Title: FreeSpace 1
Post by: Vattic on June 03, 2008, 12:41:21 pm
I have been playing fs2 and I realise that I am missing half the story really. I have noticed there is a board for mission re-creation but I wondered if there was a mod or a relatively easy way to play all the original missions, I want to know the story you see.

Oh and I am using the freespace source.

I hope this is the right place to post this.

Cheers.

Freespace port.
It should have a board here somewhere. :) it's the whole fs1 campaign. You may be able to get the sounds but i'm not sure.

Aroudn here we actually say FreeSpace_Open. Sorry, I'm nitpicking again.

But yes. FSPort. A "mod" for FS2/FSO that allows you to play the FS1 campaign. Can be downloaded with Turey's Installer or manually here (http://fsport.hard-light.net/).

Note that it's broken down into lots of bite-sized chunks. Most likely you'll want the core, missions, hi-res art, voice, and command brief animations. If you're using FS2 Open, you'll want the music, glow and shine maps too. You can actually download everything on the Main Downloads page (except the patches, of course) and be pretty safe.

You want to put everything in a new folder called 'fsport' then use the Select Mod... command on the launcher to pick it. It's also a good idea to make a new pilot for each mod. :)

*note to self: find an .exe installer...*

Run the installer in my signature. Check the FSPort box, and the MediaVPs are recommended. make sure that you select your FS2 folder.

IceyBrian  wasn't it IceyJones?
But regardless, yes, that is a good addition. Might want to get the FS1 ogg cutscenes from FSMods too.

Except that, apart from the entertainment value, you can't do much with it since it won't play in-game (unless he fixed it).

Read the first post. He says how to install it. It should play

But it doesn't. Sure, you can view it with practically any media player, and hot piss, it is pretty. But the encoding is not supported by the game engine and therefore it just won't play in-game.

At least it didn't a few months ago. I did try all sorts of tweaking and fiddling but no dice.

The campaign file would probably need editing to get it to play in-game and therefore would break retail compatability.

Modified campaign files were offered, but the problem seemed to be the fact that the sound has to be Vorbis and the video Theora in order to get the whole thing to play in-game. IceyJones had used some other encoding methods so that even though the file extension is .ogg, it still doesn't play.

If you want the whole entire fs1 experience as experienced from the fsport, then get turey's installer, run it, and download everything for fsport except for the user made campaigns (get the user campaigns later if you so desire). You're computer will probably be able to handle the high graphics requirements of the fso. So why skimp?
