Title: Kickstarter thread: Kick all the things!
Post by: Scourge of Ages on May 14, 2012, 07:42:56 pm
With all the cool stuff (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doublefine/double-fine-adventure?ref=live) lately on Kickstarter, and the roaring success of Starlight Inception (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/732317316/starlight-inceptiontm?ref=live), how about a general Kickstarter thread? Any projects you've kicked, or anything you think we might like to see, put it all here.

Whether they're still open for pledges or closed but worth keeping an eye on, post 'em!

I've got a bunch, but I'll just start with one: Xenonauts is on Kickstarter! (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/69341191/xenonauts?ref=live) That's right, the fan-made, spiritual successor to X-COM (no offense, UFO AI) is now available for pre-order!

This (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digitilus/skyjacker?ref=history) seems pretty interesting. Looks like "Darkstar One done right", but on LSD. It seems they even have a lot of finished assets to show.

10hrs left!  This is a dungeon crawler from some of the people who made Titan Quest, which is one of the best dungeon crawlers.

I suppose I should have put this up earlier, like before there were only 4 hours to go, but Legends of Eisenwald (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1684781151/legends-of-eisenwald) looks to be really interesting.

I'm not quite sure how to describe it, but Age of Empires meets Fire Emblem seems accurate enough. Only $15, and you have 4 hours to do it!

BUMP!

All of those projects have finished their kickstarters, so I would like to direct your attention to Castle Story:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/902505202/castle-story
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMCWVvuza_s

Notch himself is watching and kicking this very project. It's a voxel based castle buildy-management tower defense game, and apparently there's stone guys who attack your castle periodically.

Two more:

A first/third-person medieval combat game from the makers of the HL2 mod, Age of Chivalry. It's got swords, axes, bows, beheadings, brutal melee combat, and everything you'd expect from something like this. Picture a multiplayer Mount & Blade with better graphics and all combat.
Chivalry: Medieval Warfare (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1711512107/chivalry-medieval-warfare)

And a hex-based strategy and tactics game about conquering the new world! Picture a cross between Fire Emblem and X-COM (or Hammer and Sickle), but with conquistadors, and also a lot more options besides only fighting every mission.
Expeditions: Conquistador (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2128128298/expeditions-conquistador)

Yes, its over, but look at how far over it went!

Necrobump!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1438429768/maia

Quote from: http://indiegames.com/2012/11/kickstarter_projects_maia_simo.html
Anyone remember Sierra's Outpost? Well, no wonder you don't, as it was a rather obscure yet initially high-profile space-station management sim that promised much but, sadly, delivered little. It also made sure that I imagined a strategy/god game set in space that would probably never exist. Until Simon Roth's Maia, that is; an incredibly ambitious indie project that already looks pretty impressive and promises to blend elements of Dungeon Keeper, SimCity, Dwarf Fortress, the works of both Arthur Clarke and Douglas Adams, and a brilliant '70s sci-fi aesthetic into one cohesive whole.

Yes! I remember Outpost!

Ah, that was a good one wasn't it.

Well, I'm not sure it was good, but it was much closer to what Outpost promised to be. The funny thing is I have the original Outpost strategy guide, and it was clearly written with the game as it was supposed to be, rather than the game as it actually was, in mind. I've always wondered how that happened because you usually have to play it to write the strategy guide...

Hi again! Might as well put this out there too:

Running-away simulator pits you against murderous tweed-clad robots who systematically hunt you through a procedurally generated British island.

That video makes his proposition for making a new game much more interesting. Before I said I was not convinced from his prior description of the re-work that it would be any better than any open development of Elite clones might be, but that does indeed look quite interesting.

Tactical combat game featuring flying battleships set in an alternate history 1910. (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/642736004/leviathans-online-monsters-in-the-sky)

Browser/Mobile game, so not exactly an AAA title, but I love the board game so this is going to the top of my contribute list.

Bit of a stale bump here, but this thread is sort of my baby...

