Title: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on December 24, 2010, 09:16:24 pm
Alright everything done so far is getting posted here.

Before you download any of the models you'll need a few additional files, depending on how you're going to be using the model.

:pimp: Note you do not need all of them, read below for what you actually need.

If your using the models with Saga's game, then all you need is #1
If your using the models for your own stand-alone mod, i.e. not using saga , you will need #1 and #2, otherwise you might be missing textures.
Sorry, prologue is no longer supported, the final has all of the prologue stuff included with better quality.

For additional WC  weapons/missiles from the entire series, I have been rebuilding my Scooby-Additional vp file.  Latest version is here:
Scooby Additional: http://scoobydoo.freespacemods.net/Release/Scooby-Additional-07-23-12.7z

There still is plenty of privateer 1 & 2 weapons missing and lacking descriptions ("PLACEHOLDER") and some sound fx.  If you can get those I'll add them to the tables.  Hopefully we can get this vp to be all inclusive.

Some other details

I won't go into the details of the changes, most are pretty evident. Ships are scaled down to match Saga's (more or less). (Fighters are similar sized while cap ships can go from smaller to much larger than those of similar class). Weapons, intakes and thrusters have been updated and detailed.

Edit: If you want to keep the cockpits, you'll need a newer build than what came with Prologues, it doesn't support $Cockpit POF:.

Thanks Scooby for releasing your collection of WC Awesomeness! Each one of these models rock!  ;)

Having technical trouble on the Foxbat: Glass for it isn't working on the main model -- Can't seem to be able to fix it. I've got the right textures and everything for reference. Any ideas what might be happening?

Edit: Also, holes around the cockpit areas of the Ghost and Foxbat. Thought I might point them out. Cheers.

Try the foxbat again, I've tried to fix it.  There seems something goofy with the transparency on the glass.  I think it has to deal with the sharp edges.

Not just foxbat, but the Ghost as well. There seem to be holes all around the cockpit ( on the normal model ), and the glass appears as if with inverted normals.

I see it too, but I don't see how it's happening.  I think part of the problem is transparency and shine doesn't behave like you would expect.

edit: DUH!!! having an actual shine-map does wonders LOL
I've updated the foxbat and ghost and the SagaPre vp files.  I'm not 100% happy with the environmental mapping on the glass but for now it should work.  At least you can see the glass now.

For what it's worth, while the WC style doesn't appeal to me, I can totally dig the quality of these texs. Good work Scooby.

Nice, but you still didn't changed the Terran pilot textures and inculded an ugly placeholder HUD texture (it could have some gauges painted on).
I've made two textures with an F-16 pilot and F-22 HUD gauges, I'll test soon them and upload.

Missile turrets, I see both have issues, fixing now.

Anything from that vp is only temporary-placeholder.  I'll fix that next (most of the missiles just need an existing model).  I threw it together rather quickly

edit: and I think I fixed the environmental map goofiness (or at least partially fixed it)

The Falcon has hierarchy issues--you can see through parts of the ship under the cockpit. Try looking at the Falcon against a bright backdrop like a nebula and see. Also, the Falcon's model is off center and you appeared to try to use an offset in PCS2 to center it. This does not work. You have to physically move the object to the center in your modeling program and re-export.

Alright fixed the off-center.  The model pivet point wasn't at 0,0,0 that's all.   The problem with the see under the cockpit is a bit more complicated.  There is actual polygons there, but they're part of the main hull, hence they can't be seen.  Thinking of a solution...

If they're the same scale as the older releases fighters will be significantly larger.
For example the Excalibur is 32 (Correct?) meters in length.

Most are definitely smaller. I've forgone the "accurate" sizes and went with more realistic sizes. Nothing worse than having a light patrol that dwarfs a bomber

Did you grab the Saga Pro-2-Final vp?  If so give this one a try: http://scoobydoo.freespacemods.net/Release/Pro-2-Final.rar  Ugh that's not what I meant to paste...
This one: http://scoobydoo.freespacemods.net/Release/Pro-2-Final-12-27-10.rar

I've edited the table a bit more, hopefully got rid of all the pof's that weren't part of the Prologue.  Some things may not look right but the names and values should let you build missions that are compatible with the final when it's released.  Think of it as a placeholder.

