Title: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: mr.WHO on September 25, 2008, 05:44:09 am
http://www.interplay.com/

To the right you can see "Coming soon to the DS" (or does ir refer only to legendary wars?), slighty to the bottom you can see "Freespace 2" with Eclipse cruiser, with inferno EA painting (I might be wrong but I think that stand alone, non-Inferno Eclipse has more Orion looking texture, am I right?).

WTF?

This is actually a really nice fs2 picture. Like you pointed out though, not an fs2 ship.

I think we need some other screens of the eclipse to compare too.

Hitting closer on the money here.

Oh yes i did hit t3h #0n3Y!

You're calling up interplay!!! But, maybe a little credit for them making a nice fs2 pic and even putting it on the front of the website?

The eclipse in interplays picture appears to have the same textures as the first eclipse i posted which has the redone EA textures.

That's the old version of the EAC Eclipse from Inferno R1. No doubt.

I don't know, there's something weird about the pic...it's a Shivan AAA beam killing the Eclipse...a Shivan AAA beam... :wtf:

They could have at least used a much bigger beam. I'm waiting for infR2 before i play it again (that knossos popping up out of nowhere with shivans coming out of it in a known system so close to some raid can space stations was an extremely random moment in the campaign for me).

hey.....

maybe interplay will assimilate inferno, and finish it be the first quarter of 2009...

but then we'd probably have to pay for it  :ick:

Ah, the Inferno Super Confusing Project. I hope that once finished and released, it will provide answers to all questions ever made. Regarding Inferno, that is.

Guess that their pocket has somewhat recovered?
Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: S-99 on September 26, 2008, 03:49:07 am
Judging by there website i can see that there pocket has recovered somewhat. But ****, anyone can make a website these days for little or no cost. Interplay kept their domain name, and maybe they still have some important staff?

Anyway, seeing fs2 on the website and the way they're selling game IP's or rights or whatever suggests perhaps some wierd kind of a ****ed up future for fs. Or maybe that they have some ideas with it in mind. The people who made that image certainly stopped by here to grab it. Either way, it's pretty obvious the fs community is still quite a bustling in the least.

When interplays forum is up. Some of us should go over there to sign up for it and ask some questions (and tell them the no-no that they did especially).

Come on, no one wants Inferno to be canon, not even the devs.

I like Inferno because it's the point of view of a group of fans. The other Post-Capella mods deserve respect as well. Why wouldn't INF become canon and the other mods such as BWO or Twisted Infinities not?
Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: Snail on September 26, 2008, 04:10:14 pm
I think this means that Interplay looked up "FS2" on Google so that they could use a picture in their logo. They found an INFSCP screenshot and thought it was canon, and used it. Same situation as system requirements.

A shine map on a beam?

Whose bright idea was that?

BTW- I'm a little surprized it's FS 2 and not FS 3, with a ship made waaay later than the Second Shivan Incursion.

An FS3 that isn't Made in :v: will be easily and rapidly forgotten by the community unless it has superb features and high mod compatability.

Crash Bandicoot fell in the hands of Konami - I remember the games made by Naughty Dog, only.

Canon crap is one of the things that can ruin an entire universe for me.

Take Star Wars for example (just an example mind you), the movies were pretty good, maybe not the best sci-fi universe, but still. Then, obviously, you get the EU which ruins everything. (Let's leave it at that, no more Star Wars discussion. I only brought it up as an example, nothing more).

If FS3 is something crap, it's still canon. That way we have stuff that is canon that is crap. This is like piling up bile on top of a cake, you can choose to ignore it but it's still utterly disgusting.

An FS3 I'm sure will change everything, for better or for worse. There's no discussion that everything here will be completely different a year or so after FS3 is released.
Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: Mobius on September 28, 2008, 04:13:32 am
No if the community realizes that FS3 is crap. In the various discussions there will be comments like "It's canon, ok, but it comes from FS3. This is self-explanatory". Even the FS Wiki would, IMO, make the difference between FS1&2 canon and FS3 canon.
Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: Snail on September 28, 2008, 04:31:32 am
But there are bound to be people who think that FS3 is canon just "because it's an official addition". Some are bound to be people in positions of power.
Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: ShadowGorrath on September 28, 2008, 05:05:26 am
Let's take a look at Command and Conquer. Original games were great. Then Generals, Tiberium Wars and etc. came. While a lot of people were against them at first, the original CnC community slowly dissapeared, when they got conquered by new fans of the new games.
Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: terran_emperor on September 28, 2008, 05:08:18 am
Well, it depends on how heavily F3S-in-the-incorrect-order contradicts the other 2 games...

