Title: Screenshots! Screenshots!
Post by: Black Wolf on January 15, 2010, 11:01:32 am
You may have noticed the main page has a new little feature - a screenshots box showing two glorious FS2 Open screenshots. These two pictures are randomly chosen every time you refresh the main page, so people coming to the wiki get a fresh taste of the good work being done by the coders and the mediavp people. Unfortunately, they're currently being chosen from a gallery of seven pictures which I quickly grabbed from the Celebration of Freespace thread.

Now, I'm going to add some more, but it'd be a lot quicker if a few other people were helping me out. So the procedure is thus:

Step 1 - Find a really cool screenshot that deserves a place on the main page of the wiki. It should show FS Open at its best, so we're looking for ingame shots with backgrounds and nice looking mediavp quality effects. Mods are acceptable, vanity shots of a single ship from the lab or techroom aren't. We're also not looking for things showing off table exploits or weird, funny weapon effects that people post in the thread. They're fine for the thread, but for this I'm really hoping to get only the best, sicne it's the mainpage and all. Anyway -

Step 2 - Save the screenshot as a jpg with the following filename pattern:

RScreen####.jpg

Where the #### obviously represents a 4 digit number, following an incremental sequence from the last uploaded screenshot. This will make it immensely simpler for everyone to figure out which screens are meant for the random feature, and keep the template neat. Once the file is saved, upload it to the wiki.

Step 3 - Go to this page (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Template:Random_Screen) and, following the syntax established, add your screenshot to the bottom of the list. Then do the same at this page (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Template:Random_Screen_2).

Congratulations! You've just contributed to this neat new feature. Thanks!

So go ahead everyone, upload some screenies for the mainpage. But remember, we're looking for the best of the best, so choose carefully.

[EDIT]Added a gallery (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Screenshots).

Duplicate screenshots occasionally appear.

This is awesome, time to do some searching.

I don't have any. :sigh:

love the idea.  Though i would suggest moving it further up the page if possible to make it more prominent.

edit:

I say this because i am running 1024x768 resolution on an old CRT monitor so I have to scroll more than twice the screen to see it so when I jump on to quickly run search i don't see it at all  :(

Someone (not me) needs to run through the Celebration thread and grab, like, a hundred screens from there. Also some glorious model and interface shots from FSU, BP, FSPort, etc.

Great idea! I like it.

A suggestion: have a wiki page that is a simple gallery of all of these screenshots. Not only does it allow people to browse all of the awesome screenies, it will make it a bit easier to avoid duplicates.

Making galleries was on schedule once, but no one has gotten around to making them.

I've added some more shots, and the main page now links to the newly created gallery (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Screenshots). Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to make the random screens talk to the gallery, so they have to be updated individually, but as long as we all stick to the established naming system, that should be easy.

just request from the users to punt it into another template/category, and let the gallery sort itself out automatically.

So screens from the hard light array thread aren't allowed, right?

since most of them arent ingame screenshots per-se, i think its safe to say, no, they aint allowed.

No Starfield.pof on those.

That doesn't disqualify them, I think :P

You know, FreeSpace is not all about starfield.pof. Besides, most of them show ships close to the 'camera', so one shouldn't focus on lack of some starfield model. Well, OK, i won't rant.

Well it is kinda trivial, but a lot of people consider starfield.pof just as important as glowmaps.

It looks like someone's gotten rid of the new tag Goober implemented for me, but I can't figure out why anyone would do that. The syntax is all the same as before it was busted, but the wiki's no longer reading <choose> and <option> as valid wikicode.

[EDIT]Yeah, confirmed it wasn't something done by any user edits - the new wikicode's definitely gone, somehow. I've PMed Goober, hopefully he can see what happened, if there's a changelog on the PHP or something. I'll leave it as is for the moment, but if it's not fixed soonish I'll pull it off the mainpage (temporarily) for neatness.

[EDIT]Goober came through, problem solvered. :D

Well, I didn't know the source for all the images I grabbed from the celebration thread, but it's easy enough to arrange the screenshots gallery into categories. I think the random ones should stay random though, rather than segregating them into categories, just to maximize the variety on the main page.

OK, just for everyone's information, it's starting to look like this breakage (and the last one) are the result of some weekly automatic reversion to a backup of the php that runs the wiki. I've asked Goober to look into it again, hopefully now that we know it's autoreverting he can figure out why, and either alter the backup or stop the autoreversion entirely. In any case, hopefully we'll know something soon.

It's broken because the wiki uses ages old skin template. I actually made a much newer template available months ago, but the admins who know about web designing haven't touched it. So until that template is done, this bug persists.

Here is a possible improvement can the system be modified to show a caption above or below each picture so the image submitter can put a brief description as to whats happening for people people who aren't familiar with any given mod or mission especially if the image shows a non retail ship class

I could have sworn I fixed this some time ago, but apparently it's been reverted. The file was uploaded as RScreen41.jpg, so it's listed incorrectly in the template (as RScreen0041.jpg).