I took a closer look at the fighters and I noticed that Ghost is missing it's subsystems, there's a table error in Hound (three gun banks in table, two on the model) and that POFin in general is rather sloppy (subsystems, for example, are often lined up on the axis of a ship, instead of being located on the hull).
Also, I'm disappointed with Arbalest, it's missing cockpit of any sort. Devastator and Liberator don't have external cockpits at all.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on December 31, 2010, 03:42:09 pm
Fixed the Ghost and the Hound.  The subsystems are generally copied from one ship to another with some minor modifying to fit onto the ship.  I just added them so the model won't give errors, you can adjust/add/remove them however you deem fit.

As for the ships that lack cockpits, those will be added at some latter date.  They don't have the standard bathtub style cockpit, and the Liberator I need a head for the copilot. (Kinda creepy looking to your right and seeing your co-pilot headless LOL.

That's already the case with the Galaxy, though copilot's body might not be visible from the front seat (still, you'd seem to have no copilot, while in external view, he's there).
Also, yet another bug found.

Ya, at least there it's not as disturbing...

Anyways fixed the Demon, actually it had the opposite problem of the Hound. The table was correct but there was a spare empty gun platform.  Not sure where it came from, the max model doesn't have it.

I've just noticed that Ajax and Hunter have a set of red pipes on top of their hulls, which seems like it was intended to be a VLS launcher, but it isn't a turret. Could you change these structures into turrets?
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on January 07, 2011, 06:03:26 pm
They were meant to be one-shot torpedo launches (Saga's Sheffield has it too) but for game balance they were just for show.

What would work best for them? A missile bank or a turret?  (if it's a missile bank then it's easy to add them in)
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Dragon on January 08, 2011, 04:22:56 am
A turret, give it 360 degrees FOV and don't add "fire down normals" flag in tables.
You'll also need a special VLS torpedo, you can see how they can be done in Blue Planet or Esarai's Phoenix Rising frigate.
I assure you that the effect is absolutely awesome.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on January 08, 2011, 05:09:30 am
Well turret does complicate things more than a missile bank

VLS torpedo?  Also are BP's torpedos as deadly as WCs?
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Dragon on January 08, 2011, 05:16:49 am
Nope, they're firing in swarms and are much closer to FS balance, but you could make your VLS torpedo either fire one at a time, or have lower overall damage.
Guidance system is the most important thing about them, so you can change damage values, speed, turn time and other values unrelated to guidance as you like.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Droid803 on January 08, 2011, 01:00:15 pm
270 degree FoV, not 360.
360 has some issues with the missile trying to fly through the ship's own hull or something like that.
Unless you make the missile not able to turn fast enough to do that, then you get some funny circling sometimes.

Right, 270, 360 requires rather specialized ship design.
Also, I just found that Gilgamesh is a mess, turret firing points are off and there's something weird with LOD1.

Fixed, somehow the pre-fixed turrets (ones where the "firepoints" helper is incorrectly aligned) snuck into the model (the lasers and stormsfires, the rest were ok).  I'm sure this won't be the last time we hear from them.

The intakes on lod1 weren't xform reset so they were misaligned to.

Also fixed the table, one of the lasers was marked as tachyon.

Scooby doo, I hope you plan to integrate them with Wing Commander SAGA after it is released, of course.
They are just too good to remain without a proper home.

When I delete 5 ships then the other 5 ships, who missing are then in the List :(
That sounds a lot like your hitting the limits.

