Title: Pimping out the finished mods
Post by: Odd Writings on October 23, 2008, 07:00:18 am
I have been wondering about that. Is it possible to do so? (Yes, I know it is. Silly, true but please, keep reading before aiming Carl at me. Again.)

The way of showing the general populace of FSO and what this community has reached in the time they have had the source code in hands is something of a slight problem; we can't show off mods without having people buy FS2 retail first.

...

are there any ways that the Total Conversions at least can be played without the original discs/GoG download?

I am itching with the urge to toss out links about the Babylon Project, Blue Planet, JAD, DEM and all the rest of the campaigns to gaming magazines and online communities. The world should know what we have done and live these tales.

SO! How can we pimp out the works of the Community without forcefeeding people the FS2 Retail discs?

The only TC out, afaik, is TBP. And its stand alone, afaik.

Well really Total Conversion means a standalone mod, but generally I believe in the FS2 community it means a different universe in FS2.

hm... Now this gives me a good reason to abduct the computer of a friend and see if it'll run TBP without a FreeSpace install.

After work hours, though. Even though I _know_ I just heard the sound of a beam cannon being fired from the chief's office.

Gods, it feels good to have infected my work area with FreeSpace.

'nyhow, I do hope that it'll work without the FS2 discs. means I can get cracking on writing an article and show it off to the TBP crew for approval and then send it off to the world.

The only complete one. WCS:Prologue and the BtRL demo are also standalone.

FSO and BtRL have already been featured in a few gaming magazines already IIRC, there are some slightly old threads in this forum about that. I could be wrong but I think I remember one giving the mediavps and a few mods away on a cover CD or something.

That said, I wonder how people get to know about FSO, HLP and the source code etc these days, be it by googling about FS, through friends, reading mags or whatever. I wonder how many times FSO and the total conversions have been DL'd so far too.

I don't know about you, but I tend to not shut up about FS2:SCP around my friends. Wouldn't be surprised if a few of them have started playing.

I know I have been forcefeeding the Good Old Games link to people in chatrooms, so...ya. Not to mention telling them about the great moments one can experience in the game and with the game.

*quietly sticks his head in a beam cannon for thinking about the impossible*

Just Another Day 4 :nervous:

I hardly play anything else these days bar FSO, IL2 and occasionally some other flight sims or RTSs. If I had any friends that play computer games they'd probably be FPS junkies and look at me like this  :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

I think Diaspora and BtRL have some potential to draw in more people towards FSO and what the community does once they are fully released. Given that they're based off a popular TV series, fans looking for a related game could end up passing HLP and other FS modding sites in turn.

Babylon Project is definitely standalone.

This is not a new community and is not obscure to say the least.

The HW1/2, and many various Trek communities know about FSO as well as sci-fimeshes, CGtalk, Spacebattles.com, and a slew of other forums I frequent and advertise the latest and greatest FSO has to offer when mods become available (like when Re-voiced Derelict came out) and what not since around 2004.

Before that I stuck to learning the very basics and kept relatively to myself.

The Wing Commander community, Tie fighter franchises,  as well as Freelancers are aware of us.

Sad that the only two *complete* conversion are demos...

If TBP with it's 130+ ships is a demo I can't imagine what you expect the complete version to be like. :p

I keep hearing that TPB isn't still complete yet or something crazy.

Well, it isn't "complete" in the way that new and improved models keep popping up, new campaigns are made and so on. But there is a "final" release available, which will allow a player to run TBP and even play a couple of campaigns straight away.

The main release for TBP is out. TBP is now in the same sort of situation that FS2 was back in 1999-2000, the game is done and very playable but FREDders and modders are realising that they have a great platform to make new stories. The big difference is that the official team are also writing campaigns and missions too. :)

Whatever happened to BHX?

IP put it on hold to do some other stuff and he was finding things too unwieldy due to the massive number of variables required to get it to work.

That said stuff like arguments within arguments now give him the possibility of doing the virtual function calls he wanted so maybe he'll pick it up again once he's done working on multiplayer.
