-
Nice, ive been itching for a new campaign. I'll play it right now.
Ooh voice acting... even sweeter. Looking forward to this.
-
That is a nice icon.
-
Downloading now. Always good to see new releases.
-
Downloading, this was unexpected so I'm pretty interested. and I love ridiculous campaigns in itself so :P
-
I have no idea what exactly this is going to be about... "Rediculous" can mean mostly anything. DLing and playing, should be a nice break from coding Java all day.
[EDIT] I won't be incredibly harsh here unless this breaks something... but why for the love of Yog-Sothoth are you using ships and weapons.tbl instead of .tbm? You've already said this requires SCP, so there's no reason to clutter up the install with such outdated files. (outdated in the sense of using them for mods, not the base install, that is.)
-
tbms aren't strictly better than tbls.
what if I don't want the retail stuff there cause I'm not using it and I want them out of the way in FRED?
-
Out of the way in the tbl is better than out of the way in FRED. I just go with the strategy that tbms make the entries more modular -> easier to use in any setting.
But I digress. Again, I don't have a real problem with it unless it breaks something and I haven't tested it yet.
-
Dude, you can just delete them in the TBL and they'll be out of the way in both.
That was the way to do things before the standardization of Inferno builds, and I still think it's a good idea to get rid of what you don't need.
-
Agreed, if you're not maintaining total backwards compatibility I'd say there's nothing wrong with a nice clean tbl.
-
Oh man, I am on mission 6 and I had to stop just to say how awesome this campaign is. It's something else.
You will laugh, you will cry. This campaign is a good time!
I would say more but I must keep playing.
-
I've only played two missions, but this looks promisingly hilarious. Will play more in the next few days!
-
For some reason the custom music doesn't play in 3.6.13 builds. :(
-
Finished the campaign! Nice work.
I like how the campaign started reasonable and then quickly went crazy. What a ride. Must have been as much fun to make as it was to play.
The Pig Latin translation incident had me laughing the air out of my lungs.
I'm guessing all the voice acting was Ironbeer, nice job. It really makes a difference when devs take that extra effort.
Notible quotes:
I think god just divided by zero.
Galactallica... more hardcore than you (its appearance almost made me roll over laughing)
"We realize we have no chance of actually challenging Galactallica on musical grounds."
Almost anything your squad mate personas say.
Nitpicks(minor things):
The first stage of the briefing for 'Babling fish' contains a voice file with the entire briefing in it.
Squadmates guardian at 1%. Usually guardian at a random low number looks more realistic, but pfft realism. It's a minor thing in campaigns like this.
Death by beamfire in Sparta!
I punished myself by picking an Aries in showdown. Flying around the 'final form' to hit the reactors took awhile. 40min mission... don't you dare die in that one!
Overall comments:
Simple game play, engaging but not overwhelming.
Solid Freding, awkwardness/buggyness was minimal or non-existent.
Wildly entertaining plot (or plothole)
Cool characters, great sense of humor.
JAD has a contender!
I would mention things outside the spoiler, but I think this mission is best played with no expectations. Just play it! I can already say it's one of my favorites.
-
Hahaha. A lot of fun!
Galactallica had me cracking up! Favorite part for sure.
Only thing I noticed that wasn't well polished was in Container Containment, the transport that gets beamed to death sends its messages after it blew up.
Was the final cutscene supposed to play music? I got an emergency broadcast signal type sound when it ran.
-
Pretty sure that was supposed to play.
