Title: technical help required installing FSport
Post by: 23-down on February 13, 2009, 07:00:35 am
Hi people..

I hope this is the right place to post it because i saw no support forum special for your Restoration project only for Freespace open.

I shame myself a little to post questions like this but can someone help me please.. It seems i'm not smart enough to get your mod running. I'm sure those questions has been asked many many times. So sorry for the 100 thread about this.  :p

Please note that i have absolutely no modding experiences in Freespace!  :sigh:

Ok lets get started:

Yesterday i reinstalled Freespace 2 (Fresh install patched to 1.2) . I heard of this massive community project "Freespace Open" which increases the game engine etc.

So i installed it. Version 3.6.9. Freespace 2 is running fine with the launcher and the new graphics.

But how do i install your mod? I looked in some tutorials here and in many threads but i still don't get it. Maybe i'm missing files or installed them in the wrong directory because the tutorials were all little different and not focused on your mod.

http://www.sectorgame.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3691
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html

I did the following things so far:

Quote
I downloaded: Mv_Complete , Fsport3_1, Fsport Missions, Fsport-str , sparky_hi_fs1 , stu_fs1 , tango_fs1 , warble_fs1 , mv_music,  mv_strings-lcl , fsport-mediavps & Freespace Open of course i installed it.

I created following folders:

Quote
Freespace2\Fsport\ in there are following files:  fsport.bmp , fsport3_1.vp , fsport-missions.vp , mod.ini , sparky_hi_fs1.vp ,  stu_fs1.vp , tango_fs1.vp , warble_fs1.vp

Then i also have Freespace2\Fsport\Data\movies Data folder is empty and in movies i have all the cinematics from Freespace 1 & 2.

Am i missing something?

I would be very grateful if someone could explain me everything step by step. Please note also that my english isn't that good. Or are there tutorials i haven't seen yet which explaines everything from installing freespace 2 then installing freespace open till installing Fsport & mods?

Some more things: If i try to start with the launcher and select Fsport as mod then i get following error message:
Quote
Invalid mod ini multiple mod parameter, only -mod calls are allowed

Here's the mod.ini i changed nothing in it.

Quote
[launcher]
modname      = FSPort v3.1;
image255x112 = fsport.bmp;
infotext     = A fourteen-year war between the Terran and Vasudan species leads into something far more sinister.  This is the story of the Great War.;
website      = http://fsport.hard-light.net/;
forum        = http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,39.0.html;

[multimod]
primarylist  = fsport-mediavps;
secondarylist = mediavps;

I also had no install parameters available with the Exe install file of Freespace open. I coudn't deselect or select things like Binary code for Linux or Mac. So in the end it downloaded those codes as well as the windows codes. Strange thing. During the installation I also encountered that a special VP isn't available anymore it found no download link for that file unfortunately i forgot the file name.

I really hope someone of you can help me getting the game started. I want to play Freespace 1 in Fs2 engine.

Here are some informations:

Win Vista 32bit
I own Freespace 1, Addon & Freespace 2.
I have for all those games the german version i read there might be issues with non english versions?

Greetings 23-down

FSPort installation has been described quite thoroughly in the FSPort 3.1.1 release thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58357.0.html). But in a nutshell:

- If you have mv_fsport.vp, put it to \freespace2\fsport-mediavps\ .
- Put other FSPort files to \freespace2\fsport\ .
- Put the 3.6.10 MediaVPs to \freespace2\mediavps\ .
- Make sure that there is a mod.ini file in \freespace2\fsport-mediavps\ with the following text:
Code: [Select]
[launcher]
modname      = FSPort MediaVPs v3.1;
image255x112 = fsport-mediavps.bmp;
infotext     = Freespace Port Media VPs.  Requires FSPort 3.1.1 and standard Media VPs 3.6.10.;
website      = http://fsport.hard-light.net/;
forum        = http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,170.0.html;

[multimod]
secondarylist = fsport,mediavps
- Download the latest nightly build from the Nightly Builds board (link in my signature) and use it instead of 3.6.9. Pick the one that starts with "fs2_open_3_6_10r".
- Select the \fsport-mediavps\ folder as your active mod from the Launcher and Apply the changes.
- Start the game, go to the Campaign Room and select the correct campaign (the main FS2 campaign is selected by default).
- Play.

