Title: RELEASE: Bugfixed HTL Apollo
Post by: Woolie Wool on June 22, 2010, 12:12:16 am
(http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/3879/apollo.png)
NOTE: Twist of Fate screenshot shown. Model in download does not have GTA insignia on the skin.

I had Talon1024 seal the holes in the GTF Apollo that were caused by the 3DS Max exporter. As a side effect, the model had to be resmoothed, although I think he did a pretty good job of it. This one should have no collision holes, although the small rear profile of the Apollo can make it hard to tell sometimes. This will also make normal maps work properly on this model. A higher-res version of the original white and gray Apollo skin made from an unused TVWP Mustang Alpha skin with the original :v: cockpit is included.

Talon1024 - model repair
Crazybump - normal map

If you think you can further improve on the mesh, skin, normal map, etc., feel free.

I used my normal map workaround (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=62187.msg1380922#msg1380922) on this model while I was busy re-smoothing it, and that probably isn't the preferred way to get normal maps working properly.  Will the problem be fixed in a future version of the FSU shaders?

EDIT: Wait...  There's no normal map inside the zip.

Nice. I'm dropping it in my HW2 mod on the double, the textures look much better than the originals :D

Dammit, I think I have a curse. Everything I upload has something missing.

Updated with normal map.

Sweeeet.

A couple nitpicks though:
1.) Might be my lighting settings, but the Apollo looks way too shiny to me as of right now compared to every other ship. The textures don't lend themselves to super-shininess, and instead makes the entire thing look as if it was dipped in glaze. I'd edit that myself, but I don't know what opens DDS on my computer.
2.) There seem to be two diagonal seams on the top of the front parts of the engines. It appears to be where two tris meet to form the rectangular face that is there.
3.) There aren't supposed to be 3 thrusters in each of the side/secondary engines. In the original, it's only one on each side, located inside the recessed port.

The way Galemp modeled each "arm" of the Apollo, there are three different thruster nozzles. I put extra thrusters in because it looks awful having a bunch of big holes with no thruster flames coming out.

Is there any way that we could get "canon" versions of the HTL Apollo? Right now, it looks a little too busy in those thruster areas.

Why? I quite like the way it looks now. Seems like a powerful, maneuverable fighter.

You could just use the low-poly model, but with the new textures and normal maps. The UV mapping is the same.

I'm completely model illiterate, but how difficult would it be to remove those engine points? Would it not be an issue of selecting 4 objects/somethings and deleting them?

Edit: Okay, so it's not quite, I'm in MODELVIEW32, looking at the thrusters, and see their coords/radii. I just can't delete them...

Modelview sucks, use PCS2.

Whoa. PCS2 looks/works tons better.

Thx! Got this fixed, and (kinda barely) learned something today.

O_o
I don't get why you would just put one big thruster there (like how the HTL Apollo originally was).

That makes it clip the model and looks ****ing terrible. The three minithrusters look a lot better.

Fantastic... should we ask freespaceking to work on the textures? It'd be nice to have something like Lt. Ash's Apollo. :D

I want a gray FS1-retail style one, we already have a Lt. Ash skin, made by Turambar.

How could I forget that one? Thanks for the link... :)

Thanks much, guys. I've gone over your new texture and cleaned up and redrawn the bits that were still at low-res quality. It's going into the next FSPort MVPs.

Can I have it nao? Please? Pretty please?

Spoiler:
P.S. did you use any of those Twist of Fate weapon effects I provided?

Meh, alright. Here ya go.

Spoiler:
They need a lot of work to be integrated into our current data, and that's IF we like them better than what we're using now. I think we'll wait and see what the 3.6.12 MVPs with Blue Planet-developed effects look like, then work from there.

Most of the Blue Planet effects aren't primary weapon effects, which are what I had provided, and most of the ones you are using now have problems such as alpha channels being present and causing the bitmaps to blend improperly against light backgrounds.

Just noticed: why am I on the credits list? I don't think I ever worked on this :P
Unless you drugged me and made me do it in my sleep  :shaking:

(I think that should be Talon1024 there)

Ack! I'm terrible with names, especially multiple names ending with numbers.