Fun campaign. I was like "**** yeah!" when the doom music started playing, great choice of music overall. I couldn't stop laughing when dragonforce started playing and the rave ships opened fire. Even though the voice acting could be dull at some points (MORE EMPHASISM!)
Overall. Good campaign!
-
more stuff to play? okay...
downloading
-
This name is ridiculous!
Errrr--- downloading.
-
 Are You Doomed? .... Dloaded and play it on.
Peter :pimp:
-
This campaign was completely ridiculous, and completely awesome. It was ridiculously awesome!
-
This campaign [...] was ridiculously awesome!
Quote-mined for truth!
I was laughing out of my chair for more than a fair bit of the campaign. This is up there with JAD only less silly (that's a good thing :P)
No bugs that I can remember, solid fredding, good script, pretty good voice acting. This one's a keeper!
I had one criticism, but I've forgotten, so it can't have been very important.
-
Um, could someone give me a mirror, because my college has this hatred for mediafire. Megaupload works for me if you need what.
Edit: Nevermind, I have acquired it from a different source. Namely, a certain kitchen utensil.
-
good, something to play with! :D
-
Wow. I must say I'm impressed with the positive feedback this campaign's been getting. :D
Thank you, everybody who's been downloading this nutty little project, I really appreciate it.
Now, on to supar-special author responses!
@Shivan Hunter: I used basic .tbls because I didn't know how to work .tbms when I began developing this mod. When I did figure out .tbms about halfway through the development phase, I decided to just stick with a sure thing. Simple as that.
@Quent: Erm, the custom music is actually implemented as looped sound effects. Maybe there's something with the .13 builds that don't like that. I dunno, again development was exclusively on the .12inf platform.
@Bigchunk:
-M3 briefing stage 1 has been fixed; the first update was actually posted because of that issue. Good catch!
-Guardianing is clumsy, but I really couldn't come up with a more elegant solution at the time. I mean, even if the threshold is set to a more realistic value, like 23% or summat, most players would get suspicious when seeing your wingmates eat Hornet salvo after Hornet salvo. Guardianing is guardianing in my book.
-M7, durr. Hate to say it, but "avoid the beam, and you won't get hit, pilot!" :p Ok, serious now. I've only really had issues with friendly-fire beams against the initial 2 corvettes. After that, the mission should pretty much be a cakewalk. Maybe try a different ship- I personally favor a Sekhmet loaded with some Helioses on this mission.
-M8, I actually favor an Ares for this mission! Yeah, the length is a low point, and I was honestly worried that might annoy a lot of people. During development, I just couldn't come up with a way to split the mission without wrecking the pacing, so I opted to make the last half or so really easy- I didn't want to ape players who made it that far with random beamings or vicious dogfights.
@FIZ, and regarding the closing cutscene in general,
Yes, the tone is supposed to play.
In fact, the cutscene actually has a certain significance. Anybody willing to hazard some theories?
@Hero:
The voiceacting actually was me just grabbing some of my friends while we were hanging out at my place and me saying, "Hey, you wanna voice act for a small project of mine?"
In no case (except for my own parts) did any of the recording go beyond two sessions. None of us are professionals, we just did it for the hell of it. For future projects, I can beat my underlings friends such that they can emote a bit more. That said, I'd actually be mildly inclined to agree with your comment.
@Anybody else who had something to say that I'm not categorically answering here:
Thanks for the responses, really! I've been fretting about getting this project out the door pretty much ever since completion was drawing near. It really tugs the 'ol heartstrings to see people enjoying it so much!
-

