Title: R1 By this summer?
Post by: FreespacePilot2010 on March 23, 2011, 08:09:44 pm
Yep its another post asking when will the mod ever be released.    But id like to really know your best guesstimate as to when you truly think youll have r1 up.    I highly doubt it but is there a chance it will be up this summer?    Also I was thinking you might want to have a thread that shows progress percentage of the mod.    Like by showing how much percent of the models, textures, and scripting is done. No. There is no way to predict release dates until very close to release because it is very hard to know how fast tasks will go.

When voice acting gets going, take that as a sign that release is closing in.

Post by: FreespacePilot2010 on March 23, 2011, 08:42:08 pm
Thats what I thought someone would say.

But again could you at least put up a thread with the amount of progress done?

Example:
Modeling-%80 done
Textures-%60 done
Scripting-%30 done
Voice Work-%0 done

What are those percentages supposed to mean? How would they tell anyone anything? If they don't map to how much time is left (they won't), why even bother, especially when they mean waves of nagging that they're not moving fast enough?

I'm sure tutta can post some links to studies, graphs and charts addressing the direct relationship between nagging and time spent by the Dev Team addressing nagging rather than developing.

Sorry.    I just figured it might help to let people exactly how much is finished.    Ive seen charts like that for lots of other mods so I thought you might want to do one too. SPAAAAAACE!!1 --Jeff

I doubt any of them were at all effective at conveying how much time was left until release.

I'm still at a loss why people ask this sort of question even though we have repeatedly stated that we don't know ourselves and therefore can't guess.

Since you seem to believe you can take a guess when critical project members will be too busy to work on the game and when they'll have time, why don't you tell us when our release date is FreespacePilot?

I've got no problem with saying what we have done and what we are doing. We do things like that. The dev blog is entirely made up of things like that. But asking for guesses of things that we can't guess is pointless and we've flat out said why several times before.

What happens to your maths if you take 500 days to finish the project, newman? Hmm? Will the universe asplode? Or will you just sweep it up under the carpet of "beyond standard deviation"?

No need for the extra numbers.Rounded ones will do just fine thanks.Plus im not trying to be a math Nazi but in percentages your supposed to use periods. Not commas.

Also, using periods for decimal places is more of an US system whereas commas are more often used in Europe. Since I'm not from the US or live there, I'm just fine with commas - FraktuRe and FreespacePilot, please keep your math Nazism confined to the US. :P

Europe is a continent made up of many countrys that are on the surface of the planet Earth.Of course I know Europe isnt a country.

Then may I perhaps suggest you apply that knowledge when you post, rather than shoehorn all of Europe into one category and assume they all do things the same way, as you did in your previous post? You might know better, but you posted as if you didn't. And so I called you on it.

Also. Aside from the fact that you were contradicting a European on how things are done in Europe (which is... unwise. They live there, so they tend to know how things work at least for their own corner of the continent), generalisations are, as a rule, a bad idea. Especially in the area of punctuation :p Seriously. Scholars can spend months arguing over what's proper when it comes to that, and no consensus will be found.

We prefer to think of it as Half Life 2: Episode 3, actually. Way cooler. Besides, DNF actually has a (admittedly mobile) release date.

going to get released but were just not sure when.

I just cut out your post to the relevant and correct bit. The above statement is 100% correct, and one we've been repeatedly saying since day 1 :)
The difference between us and DNF or any commercial game is the fact that we're 100% volunteer based free project. While paying fans might feel entitled to demand release dates, we on the other hand can't know our release date (and believe me we'd love to), nor would we really owe it to anyone even if we did (which, as I just stated, we don't). It'll be out when it's out. If it were just up to me we'd be out already - but that's not how it works, unfortunately.

:D How about this. Set us all up with ample office facilities, all the hardware that goes with it, adequate monthly pay, and all the other stuff that goes with it - retirement plan, health insurance, etc. Then find a way to make Universal sell us the BSG license rights and cover the expenses. Without this us receiving any sort of money would result in bad, bad things.
Do all that and you'll get your release date. For now though we're just a band of volunteers that work whenever they have time/feel like it. Pretty impossible to predict anything that way :)

Very well since we last talked (about 6 hours ago) I managed to find a quarter in addition to my dollar o dimes. This brings my current capital for this venture to $1.25. With this I have started a company, and am proud to announce Drow Co. Since you will be getting in on the ground floor of this enterprise I am willing, and able, to offer an amazing salaried  Jr partner position of about 2,200 dollars a year, unluckily at this rate I will only be able to hire you for about 3 hours as that will use $0.75 dollars of my starting capital, and I need the other $0.50 for the stamps to send you the money.

