Title: Any hope for FS3, considering the buzz of activity on FS2 on InterPlay??
Post by: IronForge on October 20, 2008, 08:45:48 am
There. Someone had to ask. Seeing Im fairly new around here and still grappeling with the basics of the FREDDER before i gave up in fustration, I was waiting for someone else to make this post.

Now yeah. I know theres a ton of FS3 threads, and believe me I think I read most of them.
But I think now theres a reason for hope!!!!  :D

With the recent activity on the Interplay site, patricularly about FS2 and the Inferno mod screenie coming up on the front page, I'm thinking... could there be a FS3 in my lifetime?

Well yeah constructive posts appreciated.
Also, who was the guy whos holding the trademark for FS3 and when does his patent expire so interplay can use it if they want to?

I'd be careful about mentioning this subject round these parts. You're liable to get beaten to death with a crowbar by some of the more rabid fanboys, where upon your remains will be fed to Carl, our resident Shivan. And the less said about that Derek Smart Fiasco the better...even i've just said too much about it.

F3S, in the (in)correct order, doesn't exist as an actual game. I doubt it ever will and even if it does, then like the final duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith, it won't live up to the expectations of the fans.

best one can hope for is a space sim of similar scale, after all, since Freespace 2, no other space sim has made you feel so insignificant next to a capital ship.. Take Freelancer for example, i'm betting a Fenris class would give a Liberty battleship a run for its money.  :p

I loved that duel myself...

BUT, the duel had an enormous reputation long before it was ever shown on screen, so it was quite frankly impossible for the duel to live up to it.

Basically, The duel was fantastic but not quite as ? as how i imagined imagined it. Hell thay even cut out my favourite moment from it.
In a behind the scenes feturette they showed this bit that i couldn't find in the finished duel.
Basically Obi-Wan and Anakin are grappling, each holding the other's lightsabre arm. Then Anakin backfists Obi-wan across the face. Obi-wan recoils from the blow then responds by backhanding Anakin across the face.

Also the guy above me just made another good point

I wouldnt play fs3 for the graphics, I would just be glad to see where the story is going ^^

then we can all argue who had the closest idea about the topic of fs3 so extensively trated.

This seems to have veered off-topic rapidly.  In short, IronForge, any addition to the FS series is an extremely remote possibility.  FS2 was somewhat of a flop as far as sales were concerned, and the entire space sim genre has been all but comatose over the past few years.  Even if any sequel were to be made, it wouldn't be developed by Volition, who are now owned by THQ; this would almost entirely discredit it in many community members' eyes right from the get-go.  Interplay's revival or not, I don't think there's any rational chance that we'd ever see a new game.

And since I don't see this going anywhere but down from here on out, locked.

No guy holds the trademark. Interplay do.

As for copywrite on the game that is shared between Interplay and Volition with :v:  holding the majority of it. As for when it expires even the most favourable reading of the Berne Convention says that you'll have to wait until 2049. :p
