.9  -> 3.6.8zeta mediavps !

Actually, I thought you should be able to use the 3.6.8 vps just fine with the newer builds, I just wouldn't use older builds with the new vps.  Any reason a new build would have issues with older vps?

Yes, I do use the 3.6.10 VPs.  They worked fine with 3.6.9 final though.

Is it just me, or does this build not support normal maps?

When I start FSO up it doesn't recognize the "-normal" or "-height" flags.

this is a trunk build, not one of taylor's XT builds -> no normal maps

So where can I get a Mac build that supports normal maps?

Well, there's here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44374.msg906045.html#msg906045), or maybe here (http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/willrobinson/Xt1208-osx.tgz).  One of those should have it.  I don't know of any later ones that Taylor's released, I thought there was a newer link somewhere but I can't find it right now.

Well I've tried both of those and the ships in the tech room are now invisible, except for the shine, glow maps, and glow points.

Mac XT builds are known to cause problems.  Try running in window mode.  Its the only way I've gotten anything to work correctly (its slow though).

Mmh.. I'm using Taylor's Xt1208 build, with -normal flag and 3.6.10 beta VPs, but normal maps are not actually used ingame. Is this expected behavior?

My settings: -spec -glow -env -mipmap -normal -ambient_factor 0 -spec_exp 16 -spec_point 0.5 -spec_static 0.5 -spec_tube 0.9 -ogl_spec 60 -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -warp_flash -fov 0.60 -dualscanlines -targetinfo -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -snd_preload -mod media_vps -no_emissive_light

I'm on Nvidia 8600, 10.5.2

Really the wrong place for that, but did you try window mode?
Title: Re: MacOS X FS2_Open3.6.10 recent builds

Normal mode is not working well in MacOS X at this time (1208XT). AFAIK it is working on PPC with Nvidia GfxCard in fullscreen and on Intel with AtiX1600 in window mode... so we have to wait a while until taylor will release a newer XT build for MacOS X...

(but you always can use Bootcamp if you want to  :nervous:)

You're right, I'll keep this short.

OK, windowed mode didn't help so i guess I'll go for BootCamp. Thx for the info.

can we go back to using rars for downloads ? 7zip is so obscure, and I think for many media files it's really not that much smaller than a good rar is.
Title: Re: MacOS X FS2_Open3.6.10 recent builds
Post by: chief1983 on May 26, 2008, 08:05:30 pm
True, but it's becoming less obscure as people realize it's nicer to have a truly free format instead of a proprietary format.  And it's not that obscure around here, I only know one person who has stubbornly refused to accept 7zips, and well...it's in his nature I think more than anything else.

it's just that when you are moving files around between computers, they hardly ever have a 7zip program installed, and especially for macs - the 7zip support blows.. Oh well.
Title: Re: MacOS X FS2_Open3.6.10 recent builds
Post by: chief1983 on May 26, 2008, 11:43:05 pm
Well, even on Windows, you don't even have rar support by default, so when I install a program, it's usually 7-zip (although there has been on occasion a spanned rar file it's had problems with).  I can't help that Apple is passing on the costs of including a license for an archiving utility to you and not bundling support for a free format.

YzX is the best 7z app currently on OSX imo.

If you need more control, go CLI.

Yes, 7zX is good.
Also, on Mac my favorite for unzipping almost anything is "The Unarchiver" - it even opens some windows .EXE archives! The remainder of these I can usually extract with Darwine.

Has anyone try the 3.6.10 Media VPs on recent builds?
I tried but all 3D objects got loss textures.

You should probably be looking at the recent GLSL Mac Fix build in Recent Builds to see if that helps much.  That will probably get committed to SVN in a day or two.

Thanks to all!
I check my configuration again.

My test configurations below:

 Under fs2_open build 5019
  with media vp 3.6.9...work fine.
  with media vp 3.6.10...texture lost

Command line configuration is set by FS Launcher 3.0 as
posetd at Mediavp3.6.10 board.

Leopard 10.5.6 Mac pro with GeForce 8800GT

jssdf,

As chief1983 suggested before, you should take a look at this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,60044.0.html) (very) recent build. The white-textures on Mac OS X bug is known, and believe me, created headaches for a lot of people since July 2008. Luckily, early reports indicate we may have fixed it once and for all.

The fix itself is not in SVN trunk just yet, so you're unfortunately restricted to using the manual build with my fix in it. In a couple of days the fix will be applied to SVN trunk assuming no problems are reported, [now in trunk as of revision 5028] and then all future builds should include the fix.