However as a Jr. Partner in Drow Co. you will be entitled to stock options, which can be taken in place of payment. My accountant (the other guy in the grocery line) say "That is a crazy idea!" But you know how crazy ideas are often crazy enough to work! So I have taken the liberty of putting the $1.25 into the revenue of the company and then putting the company onto the stock exchange, with a Million shares. You will get 25% of these shares. This means your starting bonus will be $0.000005 which is admittedly not very much. Howevery we are a fast growing company. As I have stated in the last 6 hours I have increase our revenue 25% at this rate the company will be worth $536,870,912 by this time next month, and $134,217,728 of that will be yours. I believe that this is well worth it.

As far as offices go I can get you a corner office in a carboard box by the end of the week, this should provide adequate work space for a desk and chair, and since I will be connecting to your office (has a nice ring to it doesn't it?) to a local street light you can have all of the power that you want. As for hardware recently a local school upgraded to a new computer lab and is willing to give us all of their old computers, this means that you can have up to 20, relatively, new computers.

Healthcare at Drow Co. is second to none (well none is less than what we offer). Our medical is currently rather small, we practice preventative medicine so we can offer you a bar of soap and some running water courtesy of a local stream. There are many published studies about how clean hands reduce sick leave of employees, which means they are healthier. And so far not one employee has gotten sick, which I think speaks volumes about our healthcare plan. We also offer a dental package, what we do is if you have a problem with a tooth we find a piece of string a friendly looking door and we rip the problem right out!

Instead of retirement we offer company housing. By acquiring a few more cardboard boxes I have set up a small, 5 building, apartment complex in a local park. Your next door neighbor will be Carl. He is a bit of an odd man, what missing an eye and has multiple personality disorder, but he is very kind hearted according to the lady at the soup kitchen (where I picked him up). He does also have a bit of a temper and tends to stab things in his sleep. Still I feel that you will soon become best of friends. Also he is your landlord.

The only thing that my company does not provide is moving expenses. But I know that is but a paltry sum as compared to the one-hundred and thirty-four thousand dollars that you will be making next month. (see beginning of letter for details)

I expect to see your acceptance letter soon, and I know that you will be a great addition to the team.

~~Sincerely
CEO,
Master_Drow

As much as I just like, yes siree, even love those terms, you still haven't secured licensing rights from Universal, so I'm afraid we'll have to decline this undoubtedly fantastic offer. I'm afraid we'll have to stick with the original plan, which consisted of doing things when we can and beating anyone who asks for an ETA with a point-headed stick.

This is when I usually think that it would be great if I, or any other forum user, would win a lottery.

Of course, if one of us did, I'm also pretty sure that FS2 open would not be in their priority list of wild spending

I don't think it would help much. Developing games is big business and you have to remember we can't even make a profit on the game due to the SCP licence.

Donating it to help keep HLP running isn't a bad idea though.

Its just that all of Europe uses the metric system so I put 2 and 2 together and figured all European countries must use decimals.I also hope you dont use commas in the game when showing ship damage.
In Soviet Finland (and perhaps other countries as well), people put a whitespace after a punctuation mark when another sentence follows.

Example: I am writing sentences<PUNCTUATION MARK><WHITESPACE>This is another sentence<PUNCTUATION MARK>

Or in another format: I am writing sentences. This is another sentence.