I mean Terminator 3 would be considered canon as it is an official addition to the series.

BUT, T3 is choc full of contradictions to the earliar films so i consider it canon to an AU timeline where the events of the first two films took place earliar...

SO, depending on how good FS3 is in terms of story and how well it maintains continuity with the others, i would either call it 100% canon or AU-Canon

Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: ShadowGorrath on September 28, 2008, 05:18:06 am
There were inconsistencies between FS1 and FS2

And unless Interplay or something call FS2 SCP illegal, then I guess that it won't. Afterall, it's just FS2 that's open source. FS1 isn't. So I guess a FS3 would be independent from the SCP as well.

Unless FS 3 will have real Newtonian physics, allowing me to orbit around the ship I'm attacking while facing it all the time, will be even easier to mod than the SCP, and will have graphics that Crysis could never dream about.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot- and if it includes every ship, mission and campaign from FS 1 to FS 3 (;-p) in such quality, everyone here will $h!t bricks when seeing them and a good (almost addicting) multiplayer...
and all that without excessive system requirements.

If not, then:

It's just that without :v: it will be a very sad FS3.
But :v: really isn't :v: anymore to begin with, at least in terms of personnel.  From every quote I've ever heard from them, it's pretty clear that there was never any fleshed-out idea for what FS3 would consist of, other than a few general suggestions like "planet-sized ships" and "bigger problem."  There was no FS3 design document, no fleshed-out plot, no completed script.  Unless you somehow get the exact same writers and concept artists from the first two games back together and set them to work, it won't really be the same game even if :v: does make it.

Now, do I think that some other developer would necessarily be able to recapture the same atmosphere that :v: brought to the first two games so excellently?  Not at all.  But there's also nothing saying that they wouldn't be able to.  Either way, such speculation is generally useless, since the space sim is all-but-dead in today's market.

It's bad enough that people post meaningless posts in the first place with nothing but smilies or "QFT", but at least it takes up the amount of space that it takes up. With Avatars someone's crap post can take up half a page just because they have some huge signature and some massive avatar. Effective immediately, we must ask that anyone with more than two of the userbars in their signature must reduce down to two userbars only. They must be left justified and one over the other. These banners are 350 pixels wide, so two of them next to each other breaks our posted signature size of 600 pixels max width. Also, with the 2 sig banners, you can have up to 6 lines of font 10 text. A spacer between lines of text counts as a line. See my signature for an example. If you have any graphics larger than the 350x40 of two of these user banners, you may only have 1 graphic in your signature and no lines of text.

With Avatars someone's crap post can take up half a page just because they have some huge signature and some massive avatar.

That is why you set limitations. And whip out the banhammer on dumbasses that break them...
Well, if it does somehow eat bandwidth more than just text, even though its hosted on some other site, then fine. Whatever.

The thing is, I like signatures to have no pictures. At the worst, just use ASCII art.

Seems like it takes more moderation than it's worth... and it still negatively impacts the content-to-crap ratio of the boards.

Here's the good news/bad news...

Good News: IF someone comes along for interplay and knows what they are doing then FS* 'could' be good (though won't make everyone happy)

Bad News: "It's crap! Worse, it's canon now!"

Well we can always do what TOS BSG fans did when Gal-80 came out (basically the network stepped in, slashed the budget to like 10% and filmed in all on "Earth" locations with piss poor imbecilic scripts that killed the franchise.)...

THEY IGNORED IT, "THERE IS NO Galactica-80 SERIES!!! It never existed!"

It's the only way to keep your sanity. The Mod community will do as it wills and that's our right. If we try a demo and don't like it or word of mouth spreads negatively, it's not  they can MAKE us buy it...

Whoever thinks of tackling FS* better think long and hard about the whole project if they want to make a resurgence of the genre... The fan base IS there, but they are libel to alienate them as much as garner their support...

Incidentally, how does Snail shoot himself in the head?

