Title: The Siskels and Eberts of FSO?
Post by: Lucika on November 11, 2009, 06:42:53 pm
I just watched some of the old "At the movies" reviews.
I quote somebody: "Two bright, funny men who
obviously liked movies and each other, even if they argued a lot- but that's
what made it great. An intelligent, well-informed debate is always as fun to
watch as a great movie, and Siskel and Ebert made it an art form" and I totally agree with him. And I've got an idea.
What if two experienced Freespace-players would do some sort of a radio show criticising some of the more famous player-made campaigns? I'm sure that they'd be able to excavate a lot of background information that is unknown for us and that most of us would love listening to experienced players arguing about the FREDding, the overally storyline and everything else.

Mobius and Snail

lol...
And here's an example why some of us wouldn't love listening to "experienced players arguing about the FREDding, the overally [sic] storyline and everything else".

I'm more of an Evil Joel Robinson than an Ebert, but I'm honored.

Well, I'm grumpy enough and snobby enough to be a critic. :doubt:

Get BlackDove or QuantumDelta. Both are experienced, and the latter's British.

Since when is britishness a required criteria for criticism? :wtf:

Hmms...... I did wanna try a podcast thing some day, I honestly have no idea if I'd be any good at that kinda thing or not though ;p
Probably not considering how hesitant I tend to be in speech sometimes.
Most peeps who've heard me on voice comms say I have one of 'those' voices though >.>

But this isn't a speech, it is a discussion. :)

Well, just figure that with a tiny bit of scripting I probably could pull it off, dunno 'bout BD though he doesn't use voice comms much. :P

Yes, but I don't trust either of you to be terribly erudite about the storytelling or FREDding. :P

Karaj maybe, but we'd never talk him into it. There aren't terribly many people in the community who do both.

Considering my reading age has been double or triple my chronological age for the majority of my life, I'm probably more well-read than yourself :P

Considering my reading age has been double or triple my chronological age for the majority of my life, I'm probably more well-read than yourself :P

And yet you still don't come across as able to do the job. :P

Besides, you're not, since I'm pretty sure that's identical or less than mine. :P

I'm fairly sure "reading age" stops meaning anything beyond the age of 9 or 10. Actually, bragging about your "reading age" is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on here. I mean, you reckon your "reading age" was quadruple your actual age for your entire life? So you're reading geriatric books now? Just get through "Preparing for Death" or something? Or even when you were a kid - when you were ten were you reading "How to win friends and Influence people" or books about coping with a mid life crisis?

Seriously, get a better brag.

[EDIT]On the original topic,  never saw Siskel and Ebert, but I did see the Nostalgia Critic video - I dunno if the format'd work as well for campaigns as it does for movies, but I do agree that you'd need at least one FREDder in the pair, and someone funny. No suggestions though.

Darius and Ransom. They have very different styles and they're both polite and thoughtful.

Mm, I guess I'd have to half agree here. Egotistical types tend to do better in these kind of roles, or well, they make for more interesting viewing. Actually, if you could get Darius and Ransom in the same room it could be interesting, but you'd have to toss someone 'ragey' or Blackdove-ish in there as well, just to give spice things up.

No intention of nitpicking, but I can't say that Siskel/Ebert/Roeper were egoistic. They only need a different approach if you ask me,

Nah. He's too busy having a life in China. :blah:

If you need one FREDder, how about Axem? :nervous:

Five minutes, with the topic being the original FS1 for starters. FREDding should be nitpicked to shreds ;)