Not entirely accurate - the UK still uses the Imperial system for certain applications, even though the EEC rabidly tries to stamp it out, and the whole of the EU use the Imperial system rather than metric for aviation and shipping navigation purposes.  In fact, EU countries weather reports for aviation even use a mix of the systems, reporting wind speeds and cloud bases in Imperial but visibility in metric.  Russia uses a complete metric system and the US use a complete Imperial system, so it is the EU who again have the most illogical, muddled and clumsy solution due to petty minded bureaucrats and politicians...

the whole of the EU use the Imperial system rather than metric for aviation and shipping navigation purposes.
It does not.
What is used is a third, "nautical" system, similar to Imperial, but not identical.
It's used because it's tailored to match with geographical coordinates, 1 nautical mile = 1 minute of latitude on the equator (off by about 12 meters, but it's not important in navigation).
Same with (much less known) nautical feet (one second of latitude on the equator), which are also used in aviation. And knots = nautical miles per hour.
This system is simply practical for navigation (especially for working with charts) and does borrow names from the Imperial system, because it evolved from it.
I don't know why visiblity is given in meters, but most likely because pilots "think" in meters in everyday life and it's easier to imagine how far you'll be able to see if the value isgiven in meters. There, convinence when working with charts in not a factor.

The EU uses feet for altitude measurement and met reports of cloud base, so it's critical for navigation with different airfields having different elevations,, obstacles and terrain, separation from other aircraft  and the layering of airspace .    As for pilots thinking in metres, that'd only apply to those raised on the continent and the youngest of the Brits - the older Brits still think in feet and yards and have to convert the met readings or runway distances.   The eastern Europeans use metres/second for wind reports, though, not knots.

As for knots and the definition of a nautical mile, I know what they are, thanks.  They're only used in air navigation because they were used in maritime navigation, just like so many other maritime conventions carried over into aviation, and are now used because they're what has always been used and there is little reason to change it; the relationship between one minute of latitude and 1nm is not of much benefit really.
Title: Re: R1 By this summer?

You obviously had to calculate something using a real nav chart. Using miles makes geometry a lot easier.
Maritime convensions have been carried over to aviation, since both of them have to navigate large distances and have much more in common than most people think.
Also, "people raised on continent" is most of Europe population, last time I checked, so for majority of pilots, distances in meters are convinent.
On the side note, I don't think that Diaspora forum is a place for such conversations.

Firefly was a great series that should have ran much longer than just the events of the movie.
It was a great concept too.

For the record I'm still here and lurk every month or so, finally got a civil response via pm from a dev who doesn't suffer from unwarranted self importance, obviously not under this name and behind 7 proxys. Also kinda lost interest since even if this does ever release it will probably be 3 years from then before the next chapter gets released but hey it's free and free is either **** quality, or good quality (like this) but takes forever. I realize that now and nowadays play what I consider 'the best' games released NOW rather than waiting for something AWESOME (Jumpgate Evolution/Infinity Universe anyone?) but will probably never come. Until closed beta has started and the game is playable there is no point marking your calander, hope you learn from my mistakes. These folks probably have a job and family IRL and does this only as a casual hobby, spending less time on it than we spend on our fav mmo so yes it will take a loooong time. I know cos I made mods before and worked with casual 'on the weekend' studios, and stuff never gets done or gets done and then lack of updates for anything less than a professional, dedicated effort. Not saying that is wrong but at least say it up front instead of crpytic 'we don't know'. Of course you don't know because you have a life.
Oh and not going to say too much (for fear someone may get in trouble with actually talking to me), but release window was supposedly 'in a matter of months' and not 'years' however don't get your hopes up that was a loooong time ago, talked sometime last year.

TL;DR
Don't get excited over the distant future, plenty of great games to play now, tomorrow's games will always be awesome but when you finally get it, something more awesome will be in the pipe. Chill, probably a hobby project between a group of 30somethings with a job and kids, something many of us probably will never understand. Why tie yourself up and be a slave to some 'family' I will never understand. Gamer4lyfe

For the record I think we've been quite clear from the get go that "we don't know" is part and parcel of this being hobby project for those involved and our bandwidth being subject to the demands of real life.  In fact it says so right in the FAQ (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56783.0) which has been posted since this project was made public, so really accusing us of "cryptic" is a disingenuous assertion.  Secondly you don't need to be thirty something with kids to have social, avocational, and occupational responsibilities besides video games.

Well then, I'm sure you can wait 10 years for this.

And my guess is that this will take a year more at least to come out, if it ever does. And R2 will probably take another year. We haven't seen a decent progress report in ages, and I assume that is because it is a busy time of year and this IS a hobby project and there is no real dedication beyond just doing it for fun, wish you said so from the start.

