Title: Release 2! Top down shooter
Post by: Spoon on February 10, 2010, 06:04:37 pm
So Axem and Redsniper were talking on IRC about a top down shooter idea for Freespace. I may or may not have been there at the same time.
REGARDLESS.
YOU
ARE
Alpha 1

Like usual. (See what I did there?) and you have to save the princess or something equally silly. Doesn't really matter.
You just fly around shooting things, dodging things in all four directions and bringing down Axem's flagship. All that without seeing the inside of a cockpit.
I just made this in one day and had noone else to test play it yet. If you encounter any bugs or wierdness, blame Axem.
--->DOWNLOADZ0R<--- (http://www.mediafire.com/?tieyndby3mj)
Now includes both missions, if you still have the first file delete it.

You'll probably need: the mediavp's
a recently nightly build
You'll most definitely need to: Set your left and right thrust buttons.

If I forgot anything you have the right to come back here and complain about it.

Glorious!
Turns out there is actually a SECOND TDS mission. Who would have imagined that?
I certainly didn't
Frankly, I wonder where it came from.
If you thought the first mission was hard, then brace yourself to play with REAL POWER.
Turns out Hades stole the precious thing and he enlisted the 34th HLP squadron to try and get rid of the Heroic Alpha 1. YOU CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN!
CAN.
NOT.

So.
Get to work.

Getting,

I wondered how long it would take people to do this........ :D

Cool... Reminds me a tiny bit of my "2D FreeSpace" of way back when... except yours is actually using the FS2 engine, I see. Not bad.

FSO already has all the tools needed for this. Only the A.I. has no idea on how to move on a 2D plane and will always try to go after the player on the Y axis which has some hilarious but stupid results.
Guided missiles are also nearly useless

Also: 109 views and only 9 downloads. Did 100 people just had a look at the first post and decided F*** it, I'm not going to fight Axem?  :p

Very cool and a blast to play

Still experimenting and struggling to get past the first group of turrets but so far I have found the following

1. You need nightly Revision 5862 to be safe

2. You will want to reconfigure your keyboard I currently find the following works well on a standard UK keyboard
Step 1 - set up a new pilot file (you should do this with any new mod anyway)
Step 2 - go into control config and hit the clear all button near the bottom right of the screen
Step 3 - set the controls as follows
Ship screen
Turn left                         - number pad 4
Turn Right                 - number pad 6
   Increase throttle 5 percent   - w
   Decrease throttle 5 percent   - s
   Afterburner                 - numberpad 8
   Right thrust                  - d
   Left thrust                 - a
Weapons tab
   Primary fire                 - SPACE
Secondary fire                 - number pad 0

you also might need to set the jump command again as i dont know if the mission auto ends or not
currently i dont think you need anything else to play as you only have one missile bank available in the supplied mission and two banks of subach

Issues

1. Is the ship and weapon selection locked for a technical reason?
2. On player death it looks like the laser fire is orientated sideways to its direction of travel using build 5862

Mission auto ends, no need to jump.

1. Ships and weapons are locked for gameplay reasons, because you can get upgrades in mission. Also, the Ulysses&Pegasus have such a thin target profile that you will get barely touched by enemy fire on a 2D playing field.
2. Nothing I can do about that, it's a 2D mission issue.

Hey, that looks really cool. For me though, the nightly build thing has me a little freaked out. I'm sure it shouldn't but it does.
Title: Re: Release? Top down shooter
Post by: headdie on February 12, 2010, 03:11:28 am
basically for the general player "nightly" means the team might change how a SCP feature works in between implementations.  Stability is rarely a problem with later build stages like we are in now, yes they will more than likely throw errors up on game start up (more noticeable if you run the debug exe) but they are very rarely fatal, to be honest i haven't used 3.6.10 since before Christmas.
Title: Re: Release? Top down shooter
Post by: Spoon on February 12, 2010, 06:54:57 am
Nightly is nothing to be scared about
This one will do for example http://swc.fs2downloads.com/builds/WIN/fso-WIN-Standard-20100131_r5862.7z
Download the file, extract the fs2_open.exe (you can ignore the other files) into your freespace folder. Then open the launcher and select the file you just extracted in it. Run the game
It's really that simple and nightlys are perfectly safe, they don't eat up your pc, crash it or do other naughty things  :p
Like headdie I haven't been using 3.6.10 for a few months now and never ran into any stability issues.

Aside from the appreciation of achieving nifty things with FS2_Open engine, I have zero interest in this genre of games (top-down shooters).

Ten for the effort though. :blah:

I don't quite get how this can be a 10-megabyte download. I'll examine it once the download finishes, though...

Edit: is that Touhou music?
Title: Re: Release? Top down shooter
Post by: Spoon on February 12, 2010, 06:22:51 pm
I had to change the gunmounts of the models and the fov of the turrets. Hench the 10mb
And yes its Touhou music, for a moment I considered putting in 'Marisa stole the precious thing' but that would have been a bit too gruel  :p

This is difficult, but quite fun. We should ask the SoL team to release their corridor missions script so that we can have a Tyrian-style game in the FSO engine :P
Title: Re: Release? Top down shooter

Hey, this is fun! Recommend setting controls to "Forward" and "Reverse" thrust instead of increase/decrease 5%.
Title: Re: Release? Top down shooter

You mean A and Z?
Title: Re: Release? Top down shooter
Post by: headdie on February 13, 2010, 06:05:10 am
thats the one, using forward and reverse thrust has the advantage of having a faster effect on your craft but the 5% route means you can set and hold an intermediate speed easier so its down to the player to experiment
Title: Re: Release? Top down shooter
Post by: Axem on February 13, 2010, 10:16:35 am
Ok, I finally gave it a try. I have only one thing to say. Too easy, way too easy. I'm supposed to kill Axem and I do that in like 30 seconds (unless you mean that GTC Axem in which case I'm doing a far better job at dying than he is).

Srsly though, I think the accelerations should be lowered a bit, make it easier to dodge this blob hell of yours. And morning stars? SRSLY?  :(

And yes its Touhou music, for a moment I considered putting in 'Marisa stole the precious thing' but that would have been a bit too gruel  :p

Then allow me to add "Spoon stole the precious mod" in the next JAD. :p

(Due to the conditions of the Axem Protection Act of 2010, Axem will NOT be appearing in this video game.)

Hey, /me has a question.

Can someone (I haven't touched FS in years, sorry :nervous: ) make missions with this format using only non- :v: assets, so we can uploazor this everywhere and get more good press for the SCP?  I could do the uploading if someone else managed to make the stuff.  Why I thought of this: 'cause I was going to upload this everywhere when I realized that I really can't.  :ick:

Oh, sure, avoid infringing on the FS2 copyright by infringing on Universal's (BtRL, IIRC), Warner's (TBP) or EA's (WCS) intellectual property, brilliant idea.

However, user-made models shouldn't be considered infringing, right?  Or no?

Not if they are based on the designs from someone elses' IP.

They may qualify as Fan Art, which may be protected, but nonetheless: Using someone else's IP without their consent is DMCA-able.

Maybe it's jsut hte new joystick, but I couldn't complete either mission wihtout cheating.
So I bumped hte HP of Axem and Redsniper considerably (on mission 2) and added a leviathan on my side (guiess who's piloting that one!).
I also added a friendly Ursa in the 1st mission.

So I cheat. :drevil:

I had a really hard time with the first TDS, dying, and taking 2 minutes to take down the Faustus. Then I realized I had two banks of subachs, not just one. I facepalmed and then polished off both missions.

Now to re-play on hard!