Race the Sun (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/flippfly/race-the-sun-endless-racer-with-mod-tools-and-mult) is a procedurally generated high-speed racing/obstacle course. They describe one of their influences as Star Fox, and it really does look like it, except about 10x faster, and I don't think there are things to shoot, just flying as fast and as far as you can.

8 hours left in the campaign as of right now, and only $2500 left to go.

Happily, they made it. :) This was one that I was watching anxiously.

I hope somebody (possibly me) uses their mod support to add an "audiosurf" mode. The pre-alpha game is wicked fun when played with your own tunes already, imagine if the landscape was at least partially responsive...

Have another!

Consortium: A "new breed" of RPG in which you apparently actually get to play your role, however you choose. It promises more, and more meaningful decisions, and realistically behaving enemies and NPCs.

Dunno how many of you guys play tactical wargames on the tabletop, but Palladium (publishers of the Robotech RPG) is making a new miniature-based games for Robotech:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rrpgt/robotech-rpg-tacticstm

Go kickstart it so I can get more toys with my BattleCry pledge!

Or if any of you just want some cool Robotech/Macross figs to paint up and put on your shelf now's your chance. Decorate that desktop area with a Mac II Monster ;) (though you'll need to paint it too)

Yes! Perhaps to make sure to appeal to all those who don't really know the difference, but still like the genre, or it's going to be like Total War. idk, still sounds cool.

I have a couple of questions that I haven't been able to find the answer to, and I wonder if anyone could help me.

If the project doesn't meet it's target, does no money change hands?

And what is to stop someone just pocketing the money and disappearing off into the sunset?
Title: Re: Kickstarter thread: Kick all the things!

Correct. Only if the funding target is met after the time allotted has passed is money actually collected from the donor's accounts.

Quote

Nothing whatsoever. There's also nothing whatsoever to guarantee that even if the people making the kickstarter are working dilligently on it will succeed in their endeavour (Of course, if someone were to just ride off into the sunset with the money, they'd have a difficult time repeating the performance).

Which is why you'll generally see a lot of effort being put into the sucessful kickstarters. If a game developer cannot convince potential backers of their ability to deliver the goods, the kickstarter usually fails (See, for example, the Double Fine Adventure KS, or the Torment: Tides of Numenera one). In other words, in order to pull off a successful scam on Kickstarter, you'd have to actually build a presentation convincing enough to fool people into believing that you have the skills to successfully pull it off; this is kinda hard to do if you do not have a reputation as a developer.

Basically, when Chris Avellone says "I need money to do this game", I am willing to give him my money cos I know he's able to do it.
J. Random Person? Not so much.

Of course, there's also nothing from stopping somebody from setting up a goal of $1, so that no matter how much they get they take it all.

Though this guy does seem to be able to actually deliver.

A bump:

Hyper Light Drifter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1661802484/hyper-light-drifter)
It's a game, seems Zelda-esque. It's got style out the wazoo, and has a lot of people excited.

BUT! It also has a new boss who attacks with "mutated hard-light pincer claws (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1661802484/hyper-light-drifter/posts/620360?at=BAh7B0kiCHVpZAY6BkVUaQPAQRBJIgtleHBpcnkGOwBUSSIYMjAxMy0xMS0wOCAwMjo0NzoxMgY7AFQ%3D--98b805ebc05af44b9896dd3e8cdbcd0266fbb0a5&ref=backer_project_update)" so I think that means we have to back it or something.

Really excited about this one: Cyan, the creators of Myst and Riven, have a Kickstarter going for a brand-new project called Obduction (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cyaninc/obduction), a sci-fi themed adventure game.  This is essentially their first work on a brand-new universe in 20 years, and I can't wait to see what they come up with for it.  They've managed to hit $100k in less than a day, so it's looking very promising.

Edit: And now it's fast approaching $350k in less than two days.  I've backed a few things before, but never one of these crazy-exponential campaigns, and it's just fantastic. :D