How about a checkpoint? ;7
-
A checkpoint would actually be perfect. How could I go about setting it up?
(Yes, yes. There will be a Director's Cut incorporating various upgrades at some point in the future. Just don't ask when.)
-
That actually depends on how complex the mission space is at the time. However, the basics are simple: you need to store player position and health, as well as the health of any mission-critical ships, to player persistent variables. Setting up the load is...slightly more complex.
It works best if there's a bottleneck in mission phase space at which point the only major ships present are capships in predictable locations, with few enemy fighters.
-
Downloading , I cant wait for play it, :)
-
This looks interesting. The campaign title is certainly unique. We will see if it lives up to its name. :)
-

It's late, I have a test tomorrow.
So I took the time to mirror it. :)
-
Woaaaaaaaah!
This campaign is quite well named :P
If you haven't already, i'd say go play it asap
I don't quite agree with some people around though, because honestly... i don't think the campaign was that funny.
It was quite fun so i was smiling 3/4 of time... but i don't think i actually laughted at any point :nervous:
So i'd recommend it more as a real good campaign than as some JAD/DEM like campaign (i really liked it, i guess it'd go in my personal top5 campaign list o_o)
The story evolved a bit strangely imo, the whole atmosphere of first levels got completely vaporized around the end. (BTW, does the ending means a sequel or something? I didn't really get it :s)
Aside from that, all i can say is...
 for Mission Design
  for ANIs and cool stuff
   for the Music
    THIS!
     IS!
      THE VOICE ACTING!
I dunno whether you hired idiot monkeys to voice act for the first campaign part or it was simply uber-goodly-good voice actors, but the whole ridiculous feeling sure got through imo. The voices were kindda.... beautifully strange and, uhhh, "tasteless". (All this might sound like it was bad but it was serious good imo in the campaign context :nervous:)
And in what i consider as the second part, the voices were definitely immersive (probably because i got used to those strange voices too... i mean, i feel like they were polar opposites of the usual freespace voices but i guess that was the point)
Mewantsanupgradedversion!
-
Quite an amusing campaign, the voice acting was a charming touch.
Gave me a few smiles and a few laughs.
FRED wise could use some polishing (a male voice but a female .ani? Fighter wings without orders, several missions play themselves etc)
But overal, good effort
-
Favorite moment:
Wingman: The Nav Buoy seems to indicate we're in the Sparta system
Me: ...oh Jesus.
This made me laugh. And, as advertised, I felt ridiculous while playing it. :) Well done
-
Giving it a try, parodies aren't often my thing with FS campaigns but I'll give it a go.

That would be why this campaign is ridiculous. :D
-
Excellent campaign. Was very fun.
Some really good witty banter there, congrats.
-
Just finished it, had fun! Love the VA'ing.

i know rite?

This is incredibly silly!
There needs to be more campaigns like this.
-
I haven't had time to play this yet, but I was digging thru the VPs for kicks and discovered that the Apollo model seems to be the old version that has single thrusters in each of the side pods instead of triple thrusters. Intentional modification, or actually outdated model?
Edit: closer inspection reveals that the Apollo lacks normal maps and has a weird shine map. Again, I'm not sure if this is intentional (played for jks at some point?) or some sort of mistake.

My reaction was the same.
Also, Doom 1, Episode 1, Level 1 music = ****ing awesome

Which recalls me, this might be just normal, but i noticed the "Immortal" wing of Dragoons don't have shields o_O...
This makes easy to kill em in 2 burst (with 2/4 cannons, because of the whole canon placement on the Artemis)
-
Just Finished the campaing , It´s really awesome , I love this campaing , with this I am more decided to finish learning the tutorial on fred and make my own campaing, again really good work ;)

