Title: Freespace 2(HOTU) problem with custom missions
Post by: SuperSonic_ht on May 21, 2008, 11:25:27 am
Ok, this is my first post here. And as an introductory note, I would like to say that I am suprised that people here are still active, I was expecting the site to be dead.
Anyways, my problem is with the HOTU release of Freespace 2. I cant play any custom missions. I tried to make my own mission in FRED2, it did not work. Then I downloaded the Derelict campaigm just as a test, it didnt work too. Same problem with both:- "Freespace 2 CD not found. Please insert a Freespace 2 CD."

Is there anything I can do besides downloading the vp files?

Which vp files do you have?
Screenshot of your fs2 folder may help also. . .
:welcome: by the way.

Very strange, I could have sworn the crack included with HotU should allow you to play campaigns like Derelict.

The best advice I can give you is to simply go here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html) and download FS2_Open. If you only download the executables via that installer you should notice little difference from HotU (although you can grab working copies of the cutscenes too). However if you have a reasonably modern machine (anything from the last 3 years should be enough) grab the media VPs, etc. They'll hugely improve the game.

Thanks a lot, but just tell me what I need in order to play custom maps in the HoTU version? I downloaded the Derelict campaign just for testing whether the problem was with FRED2 or FS2. Am downloading FS2Open, I just hope this contains all I need...

Get the FreeSpace installer from the FreeSpace source code project forum and it will do it all for you. The mod.ini files will not work with retail (the hotu version)

The crack that comes with HotU should be allowing you to play it. If it's not I'm not certain what to advise. However FS2_Open itself is a tiny download. All you'd need is the executables, the launcher and OpenAL (which come to 4-5 meg). That is basically another way of playing the retail version of derelict.

Thanks a lot, it worked! Basically, I needed it only for FRED2. Now Ive got another problem...learning FRED2 (esp. SEXPs). So, expect more questions on FRED2..

I'm pretty sure I included the Freddocs when I compiled the HotU download so you should be able to simply click on the help menu to get to the extended walkthrough. That will teach you a very large amount of what you need to know. :)

Thats not the point, I mean, I have the FredDocs, but its gonna take some time for me to learn all those. Basically, Im starting a little project Ive been planning...a suprise level with some tricky stuff...
P.S.- Maybe we should close the discussion here? Im gonna make some new threads asking what I want to know.

What I meant is that you should do the walkthrough (if you haven't already) rather than reading it like some people do. It answers a lot of questions and you really get the hang of doing things if you actually work through it rather than reading.

SuperSonic, are you trying to combine FS2 and Halo?  IIRC, we have someone working on that, perhaps you should ask him if you can join with his project, if that is indeed the case.

Didn't work for me either. A custom campaign could be selected, but there was still an "Insert CD yaddayadda" thing if you tried to start the campaign. Yet another reason that drove me to FSO.

...that drove me to FSO.

Well, then it's not all bad, now, is it?  :D

Hell no. HotU FS2 was fun, even without the cutscenes. But stumbling upon FSO and discovering the MediaVPs, mods, campaigns, TCs... Like, damn.