The only thing that pisses me off is *insert dev here*'s high and mighty USI attitude, but judging by reading old posts I'm not the only one. But hey every forum has one mod that thinks they are above the common member.

And newman, you're a nice guy (by comparison), but yea "it's done when it's done" doesn't mean anything, neither are the other over 9000 ways of saying it. Why not just say 'not in the next year' in the FAQ instead?

What pisses me off is idiots who can't be bothered to read the FAQ, repeatedly ask us the same question over and over again and then months later spout the information in the FAQ back at us as if they've somehow discovered the answer to some great mystery.

They're the WORST!

The team basically consists of volunteers who are giving up our spare time in order to produce a game. Since we can't work on it full time it's very hard to make estimates. If someone important to the team gets busy with real life commitments things can slow down. They always pick up again eventually, but we can't give any predictions for when the game will be completely done.

However since we are planning on having episodic releases, as as we get close to completion on each one we will be able to give rough estimates for how long it might take us to get the next release out.

Any estimate would be a best guess and would be subject to refinements and revisions depending on how much work is getting done and if we've hit any snags.
Lol did you folks change it? Anyway maybe add 'not in this year and probably not the next' to it?

Why do you think you're still here? If we banned people for disagreeing or being annoying you'd have been banned a long time ago. Your ban will come one month after release when you fail to release a campaign for Diaspora like you said you could. :p

Yes, all the work so far has been just to lead people along. That was the entire purpose. Team Diaspora would also like to apologize to all fans with a pronounced sense of entitlement for not quitting our jobs and other rl responsibilities in order to deliver a product we clearly owe you.
But all the hard work is so totally worth it when another someone with a pronounced sense of entitlement comes in and makes quick sarcastic quips about us not being as fast as they'd like. Because we've always hidden the fact that we don't really know when the eta will be, and we really deserve nothing but public scorn for not providing them with what they want the instant they want it. In fact, there never really was a game. It was all a ruse designed to lead people along, and it would have worked - but we didn't count on the astute mind of Detective Entitled here.

I'm not going to argue as to be honest I've lost a bit of interest since the btrl days.  Of course my leading on comment wasn't an accusation of all this being a joke, I am simply taking issue with some of the language used on here after the breakup with btrl.  Given the fact that at the time btrl had been around for years and a demo which looked (to me at least) like a finished mod short of a few missions had been released, I don't think it was unreasonable to assume that when Kara said soon, he expected people would be thinking in the time frame of months not years.   I would guess many on here feel that both Kara and you knew it was nowhere near ready but was happy to fib to keep peoples interest up.

Fair play to you, best to have an active message board rather than an empty one but don't get all defensive and snotty when you face the occasional moan from here.

Your moaning at volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! If you were working on something that was entirely optional would you really appreciate people *****ing at you as if you somehow owe them something? Yes, all the work so far has been just to lead people along.

Let's be honest, though. It really is. That's why you release anything before the final product; it's why we get screenshots and movies and shots of WIP models and anything else. You're leading us on. Harmlessly, perhaps even beneficially since our continued enthusiasm is hopefully infectious, but it really is what's happening.

You could have just gone silent after the split from BtRL and disappear from the public eye and then a year or two from now suddenly Diaspora. But you didn't. You wanted, or at least were accepting of, the attention of the public. So at least own to what you're doing, even if it's not in the context you're being accused of.

You wanted, or at least were accepting of, the attention of the public. So at least own to what you're doing, even if it's not in the context you're being accused of.

How do you think we'd recruit new talent if we did that? You've probably forgotten but for the first few months Diaspora was completely silent. Very few people outside the team knew we even existed. We'd have been quite happy to be silent if we had the entire team to make the game in a reasonable time. We didn't. Our entire sound department with the exception of two (currently inactive) composers consists of people who heard of the project thanks to those videos and screenshots.

Several people who had left BtRL and were impossible to track down only got back in contact with us because we weren't silent. Hell, Starslayer had vanished a while before the break up. Without his reappearance we wouldn't have the Theseus or MK VIIe in R1.