Hey, Scooby_Doo, can you add a Kilrathi carrier to the download list?    :)

-dcwarlord

I'm going to be updating those too (newer thrusters, which I've already finished).  There's a few other things (beyond textures) I want to do to make them look less human (like cockpits)

BTW, Scooby, did you thought about making a ship (loosely) based on this?
I'd love to see an A-10 style WC ship, with a heavy version of Stormfire on a chin mount and one heck of a missile load (you could also add a couple of lasers somewhere, so it won't be defenseless once out of ammo). It'd make a great fighter-bomber.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on March 12, 2011, 03:51:13 pm
I've got a few jet fighters on the assembly line (f-4, f-6 i think).  I'll see what I can do with the A-10 someitme.

Dragon, have you seen this (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTB_Thunderbolt) bomber? That's roughly based on the A-10 as well, though it's for the FreeSpace universe, not the Wing Commander one. I wouldn't mind seeing Scooby's take on it, too.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Dragon on March 13, 2011, 03:37:23 am
While I've seen Trashman's take on A-10, I'm not too fond of it. It's nowhere as good as Scooby's models.
Also, there's an oddity in Essex textures. There are 4 blue "panels" in the bottom aft section, but only 3 in top aft section.

Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)

Here you go:
http://scoobydoo.freespacemods.net/Tools/Ship_Logo_Template.psd

Mind you, all you really need to do is have a base texture and you can throw whatever text you want on it (it doesn't have to be a metal texture (it could be psychedelic) nor does the size matter as long as it's factor of 2.

Now the great big logo needs a photoshop script to complete it.  I'll have to get that released soon.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Dragon on March 20, 2011, 01:14:41 pm
I'd just like to use the same style of metal texture as the original.
And why does it have a big "Ship's name" on it?
Anybody who doesn't have Photoshop (or, in general, uses a much simpler editing program) may have a problem with removing it.
It's possible to easly get rid of it with GIMP, but it serves no purpose in it.

It has a mesh hole near the grate behind the top missile launcher (look at the top launcher from directly above the grate and you'll see).

There's also a bug in all the side mounted turrets... when you destroy them there's a very good chance the destroyed version won't show up.   The fix is easy at least.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)

Also on Enterprise, you made some typos in "Fvec" in turrets mounted on the slopes.

Ajax, athena, clysdale, Gilgamesh, hermes and hunter doesn't have odd angle turrets
Aurora is ok (info was already copied to the destroyed versions)

Diemos, Enterprise, Essex, Formidable, Gallileo and Jutland  needed a few fixes

Found another bug, turret firing points on Hermes are off.
Also, how did you fixed destroyed subobjects on side turrets?
Is that something that can be done in PCS2?
I'm asking, because I have edited versions of these models and I don't want to make all the edits again (global import won't do, since some of them are related to subobjects).

(EDITED)

I reckon a reduxed Piranha would look fantastic -- such a bad-ass fighter to pilot.  I recall seeing them in Secret Ops. Thought I had flown them before, but turns out I mistook it for the Vampire. It'll be great when your Sepecat Jaguar is finished -- looks like an incredibly well-executed upgrade to the Piranha design.

The original couldn't do this, as it was a 2D bitmap.  :)
SCP version will not do this untill engine supports such movement, but after that it could, if you wanted to depart from canon a little.
BTW, did you posted any WIPs of Warhammer anywhere? I wonder how does it look (since it's made from a nice concept art, plus the fact it's made by you, I think it most likely looks awesome  :) ).

Ditto on the opinion about them being amazing. I'd make a version of one myself if I wanted. But I'm too much of a fanboy when it comes to Kinetic Energy based weapons. Call that strange if you want. :P

I can think of many craft I'd want in my fighter force -- But heh, they aren't on the market yet. Either that or I can't make my mind up   :blah:

I think the Warhammer would be one of them though -- I'm almost certain of it.

Sorry, a typo. Fighterbay pathes.
It's fighterbay path seems to be named "Path18", instead of "Bay01". This will prevent it from launching any fighters. Not to mention there's only one, not enough for a carrier.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)

oh that... got that fix, but it should launch fighters one at a time, it's meant to be a pocket carrier.

