Title: Random question... CTF in fs2?

Would it be possible? I'd guess heavy scripting/sexping would be needed, but i think it would be quite entertaining if done right

Yes it is possible.  Wasn't really with retail but even then some people came close.  With the new sexp's and bugfixes is  shouldn't be a problem.

Tried freding one a while back, never got it to work. If someone wants to make a template mission, I could see quite a few of these being made

I tried to make something fun and multiplayer but failed.

Still, would be neat. Somebody skilled go do it.

CTF in space games can be fun... but it only works if you can get past the empty space. Empty space makes for a really boring CTF playground, so you'll need to fill in a lot of big capships and/or stations to make it interesting.

All of these posts are "We've tried it" and "It can be done" posts but offer no explanation on how. I'd imagine something like Pharos boueys would be the flag and bearing the flag would change your target indicaton to say, white like an active asteroid?

That would be a pretty good to seal off all the open space around the flag, it wouldn't make much sense to have it floating in open space.

The Hyperion / Karuna would make a great example of hosting a flag point, its fighterbay is fairly large and has a tunnel unlike other hangared ships, or the Karnak if two of the three door subsystems were made indestructable.
