I've been searching through the boards to see if I'm not the only one running into this issue, but I think I am.
I've recently bought Decent: FreeSpace and Silent Threat today, and I can't seem to get it to install. I put it into the CD drive, it acts likes it's going to do it, and it even creates a Process for it in the Task Manager but then I get nothing. I've tried going into the CD and setting the Setup to run as a Windows 98 OS but still nothing, and if I try to run the process again it'll stack the running process. If this issue has already been addressed then please point me in the right direction.
Remember, it's Freespace 1 Retail CD's.

How long has XP been installed?
-
About 5 months now, had to reinstall due to a virus.
-
Try to install something else, to see if the problem is in your CD drive.
-
It's not, I had also bought a joystick today and got it to load up just before putting in the FreeSpace CD.
-
Dunno. The problem lies in either the OS or the CD.
-
Does it make a difference that it's a DVD-ROM? I haven't had an issue with it before loading up games, but could this be the issue?
-
No, that means that it can't write discs. You should be fine. I have no idea what your problem is. Try FSPort. Get it with the FreeSpace Open Installer, in my signature.
-
Have you tried opening the installer from windows explorer? it could just be your autorun.
-
He said that he assigned the .EXE as a Win98 file, so I assume he did that.
-
you can do that through the control panel though.