I suppose I could add a fighterbay02 right behind figherbay01 or would they collide when they launched?

All the capships should have a similar blue coloring.  The capships and fighters use a different texture base and the capships don't really look that great with the lighter blue.

They're dropped after WC2 only to return in WCP.

Technically, I think, they were there in 3&4 but fighters had developed a strong enough punch to get through them.

Don't know if it's just me but most of the fighters are incredibly over-powered, at least when compared with retail fighters. Speed, shield, hull strength are monstrous.

If you're comparing it to Freespace, ya, whole different ball-game.  If you're comparing it to saga prologue, just remember there's a MASSIVE bump in strength between wc2 and wc3, and a large bump between wc4 and wc5. Now just add a large bump again.

Also some of the tables aren't that great, they're mostly templates. I've got so many models, the typical light, medium, heavy fightr versions just don't cut it.  Someday I'll go back and probably fix those.

There's been a small bug update for several of the models.  The rotating missile turret had some bad geometry that would cause lighting issues.

The models that got updated are (hopefully got them all)
Aurora
Enterprise
Formidable
Gilgamesh
Lancer

These are some great ships there, Scooby and many a fighter as well. Thanks a million.
One thing though. Will these be ready to load into WC:SAGA once released or will additional work be required? (on tables and such)
I don't mind either, I 'm just astonished at the campaign possibilities your ships combined with WC:SAGA's present and would like to know more.

Let's see..

There's one that will be required, it contains some of the common textures that saga doesn't use.  (Unless I get to include them with Saga)  [#1 on the list on the first topic]

One additional vp that contains some weapon entries from Prophecy era, it's a bit out of date and not required if you want to edit the ships tables, which I highly recommend doing anyways, seeing as I haven't had time to balance the ships hps/firepower/speed...etc out. [#2]

The other tables will be removed once saga fits final.  They are already out-of-date (stats have changed).

OK, now the civilian container is missing fighterbay subsystems and paths. Fighterbay container has paths, but they're pointing up for some reason. And it still doesn't have subsystems.
Also, MOI or dockpoint name is missing from some of these containers.

Working on a script to let you do pathing before you export the models.  Running into a few problems though.

edit: oh and the fighter hangers shouldn't have fighter bays, it's not a carrier, rather a transport.  i.e. you dock a fighter to it so that it remains visible.  Otherwise it'll look a bit odd when a fighter enters the hanger and disappears.

I just completely randomly decided to glance at this thread and saw the above, so... are you talking about maxscripts? If so, then I do happen to have a pile of scripts I use for setting up paths and subsystems and whatnot, some of which might be useful for you.

Ya, I think I got the scripts mostly working, except for a couple of parts, the first is a pcs2 import issue, which resolves itself when you reimport the data, and second I can't seem to get the path's property "Parent" to actually be imported.

Sure, I'll take a look at your scripts and see what I'm doing wrong.

Renamed it to "Nova", sounds better.  Next three on the list:

Nighthawk - the F-19 fake stealth fighter.  I first thought it was going to be an easy quick texture, but I was way wrong, needs quite a bit of clean up
Nimitz - One of my first carriers, needs extensive rework
Nova - renamed from the Neptune (sounds better), don't think i posted a pic of it yet, it's a cross between a Tallie/Savannah and a WC1 Fralthi

Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Dragon on March 07, 2012, 09:36:04 am
For some reason, you designated the Nova as a Strike Cruiser. The only thing that would support that designation is the number of CSM launchers. Other than that, it's small (about 1000m long) and has a rather weak secondary armament (with on Plasma turret, a few Particle ones and no Tachyons). I'd make it a Heavy Destroyer or a Light Crusier.
Also, the two Stormfire turrets on the "neck" are placed a bit strangely. And the main turret firepoints are off.

Oh, I just copied and pasted the Aurora's table  :p  I'll leave the detail spec's to whoever wants to use the models.