Is his Avatar like Assey Magee or Bob Oblong and he can manipulate objects like they do (magic/TK)?
And no one around them comments on it as out of the ordinary? :)

How accurate do you guys think this image is to FreeSpace 2? I seem to see a few instances of duplicated ships.

It's part of the FS2 box art, so that would be either a Ravana facing right, or a Moloch facing left. Seeing the relative sizes and distances of the crafts, I'd say the former is more plausible option.

I'm not sure but it's a Ravana. I think I saw the same pic before with the name "FreeSpace 2" either missing or placed elsewhere...I can't prove it, through...

The bit of the thing shown skewering the Orion looks quite bulky and big. Either its a Moloch or a Demon.
It makes more sense for the Demon though - it usually shoots one LRed at a time, while the Ravana fires two.

I didn't read Herra's post...looks like he came to my conclusion. That ship is very likely to be a Ravana. Another important factor is the beam cannon, which surely isn't an SRed mounted on Moloch corvettes.
Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: Snail on October 31, 2008, 04:54:15 pm
The big one skewering the Deimos doesn't look like an SRed though.
Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: Mobius on October 31, 2008, 04:56:35 pm
The one penetrating the Orion is surely bigger, though...it must be an LRed. The Moloch beam might be an SRed concept(it looks different) and the beam turret is misplaced, too.

Actually I thought it was FractalSponge's, unless that's an alt nick he uses.  But yeah, it's the closest thing I know of to a company taking fan work, not an original concept, but still the hard work of a fan and he ended up getting no credit in the end for it.  Wasn't even a model they used in the game I don't think.
Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: StarSlayer on November 02, 2008, 09:08:15 pm
Your right it was Fractal Sponge.  He's built quite a bit of fantastic Imperial equipment (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips/2212-star-wars-projects-thread.html) , I got him mixed with AdrigK who made a nice Pegasus a while back.  As for ingame unless they used it for the accompaning cutscene the game model certainly wasn't.  Of course having an Imperator Star Destroyer in atmo retcons canon, only Victories were supposed to do that :P
Title: Re: Interplay website, FS2, Inferno WTF ??
Post by: karajorma on November 03, 2008, 02:18:28 am
Well I can see why LucasArts might think they don't need permission in order to use a SW model but to not give credit afterwards is rather rude.

Original concept? I can give you that:
     http://ravensbranch.allen.com/colonialshipdescriptions.html (http://ravensbranch.allen.com/colonialshipdescriptions.html)

Scroll down to the "Defender" to see what I mean. BSG crew took this guy's drawing and put it right into the TV show. And he didn't get credit as far as I know. Though he didn't seem to mind. More flattered than anything. I think the ship also made an appearance in Serenity by virtue of both productions drawing from the same CG studio.

Well regardless of everyones *****ing that ill receive here, i will (and have) bug interplay on their forums about the future of the freespace licence, and yes, about freespace 3. Not a better time then now to finally get in contact with them.

Save your flames for the newbies. Im not the only one that hasent given up hope, 10 years later. Wont be the last.

But regardless, interplays deal with GOG is a good moove, and great pirces too. Tho they have odd wording, and crappy descriptions 'fight for mankinds survival' etc.

Interplays new site, with freespace 2 being promoted on their home page, is a good sign. It could mean something but i wont read into it.
Congrats to Inferno, or nowadays "INF SCP" i believe???, for the moding of that pritty ship they have on their homepage. Too bad you wernt credited. But its a good thing one of them got it from us.

If anyone cares to read, i posted a topic in the "Other Classic Games" section of the forums, under the username Ephili.

Same as it ever was, one would imagine, except that GOG obtained a license from Interplay to sell the game, just as GameTap obtained one to include it as part of their service.

Also, people responding "ZOMG FS3 is taboo!!1!1" are far more annoying than people broaching the subject in the first place, so let's give it a rest.

I don't care if someone starts a FS3 thread as such, but what I have to do, as a moderator, is not judge threads by their content, but by the anticipated reaction it will create. That's why, until there's more than guesses, hopes and imaginings of what people would like to see, there's no point discussing it.

Part of the problem is the fact it's been done to death many years ago.... 'Bigger ships, Bombier Bombs, Laserier Lasers!', we all know what we would have liked to have seen, it's like if someone said 'I've got a great idea! And smaller Alpha 1.

With epically epic storyline and storytelling to keep the balance in the Universe.

Then we can talk about FS3.
