Title: Please some help: Ubuntu + yal
Post by: camaris on October 25, 2009, 03:25:41 am
Hi everybody,

I am new both to the game and also to Ubuntu (linux in general two weeks experience). I've been trying quite hard to get the game running on ubuntu 9.04. I have gone through several ways to get it running.

http://elsoftwarelibre.wordpress.com/2009/08/10/como-instalar-freespace-2-open/ (http://elsoftwarelibre.wordpress.com/2009/08/10/como-instalar-freespace-2-open/)

went through the wiki for linux, but it is just too strange.

Read finally the post from Jeff Vader

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=60842.msg1199551#msg1199551 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=60842.msg1199551#msg1199551).

Installed as it is explained inside.

Extracted the files from fs2_open_3_6_10_INF.tar.bz2 into the freespace2 folder

Set up the yal-0.1.4, bin folder ok, launcher moved to freespace2 folder

As well the mediavps

I am at the latter part of the launcher.

I have selected the fs2_open_3_6_10_INF file as the executable file, features, selected mod.
Apply and then run and nothing happens. I guess some kind of error log file must be built somewhere, but no idea where.

Can someone explain me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance

Could you tell us where exactly you had problems? Personally, I followed the instructions on the Wiki, and never had a problem getting it to run.

Basically,
I set up the launcher following the instructions from Jeff Vader's post

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=60842.0 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=60842.0)

Apply changes in launcher and then click "RUN" and nothing happens.

No, I meant, where did you have problems following the instructions on the wiki?
And did you follow the additional instructions for Ubuntu 64 users?

Frankly speaking I got lost everywhere since I lack the experience in linux in general.
No I did not followed the extra instructions for Ubuntu 64 users, I do not have that in my computer (that I know from my previous winXp times).
The way I am installing and running the yal launcher, does it make any error log where i can track them?

Linux might surprise you there. Unless you have specifically chosen to install the 32-bit version, it'll install the 64 bit one. Do those steps, then try again.

I have tried what you said:
This is what appears, it appears to me that I already had that lib.

Quote
emilio@emilio-desktop:~$ sudo getlibs -l libtheora.so.0
[sudo] password for emilio:
libtheora.so.0: libtheora0
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
libtheora0 is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  deluge-core python-libtorrent libboost-python1.37.0
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Then launcher, click RUN, but nothing happens, no error messages, plain nothing.

This is what I have done:
Installed game from CDS with wine
Copied to home folder

copied linux executable files from Regular linux in folder (I tried as well with the inferno ones)

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,64520.0.html (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,64520.0.html)

Downloaded mediavps, put files in mediavps folder

Downloaded yal launcher, followed instructions, created fs2launcher and moved to freespace2 folder
Open launcher, selected executable: fs2_open_3_6_10, selected mod mediavps, changed features, gameplay and the rest you know.
So far nothing happens when I click run in launcher to start the game
Any suggestions?

What happens if you double-click on the fs2_open_3_6_10 executable? Or the debug version?

Nothing at all (on both files). As well with the inferno build.

Can you check ~/.fs2_open for a log file? To get there, open your home folder, press CTRL-H to show hidden items, and go to that folder.

Yep, that's the error. The game is looking for a config file telling it which resolution to use.
In ~/.fs2_open, create a new text file. Name it fs2_open.ini.
In it, paste the following lines:
Code: [Select]
[Default]
VideocardFs2open=OGL -(1024x768)x32 bit

You can change the 1024x768 bit to whatever resolution you want, of course.

Code: [Select]
Found root pack '/home/emilio/FreeSpace2/mediavps/MV_Advanced.vp' with a checksum of 0xd06bf123
Found root pack '/home/emilio/FreeSpace2/mediavps/MV_Assets.vp' with a checksum of 0xc9e372bb
Found root pack '/home/emilio/FreeSpace2/mediavps/MV_Core.vp' with a checksum of 0x0dc7bb8f
Found root pack '/home/emilio/FreeSpace2/mediavps/MV_Effects.vp' with a checksum of 0xa3141c30
Found root pack '/home/emilio/FreeSpace2/mediavps/MV_Music.vp' with a checksum of 0x4dbbbe96

It would be a very good idea to download and install the patch for the mediavps as well. Get it here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=65038.msg1288578#msg1288578), and put the vp in the same directory as the other mediavps files.

Thanks a lot for your help.

That was it!.

Could you edit the post from Jeff Vader

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=60842.0 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=60842.0)

and insert that part?

Thanks again!