I got the feeling from how the engines are laid out that it should be fast.  It's a bit shorter, but I think it has more mass than the Aurora and definitely smaller than the Essex.  And surprisingly, it has more secondaries than the Aurora.  There's four tachyons, the center turrets on the four engine pods.  There should probably be one under the hanger, but the hanger floor is a bit too low to hide the internals of the turret.

1 heavy plasma
2 heavy particle
2 csm
2 missile launchers
4 tachyon
15 lasers
3 stormfires
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Dragon on March 07, 2012, 02:56:40 pm
There are indeed Tachyons on the bottom of the pods, but it's still lighter than the Aurora, which, while it has less secondary turrets, has 2 heavy plasma cannons and more anti-ship armament.

Apparently my capship texture tile size changed sometime ago.  I had to go back and update some of the models textures.  The actual pof file wasn't modified, it was 100x easier just to resize the texture tile than reuvmap it all.

The following models have updated textures:
Athena
Aurora
Enterprise
Essex
Formidable
Gallileo
Jutland
Lancer
Liberty
Nimitz
Nova

hopefully that's all of them, the other capships matched up with the Ajax tile size.

Firingpoints on it's bottom turrets are misplaced. Medusa and Hwatcha have the same problem (I'd suggest checking all ships with this particular turret model).
Also, the Hunter still has a texture error on it's front antennae. It'd be great if you could fix it.

Well, Scooby, technically a year just consists of "a few months". :D
The bad news is: Time seems to speed up the older you get. Shortly after my 28th birthday I met an old friend from school and he said "Man, we haven't met for some time, that must be 2 years or so" and (after I finally remembered his name) I realized that I last met him almost eight years ago... My Grandma swears that time is running at a factor of 4 now, compared to the 1950s.

So things are getting worse in general, but the good news is: Your models get even better than they already were!
Can you post some screenshots again when you complete new versions of your ships? Pleeaaase!!!

@Scooby: Well, if you are 38 already that explains why it seems to me that you are working very fast! You've adapted to the speed your time runs, and since it runs roughly 30% faster than mine does your apparent speed observed from my position is really high!  :D

As for the screenshots: Any type of screenshot showing what you are doing with your ships presently is great for me. :)

Btw: Have you ever thought of doing a WC2 Broadsword? That one would look totally badass when "scoobyfied" I think., perhaps a bit slimmer in the vertical axis than the one Howard Day did.... (Just an idea, not really a request. It is just that I don't like the WC2 designs that much except the versions you did :)  My dream: All WC ships scoobyfied so finally everything fits together in the WC-universe)

I agree. It is just like with Saga: If the quality is right I don't mind waiting, and Scooby's quality has always been great. :)
I'm not in a hurry, since for my mod and my campaign I only need ships that are already included in Saga. The rest is an extra that can be added any time.

i have the same issue too Scooby :-/

i got the full WC Saga mod, plus had downloaded the latest files you mentioned... those required and additional files and stuff

and the main body of the lancer is partly invisible with some bits in weird green textures less... areas i suppose...

anyways, the model doesn't look finished :-/

which is especially odd and puzzling because: all the gun turrets are fine, the hangar is fine, etc... and all the other capships i've downloaded like the Olympia, Nova, Jutlanc, etc. they all work fine

it really is only the Lancer :-/

My GTACa Nibelheim? It's retextured and returreted Tiger Claw made by Scooby Doo. There is a link on one of the first pages. As I know, it's still downloadable.

My GTACa Nibelheim?

That's part of my confusion. Why are you calling it that? No one knows what you are talking about. I tried to look up that name and only came up with a final fantasy reference.

I also was unable to find the Tiger Claw on this thread. Perhaps it is somewhere else? This is all I get with a general google search:

Ok, so after talking it over with Droid803 on irc I now understand that the Betrayal's GTACa Nibelheim is a returreted version of Droid803's CITCa Seljuk which is a retextured version of the Scooby's Tiger Claw.

