Title: Standaloneness
Post by: Mobius on November 27, 2010, 07:57:56 am
What happened, and why? At first, it sounds a bit confusing.

If UW is standalone, I strongly suggest some serious ModDB pimping. Have you guys planned anything like that?

UW is not standalone. The team just felt it sucked enough that they didn't want the rest of T-V War chained to it. So it's been split off into a separate project with a separate continuity and abandoned.

So, in poor words, it's being redone?

I'm guessing no, they just didn't want it influencing the TVWP overall project.

No, not to my understanding. Please read the last word of my post.

General feeling was that a) it sucked and b) it distracted from what TVWP was supposed to be really about. So it's been jettisoned.

The TVWP team didn't want to be burdened by having to remain consistent with the 'canon' of the UW Mod.  It's about not being tied down by ten year old story decisions when making the war proper.

Unification Wars campaign wasn't bad, in fact, it used to be quite innovative.
Of course, it's old, so I think that an upgrade could make it a lot better.

Several SCP features were implemented specifically for the UW as well.  Off the top of my head I can think of primitive sensors and ballistic primaries.  Not that another MOD wouldn't have added them eventually. . .

The plan sort of going through my head (And i think Goober's too if i read his words right) was to eventually retcon the U-War storyline; no colossal changes, just better graphics, a more polished and in depth story, perhaps a few more missions and perhaps a few new ships/weapons if we have the time. However, the group really want to get on with the Terran-Vasudan war (as it is our point after all ) and i agree with that, so U-War will be retconned on paper and you may hear about aspects of the new story in the T-V campaigns (again, no colossal changes so it wont be a spoiler), but the actual U-War remake won't be till progress has been made on T-V chapters.

So essentially, the TVWP will be set after a retconned U-War storyline, but said retconned U-War will be coming later on.

Sorry for the confusion with all of this, really should've got an explenation up quicker; not a good start to my newfound leadership. :sigh:

Thanks, that explains a lot. :)

I did.

Also, "standalone" gives the feeling of a mod which doesn't require FSO to run. That's why I was a bit confused in the first place.

English lesson, then: 'abandoned' means 'left to die', not 'redone'.

INFA has been abandoned in favor of INFASA, which is its remake/upgrade (hence the similarity with UW/TVWP you can notice in T-Man's latest post). It'd be weird to just abandon UW without working on something supposed to replace it.

Or it would not be weird, because TVWP has wasted enough time and effort on something that was only meant to be a prelude.