The decision to go public was always driven by the fact that we desperately needed new blood. Hell, we still do. We have enough people to get the game out but one of the main reasons things have taken so long is because the art department is seriously understrength and our initial internal ETA wild-arse guesses assumed we'd be able to recruit at least a few modellers.

I won't deny that the main objective of the WIP stuff is to drum up interest in the game but you're completely wrong if you think that's just so we can lead people on. The main reason is so we can say "Here's the great game we're working on. Come help us if you can!" The side effect is that we do get other people interested in the game and we're not unhappy about it. But it was never the main goal.

Given the fact that at the time btrl had been around for years and a demo which looked (to me at least) like a finished mod short of a few missions had been released, I don't think it was unreasonable to assume that when Kara said soon, he expected people would be thinking in the time frame of months not years.

Given the fact that at the time btrl had been around for years so did we. :p

The simple fact is that the Diaspora team completely underestimated the scale of the task that we had ahead of us. That much should be obvious from the one and only time we gave a release estimate. We've learned our lesson since then and we don't give estimates when we don't have any sensible way of working out how long something will take.

Although the BtRL demo was released we can't use everything from the demo. We aren't the same team. We had to rebuild quite a lot of stuff. The entire BtRL interface is completely unusable for instance. We have to rebuild it. Some models were over 3 years old at the time of the split and would look hideously ugly in the game with all the newer stuff. Despite that I still think we're working more quickly than we did on BtRL after the demo came out.

You will start hearing estimates eventually. Once we enter the beta period we'll certainly be able to narrow it down to the exact quarter we'll be releasing (and probably further than that). At the very least if we delay then we can say exactly what the issue holding us up is. Right now we can't because there are too many of them and it just sounds like boring whining if I say what the problems are. :D

I would guess many on here feel that both Kara and you knew it was nowhere near ready but was happy to fib to keep peoples interest up.

Nope. Didn't lie at all. As I explained before we really did think we could get it out soon. It's very easy to underestimate how much work remains on a project like this. Especially as Diaspora is much bigger than the BtRL demo and requires a lot more stuff in it's final form before release.

Quote

Don't moan. Just ask politely for information. We're trying to make sure that we're always approachable and easy to talk to. When people ask us questions that aren't in the FAQ we're more than happy to answer them (or at least say why we can't).

What pisses us off is when people tell us we should give up more of our free time or spend less time with our loved ones because they want to play a computer game. People who want to get the game more quickly could do some promotional work. Mention it on other sites you visit when you see "What Games Are You Looking Forward To" threads. Cause getting us the extra developers we need will speed up development.
But if you are the sort of person not willing to lift a finger to help, what exactly gives you the right to moan?

Same way Spoon did making WoD. Accept the constraints placed on you by a lack of personnel, aim a little lower, take longer, build it anyways. Recruit quietly if you really, really, have to. It could and has been done.

Regardless, you're not disputing my point. You're disputing why you've done it. Nothing said here actually contradicts that you're leading people on. (If anything it casts you in a worse light than I did since you're leading them on to make them work.)

You're basically just arguing for the sake of arguing, grabbing at semantics and pretty much irrelevant points which can be viewed as accurate from a certain POV. Congratulations, they're accurate from that certain POV. Even then the point of "leading on" is wrong because a) we never changed any of the images or videos in post, short of normal video editing when stitching sequences together, so we accurately represented what the game will look like, and b) we never hid the fact that we don't really know how long the game will take - apart from that one time we attempted to give out an eta which was badly miscalculated. Our mistake, so sue us.
Point irrelevant, moving on; since this isn't a commercial project but pretty much a labor of love, we'd much rather do the game exactly the way we want to however long it takes. If we're guilty of the heinous crime of not providing a short bsg fix to random fans the instant they wanted it, so be it - I can live with that. I'd much rather deliver something awesome that took longer, I pretty much hate rushed out games. Since we don't have a marketing department, we don't have to rush anything.
The point is moot, anyway; the art department finished most of what was required (with a few missiles and the main interface still needing work) and the ball's pretty much in other department's fields to get R1 out at this point (This doesn't mean we don't need more hands in the art department, as we still intend to do further releases after r1, and the more people we have the shorter it will take)
Long story short, I do believe we have the right to determine how our hobby project will look and play like and how long will it take on our own. It's openly free and openly doesn't have an ETA. People can see what it will look like and based on all that they can join up or not. If that's leading on, then ok we're leading people on. Personally I'm tired of people who keep complaining that we're not fast enough giving them a free game we clearly owe them. Whoever has complaints, again, sue us or go read a book. We should be done by the time you're done :P

tl;dr - I refer you all to Battuta's post a bit earlier.