Long as I have it all straight....

It's from old norse language. Nibel- means "sky", -heim mens "land" or something like that if I remember correctly. This class of carriers is light, fast and agile. Perfect for fast attacks to rock enemy's ass. I associated it with the skies, and I needed a name from old norse. I've never played final fantasy and didn't heard about any other Nibelheim than my carrier.

I think he was referring to why you call it what you do in your unreleased mod, using a name nobody has seen before rather than a name that someone could possibly find its source or something, more than anything else.

Just about done fixing the Formidable... is it just the gattling lasers (quad barrel) that's having this issue?

Edit: Done.  There's a few other things I'd like to someday get working: better shinemaps, bring glowmaps back,  useful glowpoints, some minor fixes on subsystem names and better tables.

Could you fix images in the first post? Half of them don't show up for me.
Also, the Formidable is not fixed. Gatlings are fine, but the rest of the turrets are still offset. And for some reason, normals on it's missile launchers are pointing sideways instead of forward.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on August 15, 2012, 03:28:51 pm
It's more than just the gattlings?   Yup your right, I'm going to see if I can write a script that automatically fixes this.  As for the missile turrets, not sure what is going wrong there, they look fine in pcs.

And script is done ya! Just select the entire turret and one mouse click and I'm done.

As for the pictures... i'm not sure what that is, they all show up for me. photobucket issue?

Not missile turrets, the SSM launchers. Also, I don't mean polygon normals, but firingpoint normals. Take a look at "turrets" tab in PCS2 and you'll see all the issues I'm talking about.

Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on August 15, 2012, 04:53:56 pm
Ya the base model for the launcher had the firepoints set wrong.  That propagated down to the ships, sometimes I just import the turrets from completed ships, inheriting the problem.  At least this fix is easy, just a quick edit to the pofs fixes it.  Its just a matter of me remembering to fix it before saving.

So what now? A string of "r" fighters? Raven sounds intriguing, but I already know the rest of them (doesn't make them any less awesome though).
Also, now that I look at it, the Predator could use front missile bays on the flat surfaces under the intakes. It's probably too late for that though.

I think I have the bays nearby.  I think I just choose the single bays to launch all the missiles.

R's:
My Rapier
Tiny rapier
Raptor
Raven
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/raven1.jpg)
Reaper
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/reaper1.jpg)

Last two need some considerable updates. My rapier will be based on my rapier version, the tiny rapier will be based on klav's version that was going to be used in saga, and the raptor needs MASSIVE amounts of work... in fact pretty much 100% redo.

I didn't meant underside bays. I meant front "launcher-style" bays. If you look on the Predator from the front, there's a rather big (about the size of the intakes), unaerodynamic flat surface that serves no purpose. Launchers like those on Cougar would fit there perfectly.

I took a close look at that section and this would be a good idea. It'd streamline the ship somewhat, make it looks a bit less like a kitbash (the Avenger isn't too obvious, but still noticeable).

Rapier mk 3 added... next up.. the tiny rapier which will also need a name.
Also didn't  realize the pulse particle was a rapid fire gun, oh well, i'm sure you will want to change that to whatever you want.

Edit: Actually Katana is next... but on another note.. opps I've just noticed that the texture space sizes vary from ship to ship.  Although about the only time you'd really notice it was if you put something like a bearcat right next to a centaur, the panel bolt would appear much larger on the centaur.

Could you re-add the shark decal? I think it looked good. Also, I noticed that textures 2 and 3 are identical. I think you could optimize the texturing somewhat, reduce the texture count to 2.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on February 11, 2013, 02:39:25 pm
Well I could re-uvmap it but it would still need three textures.  This was the far easier solution   I must have uvmap/textured it before I was aware of the normal symmetry issue.  So what I did was take the starboard side of the main hull (the part that's symmetrically connected) and have it use texture #3, which gives it a seperate uvspace, so it's all good.