Try them on with an Erinyes/Ares with maxims. :D
-
Not finished yet, but...
... I laugh at the "this is Spartaaaaa !!!" mission because I just had a joke about that with a friend this week
Very fun to play. Fresh and amazing.
-
I've played it, and overall I enjoyed it. A very funny campaign :).
As soon as I saw 'Sparta system', I knew what was going to happen :P
The voice acting was quite good - I don't know how many times I laughed at the line 'Agh! He's not even good! Help please!' especially with how unconcerned he sounds. Vasudan speech ->
The whole thing with the Galacttalica was great as well. Especially as some of my friends really like Metallica.
The one thing that annoyed me was how long the second-last mission took to complete - I was in a Sekhemet (my wingmen flew a variety of ships as the briefing said to be prepared for anything) and it took me about 50 minutes to complete the whole mission - I took my time taking down the reactors as I didn't want to get shot down and have to do it all again. Don't think I've had quite as many kills though!
-
Duh :( Everyone seem to have been seeing that one joke coming, but i guess that's because i never saw the film and nobody ever explained it to me... (i watched the scene on youtube afterwards so i would get it in other games and stuff :P)
-
I just finished it.
Got me some LOL's for the day, thank you sir :D
Loved:
Sparta attack
Funky Beam Hecate Fleet
Translator turned into piggy Greek
VA
-
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED EVERYTHING INVOLVING GALACTALLICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"WE CHALLENGE YOU TO A COSMIC BATTLE OF THE BANDS"
Also, I absolutely love your taste in music.
-
Aye, this campaign like you said is truly Ridiculous :). It had the feeling of "lol wut," very good taste of music, and just plain old :wakka: in a lot of parts. Great job at FREDing, this campaign was completely worth the time to play through it all and expierance the crazy aids. ;)
Spoiler:
Big lolz at the Vasudan translation parts and the Galactallica crazyness.
-
Compared to this JAD and Deus Ex are nothing :D The Hecate lasershow was totally the best part.
-
Jad has his moments like the transformation moment , I think in jad 2 , it was awesome :D
-
I would say the funniest thing ever was the "notsurehowitwasnamed" making a blockade of the node in JAD.
But this one has it's funny moments as well
-
I'm going to add, the Gamma weapons are immensely ridiculous. :D
-
I'm going to add, the Gamma weapons are immensely ridiculous. :D
Oi! You aren't even supposed to know about those unless you have a death wish!
(Or use cheats, but yeah...)
-
:P
-
What's wrong with them o_o ?
Btw, i couldn't resist adding something on the "Plot-hole" page of TVTropes since DEM was already listed (someone should add JAD btw)
Click at u'r own risk : http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PlotHole

Load a Massive Battle mission and see for yourself. ;7

Bump
Turns out there was a flaw in my design that made all the missions impossible to fail. Whoops. :ick:
Release post has been updated with the fixed campaign. Presently only on Mediafire.
-
What? No. Consider it a necessary plothole for the purposes of uh, plot. :nervous:

Yes, but not intended. There are a couple obvious "plot-break" points in the campaign: any time the Arbitrary or Galactallica is on the field, they probably need to survive for the rest of the story for things to make sense.
Well, except for Galactallica in mission 8...
-
silly campaign. Since I prefer deep thought provoking tales, this is not for me.
On the other hand, it's still funny and it is consequent in its approach.
-
Awesome campaign...
The only major issue I had was if the any of the mission-critical ships like the GTD Arbitrary somehow got disabled by beam fire the mission would suddenly come to a grinding halt (such as the engagement with the Lucifer).
Other than that the campaign was awesome. On the last mission when trying to take out the IronBeer (lolz) the sheer size of that ship just astounded me. It took a good 5-10 minutes just to fly from one side to the other, and about as long just to position myself for bombing runs to get a good LOS shot at it.
-
Only got around to finishing this today. Quite a solid campaign.
The rapid-fire beams with the accompanying dialogue ("3, 2, 1, beam-free-all!") and music had me hysterical with laughter. Galactallica was hilarious as well.
The voice acting, whilst occasionally seeming a little emotionless, was by and large quite successful. The wingmen were done well, I found myself actually quite liking the people I was flying with. And some of the persona lines were funny too, especially "Agh! He's not even good... help please.". The tone in which that was delivered made me laugh a bit every time I heard that line. So congratulate your voice actors on a job well done.
And with regards to the last cutscene, Do I smell a sequel?
-
hey, whats the name f the song
used in the mission fire and flames??
-
I'm gonna guess 'Through the Fire and the Flames' by DragonForce. Blindly.
-
thanks for your help
-
Glad to see people are still downloading this thing!
Ok, @CommanderDJ
Aiight people, you heard it here first, I AM intending to do a sequel should I come up with enough ideas to make a decent campaign. However, Ridiculous 2 will be the end of this storyline, full stop. And there are other projects I'd like to try before that, as well.
@Niue
Damn, good catch. I really need to actually get my stuff beta-tested in the future... :doubt: Anyways, expect to see a lot of stupid small things like that fixed in an upcoming Director's Cut.