Same way Spoon did making WoD. Accept the constraints placed on you by a lack of personnel, aim a little lower, take longer, build it anyways. Recruit quietly if you really, really, have to. It could and has been done.

There's a problem with that. Namely, WoD relies rather heavily on FS2 and MediaVP assets. As we want Diaspora to be playable by people who don't have FreeSpace 2, or might even never have heard of it, we can't do that. Remember, only the source code is free - The FS2 art assets (including the interface) are all still under copyright.

Then there's the fact that we can't really go for a cartoony look like WoD could and still hit the proper feel and atmosphere of BSG, which means we can't save modeling/texturing time like Spoon could. Now, Spoon managed to make WoD a completely awesome experience, but that doesn't mean those methods would automatically translate well into a BSG-themed mod/TC/game.

And we want to hit the right feel. We'd rather take a lot longer and get it right than do an early release of something that doesn't feel right or doesn't deliver the things we want it to. We could do the latter right now - It's perfectly playable. But it isn't where we want it to be. And no amout of arguing is going to change our minds on that.

Looks like kara is gettin defensive. Also, he still hasn't admitted he's doing this for the attention and probably likes the epeen his own forum gives for a project he actually doesn't care too much about.
No, seriously, why does he have to flame down anyone who disagrees with him? I'm pretty sure OP didn't start with "HAI KARA WHY AINT THIS DONE YET YOU USELESS PIECE OF ****."

Basically, whenever someone says something bad about you or something you REALLY don't like, you just call in your old buddies and invoke rule of postcount thinking just cos you're mods and have been here longer, you are above others. If a regular member behaved like you TO you, don't think he'd evade the banhammer for long.

Also instead of completing what was already well on the way (BTRL), you had to start your own, FROM SCRATCH. Come on that old guy is probably gone for good, and he wasn't the only one there. Totally nothing stopping you from calling a majority vote, kicking him out and continuing it. But yea prolly epeen reasons and also maybe you "didn't want to have anything to do with your competitor" but no idea how the powerplay ended there. Too many powerful and egoistic people on one project and it came down with a big frakkin crash I guess. Reminds me of how those 2 old goofs were always fighting back on the Galactica.

O man now I really pissed him off. Gotta run!!!

I laugh at how wrong IronForge managed to be on almost every line of his post. Even about pissing me off.

Only one thing in the entire post is actually worth replying to though.

Also instead of completing what was already well on the way (BTRL), you had to start your own, FROM SCRATCH.

Nope. Not from scratch. That much should have been obvious to anybody. We got a hell of a lot of stuff that was from BtRL. I pointed that out in my last post.

Same way Spoon did making WoD. Accept the constraints placed on you by a lack of personnel, aim a little lower, take longer, build it anyways. Recruit quietly if you really, really, have to. It could and has been done.

It would have taken a lot longer though and it would have cost us a hell of a lot of stuff that in the end we did get from BtRL.

More importantly though it would have resulted in a lower quality game when we did release. We're not doing that just because some people fail to understand that mods do take a lot of time to make and frequently release WIP shots years before they are finished.

Regardless, you're not disputing my point. You're disputing why you've done it. Nothing said here actually contradicts that you're leading people on. (If anything it casts you in a worse light than I did since you're leading them on to make them work.)

Actually it does. Leading people on has the connotation of us promising things we don't intend to deliver. That's not in the slightest bit true. We've always tried to point out that we are hard pressed to make estimates due to pressures you already should be pretty aware of.

Did you seriously just ride in on your fixie to tell everyone that projects that are public before release most defs have no cred and should stay underground?  I'm sorry if it makes us try hards but we wouldn't have nearly half our team, myself included, if Diaspora was flying completely under the radar.  I had had enough of BTRL and it was literally on a whim that I bothered to visit HLP and realize there had been a split and that Diaspora existed.  I very much doubt we would even have the resources to ever release without the influx of new members thanks to the promotional material we release.

