Title: Help is always appreciated
Post by: Lucika on October 06, 2010, 10:15:25 am
Thank you for your interest in helping the development Syrk: The Unification Wars!

If you're interested, then please feel free to post here and I will get back to you as soon as I can :)

Testers:
:bump:

We've made some massive changes in regards to ship handling and stuff like that, now we'd need people to test these. :) The bunch is kinda dormant nowadays.

Because we've had some issues of this before, let me point something out: while spotted FREDding issues will be noted, we can't guarantee an immediate fix as of yet because it is more important to make sure that the gameplay is not frustrating, but fun. :) Please take that into account and send me a PM if you'd like to partake!
Texturers: we already have MatthTheGeek onboard but I'm sure that a helping hand can never hurt.
FREDders: Almost all of Act I's missions are FREDded now, and even though balancing will definitely take some effort, we have the manpower to tackle this.
Tablers: At this moment, we've got everything done for Syrk table-wise and we have enough tablers onboard to make the necessary changes.

That is that for now, further edits will be coming when/if needed.

Right now ship tabling and weapons tabling are of the highest priority.

I'm interested

Here is an example of my tabling (http://www.mediafire.com/?p3bcak9fxcioilh)

This is from a project I am working on slowly and am not doing a huge amount with at the moment.

contained are tbm files for 3 ships and several weapons, know issues are that the close up on the Demolisher is set a little close and I am still balancing the range on the slammer missile which I am working on setting as a multi stage missile.  everything is currently in TBM as opposed to full tables while I get everything working as I want and then assemble it all later

and apologies on the texturing crude would be a gentle way of putting it.

We can keep you in mind for Beta testing, although it may be a while until testers are needed. If interested in FREDing, feel free to send me a previously done mission file to my e-mail ([email protected]) or you can post it here and I or someone else can take a look at it. :)

Okay here is my mission (attachment). It is an FS1 mission of a GTI fighter wing that takes place half a day before La Ruota della Fortuna. Requires FS-Port 3.2.

effects?

Could you tell me a bit more specifically what kind of effects you could put together? Ship and weapons related graphical effects, or something else that currently escapes my mind? :)

I believe weapon and explosion effects are the prototypical graphical effects for games.

And by the way: Why do you call FREDders PETERers or BOBers?
Title: Re: Help is always appreciated
Post by: General Battuta on November 10, 2010, 03:44:20 pm
Fred, Peter and Bob are all common male first names, I guess?

And that's it? I thought there was a good reason why he chose exactly these two names. I associated "PETERer" to the phrasal verb "peter out." I was wondering if there was a connection. :P

Nope :P I'm not sure how these names came exactly to my mind back then.

[sarcasm] However, SIMONer, JOEer, CHARLESer, and possibly NICHOLASer could apply as well. [/sarcasm]

effects?

can we have a comment about this???????  :nervous:

personally speaking the weapon effects in MVP and Port look good but a few custom effects would be nice and help give the mod a more individual look

If you can make a giant cone of green ice cream arrive every time the player gets a kill, you'll be personally mentioned in the campaign ;)

Sorry for the lack of response, my Internet connection was virtualy unusable in the last days.
While no beams (pre-FS1 ;)), I think you will prove to be a useful addition :) Welcome aboard!

Will be getting you internal access in a bit.

Updated the original post, FREDders are welcome. So much so that I've changed that back to green from yellow.

A lot of projects are starved for FREDders. ED has an enormous pile of assets and only one really active mission designer (Tantalus). The community needs to start turning out more mission talent, FRED's easy and fun*!

Not even expertise is required, I think if someone is capable to set up the mission basics, the more experienced FREDders on the team(s) can probably handle the more advanced stuff, at least that is the way I tend to organize things around here. What's your way to handle the drought?
Title: Re: Help is always appreciated
Post by: General Battuta on February 11, 2011, 02:51:27 pm
On BP? Well, it started out with Darius doing everything and I learned to FRED from him (basically trained up from scratch.) Our only other FREDder is Axem who is, well, Axem. So our FRED team is actually pretty small compared to something like ED, which has something like 6 or 8 FREDders but no firm overall direction so they don't know what to do.

My advice would be to get a small group (2, 3 or 4) of FREDders who know the lore intimately, have firm outlines to work from, and receive prompt and strong feedback from the rest of the team at every stage of drafting the mission. Quality over quantity, and direction really helps - you seem to know what you're doing storytelling-wise. The drought isn't so much a problem when you only need a few good designers to get a strong campaign done.

I don't know about the idea of having a starting crew and a finishing crew. I think there's something valuable in having the same lead on a mission from start to finish and only tag-teaming stuff like bugfixes. But it could work well!

Try recruiting on the FRED board, too.
Title: Re: Help is always appreciated
Post by: General Battuta on February 11, 2011, 02:57:05 pm
I would say try to recruit just one or two and invest heavily in them rather than going for a lot. ED brought a ton of FREDders onboard at once and it didn't really translate into an immediate productivity boost.

/me looks at Syrk's Wiki page.

Ouch! 60 missions is a lot, unless you're aiming for quickly thrown-together basic missions. How many missions are at 0% completion and unassigned?

We'll be doing act-based releases. Act I will feature 18 missions, if I'm not mistaken, currently 6 of them are in beta stage. I hope that the later acts will draw greater attention and we will have more people to work with.

(The low number of in-progress missions is mostly due to the fact that we still keep on changing our build a bit. We are currently adding the final "wishlist" and then everything will finally be green-lit)

And as I have (probably :nervous:) stated here and there, I made this my school project so we kinda have to get 20 missions done until May.

All the best with getting more FREDders :), I'll try my hand at it if/when I get the time to sit down.

Until then, Lucika has kindly given me the opportunity to write for Sryk. A job a personally hope to excel in.
Thanks again Lucika!

I'm willing to help out at FREDding if you're still looking.

I can also help out with tabling, re-texturing and general Photoshop(ing)

Here's a link to an old campaign I made, which also had a little bit of tabling. Let me know what you think.

Alright, I've did some digging + played through 1,5 missions, looks promising considering its "age". Sadly my computer is a dying Goliath so it will lose power in a few minutes, unless a miracle occurs soon. I'll be contacting you as soon as I will be able to.

Alright, my comp works again but I won't be around tomorrow, or at least not much. I played through missions 1-3 and glanced at the rest in FRED. Looking at its age and my policy (I am not sure that this was severey bugtested, I didn't encounter anything but read the release topic), glad to have you aboard. :) I'll be granting you private access momentarily, hopefully it will work out (with Veers' access, I needed Fury's assistance).

It's all apart of the learning curve :), you'll get it this time.

And losing complete access to the normal board was kinda cool, I was first thinking it was a major security policy for the project :P

In fact, as far as I know (according to Fury), even that one wasn't my fault, either. :)