Well for user-made campaigns, to be safe, create a new folder, place the files in their correct places, and run as a different mod

USING A DIFFERENT PILOT

Cannot stress to you how important that is, it will save a lot of whining on tech support about weapons not showing up etc. Use the clone button to save your control layouts for different pilots.

If we take the broader meaning of the word "mod", campaigns are mods as well. Installing them follows the same principals. Installing mods is also explained in Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/installingmods.html). A few things that are good to keep in mind:

- Never put any non-retail .vp files directly to \freespace2\ : always create subfolders for mods (like \freespace2\fsport\ for FSPort in this case).
- Never put anything in \freespace2\data\ .
- If a mod requires components of another mod, don't just stick them to one folder. Use mod.ini files (as explained in Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ), or alternatively use the -mod command-line parameter manually.
- Create separate pilot files for each mod (thanks, Dilmah. Almost forgot that one).

I thank you both guys.. It's a fantastic support here...  :)

I will keep this in mind but first i have to play FS1 (FSport) through before i will install custom campaigns (mods).

I have 1 more question: stu_fs1.vp is responsible for the spoken language in Fsport. But i want my lanuage in german.

So i installed the original Freespace 1 but stu_fs1.vp isn't there nor in the gamefolder or on the cd.

Any way to get this file? Is it maybe in Freespace.vp if yes what tools can you recommend to unpack the file?

EDIT:

I've downloaded this tool to open and modify the vp file:

<a href="http://www.descent-network.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi?file=/descman/modules/vpview.w32/vpvw20b5.exe&desc=Descent_Manager_VPVIEW32_V2.0_Beta_for_Windows_95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP&size=641" target="_blank">Descent Manager VPVIEW32[/url]

Both CD's + the ingame folder are how ever empty. They have the folders for Briefing, Debriefing etc... But they are all empty except the 2 folders special and training.

What's going on? Where are the briefing files located. I know that the rest is empty but i know that Fs1 has Briefing or Command Briefing audio files in the main game. Are they located somwhere else? I checked all vp files i can't find em.

Greetings 23-down.

  :wtf: Well, he could put the mve files from the FS2 cd's into a movie folder in the data folder? Just to save having to have the cd's in the drive to play the movies.

In terms of mod installation: never put anything to \freespace2\data\. Retail cutscenes are acceptable. As well as the cutscenepack placed to \freespace2\.

So i installed the original Freespace 1 but stu_fs1.vp isn't there nor in the gamefolder or on the cd.
Since I don't own FS1, I can't say much about its file arrangement, but if there are .vp files, all voices are located in \.vp\data\voice , under separate subfolders. \voice\special has in-mission lines, \voice\briefing has briefing lines and so on.

I suppose it might be possible to achieve your goals like this: if/when you find the voice files from the FS1 .vp files, extract them with VPView. Then, create the directory \freespace2\fsport\data\voice and under it create the four subfolders special, debriefing, briefing and command_briefings. Then, place the audio files to those folders the same way they were in the .vp files. This will make the game engine use those audio files instead of the ones in the FSPort .vp files.

Assuming that the original FS1 audio files have the same names as the ones in FSPort. If not... **** happens.

If you run the retail launcher, I think there might be an option to choose the language in there somewhere, (IIRC)

right now i'm very confused....

Thanks for the info with the Videos i did that allready the only remaining problem is the vasudan toast video i don't know how to get it running because i don't have a freespace.fc2 file.

I've found the audio files how ever...

On CD2 there were the folders special & Training with my german sounds.

On CD1 however are only english briefing files i don't get it. Because ingame in Fs1 all the sounds for the briefings + texts are in german...

As side from that i searched all the cd's no trace of the german counterparts to the english sounds.

Any clues?

I really can't help you with the German translation, since nobody on the FSPort team has a foreign-language version of the game. We didn't design it to be localized, sorry.

If you want to play FSPort in German... you'll just have to play FS1 in German.

Hi people

Thanks for the link Mecfie..  :D

@Galemp: Yep it's ok.. I'm a fool. I mistook it all time long with Freespace 2.. In the german version Freespace 1 had no Briefing sounds. Example i thought all the time on the sound where your commander welcomes you in the 53th Hammerheads but that's Fs2.  :shaking: :rolleyes: ;)

Still it would be interesting. Maybe you can check on that in the future if it's possible to add Text support for multiple languages.. Imagine it could bring some new fans to the game. There are people out there that don't speak or read english at all. It sounds unbelievable but it is so.

Ok so much from me thanks again for the good support @all.