I'll readd the jaws.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Dragon on February 11, 2013, 03:01:07 pm
If you can't make the ship use only two texture slots, could you reassign (in PCS2) the second texture so that it's used on both 2nd and 3rd slot? That could save some memory.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on February 11, 2013, 09:57:29 pm
I think it's more of a uvspace map problem than a diffuse map texture problem.  The other alternative is to cut the model down the middle and don't weld the center line vertices together.  However this would cause shine/smoothing issues.  It's a win-lose preposition.

Also, uploaded the jaw decal file.  It contains the textures needed for it.

Scimitar (needs massive makeover)

Shrike (nearly good to go)

Well it was based off of someone's....I believe someone did a model dump which I got it from.

Without any unforseen problems, the sargota won't take too long, scimitar will take some time (basically needs 100% redo and the seagull needs a redo with considerably more detail (and also... "seagull"  i think it needs a better name LOL)  The cap ship texturing is considerably faster than fighters, a lot less detailing work.  But for right now I'm getting a good version of the Blade ready for final work.

Fixed that. I copied and pasted from the black widow and forgot to finish modifying it.

Hmm weird, auto-path didn't make one for the docking point.  Ahh found the problem, posting updated model.

Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Mad Bomber on April 18, 2013, 11:10:32 pm
Side note for anyone using the model, there's a second issue. Subsystems are placed oddly. Normally this wouldn't matter, except this means the Javelin can't lock onto the Scimitar correctly because the engine subsystem is buried on the underside.

Fortunately this is easily correctable in PCS, so no big deal.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)

Ya... the subsystems are rather generic.  I just put the basic ones in and let who-ever wants it to modify it.

I've noticed an oddity in fighter textures:
(http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/1341/comparisoni.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/402/comparisoni.png/)
Your earlier fighters are noticeably brighter and have more pronounced riveting than new ones. This makes them stand out next to your new ones. Also, they seem to use less textures on average (4 per fighter is a bit much, yet it seem to be the current standard. Early ones had 2-3 textures). Is that intentional? If not, would you be able to do something about it?

Weird.. hmm I must have added some detailing features sometime down the road.
Well it looks like the change happened back with the foxbat.

The uvmapping is a problem some of the models have a different uv area. ugh

edit: also looks like i modified the base texture to make it darker.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Dragon on April 19, 2013, 05:27:59 pm
Could you fix it? It's a lot of fighters, but seeing how quickly you fixed a somewhat similar issue with capships, something tells me you can at least partially automate this. A consistent look across the fleetpack is something I really like.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on April 19, 2013, 06:04:34 pm
Ya I've already got a script, it just takes some time.  The uv scaling issue isn't really fixable without redoing the entire model.  The biggest offenders for this are the extra large fighters and extra small fighters.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Dragon on April 19, 2013, 06:08:45 pm
I guess I'll have to live with inefficient UV mapping. Good to hear about the textures though.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on April 19, 2013, 10:49:16 pm
Actually some of it isn't inefficient, some of the models just have more surfaces.

Take for example, the bearcat and the confed banshee..
Both are similar sized (banshee is bulkier). The uvmapping area size is the same (i've tried to keep all fighters the same size).  The bearcat takes two textures, banshee 4.

I think the amount of surface area plus the general geometry of that area determines how effectively I can work.  long thin stripes and small pieces can be squeezed into tiny areas, whereas big huge chunks (like wings) tend to be more fussy (they either fit or simply don't)  On some of the fighters there was just a small amount that just couldn't fit into any existing texture and  using a second one would have been pointless, so i cheated and shrunk it down a bit.  No sense in including a nth texture and not even 1/4th used.

Also I've just noticed something else, the panels themselves have gotten smaller and more numerous
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/corrected.jpg)
ugh and photobucket strikes again  :hopping:

Let me attach it to this thread directly.

