Title: Input delay
Post by: zapwow on October 23, 2009, 08:05:13 pm
Hi all,
There is a very noticeable delay between my input actions and the response on the screen in both FS2 and FS2open... that is, almost a half second between the time i press a button and see the reaction on-screen. This is killing my reaction time and makes it very difficult to play. Has anyone else noticed this, or managed to resolve it? It applies to all input: keyboard, mouse, joystick.
I'm running a P4 3.0GHz, 2gb ram, ati x1650pro, saitek x52 joystick. It applies the same to low and high detail settings.
Thanks!

That's definitely not normal at all. Can we get a debug log? What's your FPS running at?

To clarify: A debug log is generated by running a debug build (fs2_open_3_6_10d.exe, for example). You can then find it in <FS2 dir>\data. It will be called fs2_open.log; just post that file here.

Here's a debug log: http://pastebin.com/m69bd2aa8 (http://pastebin.com/m69bd2aa8)

FPS are consistently high (50+). I think I had the media VPs turned on for this, but the effect is present without them as well.

Which controls does this affect?

It's that one Radeon card series again...

Never saw that error before.....

Does this happen with the latest nightly (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=66081.0) as well?

I have seen that (input delay thing).. It was happening when i was testing something in Blue Planet mod but for me it happened only (if consistently) when using that specific mod and only for joystick - essentially made joystick totally useless in game. I thought it was just freak occurrence and didn't really pursue it any further. Something funny in directcrash when system resources are heavily taxed?

That would be my guess. Although I have trouble imagining a situation where input handling, and ONLY input handling gets overloaded like that.

Input delay can also be caused by poor LCD monitors.
I have a rather expensive one but selected it on color display, not on speed. Placed next to my old CRT screen for comparison, there is a noticable input delay on the LCD.

I think we're dealing with a different issue here. Current LCDs do not have switching times that long.

Hi all, thanks for the replies.

As at least a couple of you suspected, my x1650 is apparently responsible. I've noticed quite a few quirks related to this card since I got it last year. I looked through the debug logs and noticed that GLSL was no longer compiling when I ran FS2open, so I tried downloading the atioglxx.dll file recommended in the troubleshooting FAQ.

Immediately, all the bells and whistles of FS2open worked beautifully and the input delay essentially disappeared. It's still barely noticeable when using the keyboard controls, but it's so small that it may well be either my imagination or the normal game mechanics.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I'm off to hunt some shivans!

(who am I kidding... they're the ones hunting me...)

We're glad to hear everything's working.

:welcome:
