Title: FRAPS skews 2D elements
Post by: BirdofPrey on October 08, 2010, 05:57:58 pm
Not sure if this goes here or not, it's a Freespace Open Problem, but is caused by or related to FRAPS use.

Aside from a massive framerate drop (often goes down to single digit FPS) and associated jerkiness, which I suspect is just a case of me needing to edit my detail settings, whenever I start recording with FRAPS the 2D elements get skewed.  It happens to briefing icons, the hangar bay doors (ie. menu items), and if I open the settings window the buttons there go wonky too along with the dialogue box buttons.  If I open a menu while in space, when I close the menu the HUD also ends up out of whack.  I am currently running the latest version of FSO and am having this issue with the Media VPs as well as FSPort.  At the moment I am using the free version of Fraps because I don't want to pay for something that isn't going to work, so I am not going to buy it unless I can get it to work.

If anyone can help me get fraps to work, or suggest an alternative to fraps that will work, it will be appreciated.
My current system is a Toshiba Satelite L505D with:
Athalon II Dual core M300 (2.00 GHz)
2.75 (Usable) memory
ATI mobility Radeon HD 4200

Let me know if theres anything else I should post.  Since FSO uses open GL I figured a DXdiag would be useless, but is there an OpenGL equivalen?

Not that I recall at this point, but a fs2_open.log (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.msg1180359#msg1180359) is always needed.  Also an example of this issue occurring would be helpful.

For your framerate problem, I don't think it's your PC. Those specs should be able to run everything except MV_Advanced and MV_AnimGlows, and the resource-intensive War In Heaven mod. FSO only ever uses one core, so run it on the first core (which is the default) while you run FRAPS exclusively on the second.

As for the skewed effects problem, a screenshot would definitely help, if you can get one. Not sure a fs2_open.log is needed but you should always post one just in case.

A (basic) fs2_open.log is always helpful, even if it just tells us that the engine thinks nothing is wrong.

I have no problems with fraps simply running; the interface is fine until I choose to record something.  After that, whether I am recording or not, certain interface elements are screwed up.  The HUD didn't go wonky this time, and I forgot to take a screenshot of any of the menus (though I got it in a video that's too big to attach), but I got a shot of before recording and after recording during the briefing and of the main hall after recording.