Hmm, they're still very noticeably different. The panel lines on the Demon are not only less dense, but also much more pronounced.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on April 20, 2013, 06:47:37 am
Ohhh i think I found the reason why they're more pronounced... apparently a year or two ago I changed the size the of the panel lines down to 1px. (don't ask me why.. i have no clue)
I might have somewhat of a fix for that.  It's not quite like the originals, but I kinda like it better.  The darkness can be adjusted
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/corrected2.jpg)

As for the number of panels,  there's just too many to go back and redo at least for now.
And yes I have no clue why the blues seem to be darker on the banshee's wings compared to the demons wings and the other parts of the banshee. It could be just the location on the base metal texture.

Looks fine, I think. Much better than before, the blue stripe color difference is odd, but not that visible unless you specifically look for it.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on April 20, 2013, 05:42:00 pm
Yup it's the base texture color, the left side is a bit darker than the right side.  It's not normally noticeable if you go from left to right or right to left, but when you immediately jump from one side to the other it's obvious.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Mad Bomber on April 20, 2013, 08:33:05 pm
The color's different on various fighters. Epee has red/green, Sabre has a dark turquoise, Thud has purple, and Excalibur has red go-faster stripes.

And who can forget the famous "bright green + French flag" coloration of the Broadsword?  :p

So there's canon precedent for varying hues. Not a problem.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Scooby_Doo on April 21, 2013, 01:13:06 am
Also I've fixed a couple of things, and realized one of my fixes broke other things (don't worry that only effects the source files not the dds)  Basically there's two big groups "bumped"  and "nonbumped", unfortunately automation doesn't know "bumped" rather "layer 123" which tends to differ from texture to texture.. ugh. I'll just have to do it manually.

Improved the shine map, I just opted to use the one that was used for saga rather than the colorful placeholder one I made.  Normal mapping also got improved, more details are now actually visibility bumped. Those two were easy compared to the problem.

Fixed and added your suggestion, that solves the placement of the third cannon.  Also there may be more models that have the missing texture on the stormfire.  It looks like it was from several years ago so the original problem may have been solved, but not all it's descendants.  Dunno, it was just a texture number got changed (submaterial 3 instead of sub 1)

I have this crap with almost every model equipped with intakes [I tested Deimos, Spectre, Aurora and Nimitz], and while all of the intakes are listed in ships.tbl, debug is still nagging. How to fix this? Table entries for the intakes are the same, as in original table file.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Talon 1024 on December 16, 2013, 09:28:51 am
There is no way to fix that, other than removing the intakes from the model and the tables.

It's not really a problem anyway, at least as far as I know. Those messages just mean that FSO doesn't know what to do with those subsystems, or what kind of functionality to associate with them.
Title: Re: Christmas 2010 Model Re-release (image heavy)
Post by: Nyctaeus on December 16, 2013, 09:46:03 am
As I know, the engine doesn't have to know what to do with custom subsystems. If they don't have any specific role, like awacs or something, they should be just destroyable parts of the model.

Anyway, they actually disappeared when I changed this:
Code: [Select]
$Subsystem: intake01, 10, 0
$Flags: ("untargetable")
To this:
Code: [Select]
$Subsystem: Intake01, 10, 5.0
$Flags: ("untargetable")
:D

Tallahasse Mk 3 has been added.  Sorry about the massive delay, my personal life just got walloped a good one and I kinda lost interest in everything. Its going to take some time getting everything back to normal. In fact I think it's going to take quiet some time, until someone realizes how ****ty of a relationship they're in... but I digress.

I'm sure there's a few bugs in the Talla... I've forgotten a few things in the last few months... oh and I see Imageshack is no longer free LOL.

Bummer. Shame it's not going well for you. I love your models, every single one is a great piece of art.
I hope you get everything sorted out quickly. I was kind of excited for Talon and a new Thunderbolt, but I can wait, no worries.
As for Tallahasse, it's a lovely ship. The only bug I noticed so far are missile launcher normals pointing up instead of forward. Not hard to fix, I guess.
Oh, and Imageshack's gone to dogs, yes. Time to switch the image host, I guess...