Minor bump here, but just like to report that the two panels have the occasional tendency to display the same screenshot.  Any chance this could be remedied?
Title: Re: Screenshots! Screenshots!
Post by: Black Wolf on February 21, 2010, 10:59:55 am
It could, but it'd be messy, since you'd need to maintain 2 separate lists with different images. As it is, there's 46 screenshots on there, making it (if my maths is right) a 1 in 2116 chance that you'll get a repeat, and that probabilty decreases with every new screenshot that gets uploaded. So yes, there's a simple remedy - UL more pretty FSO screenies :)
Title: Re: Screenshots! Screenshots!
Post by: chief1983 on February 21, 2010, 12:15:51 pm
How is this feature coded?  I don't see why you'd need two separate lists if it's in a decent scripting language like PHP or something, just filter out the first value before the second pull, or keep trying until you get a different value.
Title: Re: Screenshots! Screenshots!
Post by: Black Wolf on February 21, 2010, 02:27:04 pm
AFAIK, it was a direct copy and paste off the mediawiki wiki and into our wiki's PHP. Fiddling with it, expecially since it'd involve getting an admin to do it, is probably more work than a 1 in 2000 chance requires. Again, upload more screenshots and the issue will diminish into insignificance.
Title: Re: Screenshots! Screenshots!
Post by: Aardwolf on February 21, 2010, 03:39:45 pm
if my maths is right

It's not :p The odds of having both be the same as a specific image is 1 in 46*46, but the odds of two images being the same as each other is 1 in 46. Which is much more common.
Title: Re: Screenshots! Screenshots!
Post by: Black Wolf on February 21, 2010, 03:45:07 pm
Bugger, you're right.

Erm... well, I know nothing about coding a fix, so if anyone wants to do that they're welcome, but I'm not keen on having two separate lists (as it'll get messy to maintain) and, TBH, even at 1/46 it's not going to be a common occurence... do people think this is going to be a really major issue?
Title: Re: Screenshots! Screenshots!
Post by: chief1983 on February 21, 2010, 04:12:51 pm
So if it's in PHP, I have a feeling I could make a quick edit to it to fix the issue.  I'd just need to see the code you inserted.

As a side note, I could use a little help in expanding the gallery over at F2S (http://sectorgame.com/f2s/gallery.php) too. Most of the screenshots we have there are archives from the original F2S site. That includes renders, retail screenshots (before SCP), some wallpapers and stuff like that. If anyone is going to be adding stuff to the Wiki screenshots, then throw those screenshots my way too. We are accepting anything tbh.
Title: Re: Screenshots! Screenshots!
Post by: karajorma on March 02, 2010, 08:45:47 am
It's a 1 in 46 chance. Let's say you have n pictures. Pick one, there will be a 1 in n chance that the other picture will be identical to it.

That said, I agree that I can live with a 1 in 300 chance of this happening. I'll see about getting some Diaspora shots into the rotation. :)

Maybe give this a shot, completely untested since I don't have a wiki to try it on.  Could possibly get caught in an infinite loop but I'm betting it won't.

Uploaded.

EDIT: And it white-screened.  This has happened to me in the past, and it always indicates a syntax error. ;)  I've restored the old version.
Title: Re: Screenshots! Screenshots!
Post by: chief1983 on March 09, 2010, 05:32:53 pm
Like I said, I didn't even have a way to test it.  Any chance I could get the error log from right after the whitescreen happens?  The server is configured to dump php errors to a log somewhere correct?  Otherwise I'm gonna have to look at this by hand which might take a little while, or at least take my changed code and put it through a lint filter.

Actually, I ran that file through php -l to check for syntax errors, there don't appear to be any.  It's likely either caught in a loop like I was afraid of or performing some other illegal operation after parsing, which I can't really reproduce.  I'll need to log to figure it out almost definitely.

The easiest way to do this would be with DPL (http://semeb.com/dpldemo/index.php?title=Main_Page) (MediaWiki.org link: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:DPL). It could be set up to pull two random screenshots from a given category, so you don't have to give them fancy names or edit the code after you upload a screenshot. Maybe it's a bit overkill though

It will always happen. Now and forever.

[EDIT]To clarify: There can never be enough images to eliminate the statistical likelihood of the exact same two images to show up. It will happen from time to time.

[EDIT]2. Hey - Why don't we put the images with paired numbers to the left and impaired ones to the right?
Title: Re: Screenshots! Screenshots!
Post by: Nx on June 16, 2010, 04:17:52 pm
Well, you can either do as I said  a few months ago (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=67551.msg1353079#msg1353079) or you can do it the hard way (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/User:Nx/sandbox) (although that is incredibly slow because the choose tag evaluates the second template inclusion in every option tag. I have made a modified version of the randomselection (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/User:Nx/randomselection) template extension that doesn't do that, and so is much faster.)

edit: brainfart