First off http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Ridiculous (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Ridiculous)
Second off I'm uploading the new version of Ridiculous to FreeSpaceMods. Do you think you should tell Swantz/Achtung to delete the old one?
-
Hello. This is my first post here.
I am a huge fan of FreeSpace series since I was a child (I saw it first time when I was 8, when my brother bought FreeSpace 1, and since then we've been playing), but I never came to a fan community which were releasing new campaigns and so.
... so I have no idea about how to install your campaign :$ . In the first post you say that is the habitual method to install and run, but what is that method?
Thanks for your help.
PD: I'm from Spain, so I'm sorry about my possible mispellings, grammar errors, or whatever I may being writing in wrong way :P
-
Hey, Nahar! Don't worry, the HLP community is here to help.
First off,
:welcome:
Now, I'm assuming you have the latest release build and MediaVPs installed. If not, read this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=61606.0) and follow the steps there.
Now, once you have all that set up, download the Ridiculous campaign files in the first post of this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=72554.0). Extract them (using a program like 7zip or WinRAR) into your main FreeSpace2 folder (they should extract themselves into a folder called "Ridiculous"). Next, open up your FS2 launcher, go to the MOD tab, and select the Ridiculous folder. Click "Apply", then "Run". Create a new pilot, go to the campaign room, select Ridiculous, and enjoy!
If you run into problems, post in this forum (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=151.0) and someone will no doubt help you out. Enjoy your stay!
Oh, it looks like the Shivans want to welcome you too:
:welcomered:
-
Woah, thanks for the welcome.
Well, I'm installing ridiculous. Yesterday I installed all the mediavps (thanks to the community in #irc :P) and the latest inferno build. I'll tell you what happened, or if I can play.
Thanks!
-
Well, I've been testing the campaign, and it's cool. The only thing that I dislike it's the voice acting: it seems in some parts a little unexpressive. But well, I'll keep playing.
-
http://freespacemods.net/download.php?view.664
The new link for 1.02. Thanks ktistai
I took the liberty of adding it to your post. :nervous:.
-
I'm downloading Ridiculous right now. :)
-
This campaign is completely ridiculous. I like the sheer metal tone of it. And that tune... oh my does that bring me some ancient frag memories ;)
-
I played it... I have to admit that it's a worth addition to our series of parody campaigns. :)
-
That. Was. Awesome. !.
I almost pissed myself laughing several times during that campaign, but man did I make a mistake during the last boss mission; The Ares is NOT a good ship to use if you want to do things quickly!
The gods of metal approve! \m/
-
For Ridiculous 2 you should use a Gargant
-
I don't think you're going to win a Gargant in a campaign.
-
But having one would fit the theme of the campaign
-
I would just like to state that I laughed my ass of playing this, and it wasn't too shoddy mission side either. Very good sir.
-
I don't think you're going to win a Gargant in a campaign.
"Today is your lucky day, for you just scored the Gargantl Jackpot! The Gargant Jackpot is one (1) fully crewed and equipped SH Gargant, to be sent to your current position immediately!"
-
For Ridiculous 2 you should use a Gargant
I actually looked into using the Gargant for this episode- there are only about 2 copies of the ship in existence, and neither will be public any time soon. Sorry. :sigh:
-
Hey, at least you tried. That's more than can be said for those Blue Planet snobs :hopping:
-
Dude, what is it with your obsession with that ship? Actually, it can't even really be called a ship, It's a huge freakin set piece that looks hideous and cant really be properly used in a mission. Even the Gigas is difficult to actually have good gameplay around, and isn't it already hilariously massive enough? What good could having the Gargant possibly do?
-
Nice, looks like you guys managed to troll someone.
-
Two thumbs up!!!! Very entertainning!!!
-
Hey, at least you tried. That's more than can be said for those Blue Planet snobs :hopping:
A good campaign don't need uber vessels to be awesome. Inferno is an exception.
And the Gargant is way too big. I can't understand why people get obsessed with those unbalanced uber ships. Simply place to Gigas ships und let em explode^^
Ridiculous was really entertaining! Loved the Freespace 1 intro moment:" Oh crap, the Lucifer's incoming." I said.
But then the Sathanas jumps out....:D
