Title: RELEASE - Hannibal's last stand, nuke party mission
Post by: woogie on January 06, 2013, 01:02:58 pm
Hello,
First I would really like to thank you for this game! It is amazing. In my opinion, one of the best Battlestar Galactica games.
That being said, I figured I should try to bring something to to the community, so here it is, my first mission:

Hannibal's Last Stand.
http://www.datafilehost.com/download-dcb83f85.html (http://www.datafilehost.com/download-dcb83f85.html)
You need to uncheck the checkbox for using DFH's download manager or their link will grab that software instead

I also submitted the mission at http://www.freespacemods.net/ not sure if in the correct position.
Few words about the mission;
I did take the launching and the landing and a couple of sounds, and the counter from the campaign. I hope this is ok  :)

As a short description for the mission: nuke party (and don't forget to command the squads).

Let me know what you think.

I don't have Diaspora installed on this machine so I can't play it, but your description does make it sound like the mission is a Battle of Endor (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Battle_of_Endor_Syndrome). If you're trying for 'serious' mission design, starting with a massive furball between loads of capships is a bad idea; you're better off cutting your teeth on small, focused missions and moving onto the big stuff when you have a good grasp on stuff like player agency and robust design.

I played the mission, and survived on the first try! Enjoyed giving all wings the commands to nuke the basestars :P.
Most of the time fighters and raptors can barely make a difference against basestars, but this mission proves they can :D.

Maybe the mission needed more raiders , at one point basestar 2 was just completely defenseless against the vipers and raptors. It made the mission quite easy, while you are taking down 3 basestars! The only defence a basestar has are it's raiders eh.
So it didn't feel like a battle of endor mission, but more like colonials throwing everything they got against a couple of (poorly defended) basestars. I think that was the goal anyway, so it's okay!
I didn't notice that the hannibal got destroyed, untill I nearly collided with a big part of it's front !(epic moment). Of course there is nothing to do about that, because you can't have all messages with a real voice.

How do you get stuff from the campaign missions though, I can't open those mission files and you can't copy events from different FRED windows right?

You can open the official Diaspora missions, but you need to extract them from the VP files first. I don't have a link to VPView but if you can get hold of that you'd be able to use it to open the VP files.

I took the mission from the campaigns using VPView. There are a couple of examples on this forum.
The mission files are text based so you can open them with some editor and take the certain portions of script that you need (again I hope this is "legal").
But before loading your mission again in the editor you need to modify the code to fit your needs (event names / ship names positions / a bit of logic etc). Otherwise you get a lot of exceptions.

There actually is a voice for Hannibal's explosion :)
And yes, the mission might be a bit easy; thou I died a couple of times while testing it. If I get more feedback I'll increasing the difficulty.
Already I saw some things that I missed in karajorma's FAQ for newbies, that should be included in the next release.

Such as? I'm more than happy to port stuff from the FAQ to the offline documentation if you think it would be useful to new FREDders. A modified version of the list of common mistakes did make it in.