So as someone who actually works on a development team with Spoon, this made me laugh and laugh and laugh. Spoon has been happy to get publicity and has recruited a number of modelers and staff members through outreach and previews. He's even asked me to do more publicity so he can get more talent.

What a weird, stupid thing to think about creativity.

Of course, the fact that he chose to do most of his publicity work over IRC did have something to do with this whole "out of nowhere" feel WoD had.

My god, this is simply put; embarrassing. IronForge, your posts simultaneously make me cringe and gag when I read them. Terrible show, I must say. Please, for the love of god will you grow up and stop being such a spoilt brat, your embarrassing yourself and making me feel ill.

I have been lurking these forums for quite a long time now; I am always overwhelmed and impressed beyond belief when I just browse through he screenshots etc. (excuse me for sounding all gushing here) I have always found it to be so remarkable how humans creativity has no bounds, in the pursuit of a media which expresses their creative outlets coupled with their interests. This project to me is a dream come true to say the least, when i finished watching BSG, I needed more, I wanted to be immersed in an experience where it was me flying along side the bucket and the beast. I almost couldn't believe it when I found out about diaspora! This has to be one of the most ambitious, beautifully awe inspiring projects I have ever followed.

It upsets me to see you self-absorbed, selfish, i-think-the-team-owes-me-this-project, trash talk the devs
And try to make them feel bad about something they shouldn't. Honestly, do you people have nothing else to do to pass the time?

Devs, your doing a fantastic job, you take all the time you need. Dont allow these imbeciles to bait your tempers. They do NOT speak for the rest of us.

So say we all.

What I am going to do is ask a simple question of the devs;

For someone who can't help you guys in any technical way what so ever, but wants to help some how, what type of things could we do to assist you guys?

Unfortunately, not much.
If you're good at voice acting, you could send samples and stand by till we hit beta.
Otherwise, if you hang around places that have people with skills important to us, you could try mentioning us and pointing them our way. Note that this does not mean that we want you to go creating random accounts on other forums just to advertise us - we pretty much hate spamming and wouldn't resort to it to advance our cause.
Or in short, if you can get the word out about us without spamming, that would be great as it might lead to recruitment, which ultimately leads to faster development.

It's fishing for an ETA. He still thinks we have a secret eta you need to know the secret handshake to get a hold of, and he's trying to estimate it by giving his own estimates and seeing how we react. It's rather obvious and I find the idea he thinks he's being subtle about it cute :)

Title: Re: R1 By this summer?

We generally don't post concepts until we have the model in-game. We've actually had our designs pop up in other places without any credit to Starslayer after the last time we did that during BtRL days.

Trust me, the Theseus isn't the most awesome thing he's designed for us, it's simply the first thing we needed.

So far we've focused on getting R1 ships done so no Taurus yet. I'm going to get started on post R1 assets as soon as I can, so far I've been way too busy at work. Planning on making a start on the most critical R2 assets in a month or so.

Just one of many cases, really. As a general rule of thumb, people won't bother to check where some design originated, they'll think it originated from the place the saw it first. So we prefer to be the first to release new designs if they were made for Diaspora. The only way to guarantee that is not to release them before the game is out or just about to be released.

It will be a while before you get to see stuff like the Taurus, Inquisitor or Thanatos.  That said, when R1 is close to being shot out the Viper Tube, newman and I'll post a Dev Blog on the MK VIIE.  I think it will be pretty informative to those who are interested in seeing how a non canon craft evolves from a figment of my imagination, to a refined concept and finally an in game model.

Just to make it clear though, I suppose that does not mean that we'll get R1 this month.

As Torc pointed out, it does not. Basically different people get done with their jobs for Diaspora at different times. Newman's basically done all the model making he has assigned to him for R1 so apart from any tweaking or polishing he feels necessary he's free to start building things for R2.

This allows us to get a headstart on R2. One of the biggest delays we had with R1 was getting all the models to the point where the FREDders could start building missions with them. If Newman and other members of the art department can get us stuff ready the mission design department can go straight into building R2 as soon as they're finished with R1.
