Title: A bit confused about installing
Post by: Aristo on May 07, 2013, 10:38:31 am
Alrighty, so I bought Freespace 2 from GOG and downloaded all the updates in FS2 Open, and I've finished the campaign. So now I wanted to go back and play FS1 with the port. I'm a bit puzzled where everything's supposed to go. The readme says "Delete, move, or rename your current FSPort and FSPort MediaVP directories." I don't think I have any FSPort files in my Freespace 2 directory. Is FS Open different from FS2 Open? Do I have to move the files in my mediavps_3612 folder? Not sure which method of installation in the readme applies to me.

Hi! o/

It's a bit daunting, yes, but I'll try to answer your questions.

The readme says "Delete, move, or rename your current FSPort and FSPort MediaVP directories." I don't think I have any FSPort files in my Freespace 2 directory.
This is IF you have a previous version of FSPort installed. If you don't (that is, you don't have any folder with "fsport" in its name), you can ignore this step.

No. A darling child has many names. FS2 Open, FS Open, FSO,... they all mean the open source version of the FS2 game engine.

No! You must not move them anywhere. Many mods rely on the MediaVPs being in that folder.

That would be the FS2 Open method. In a nutshell
- You apparently have the regular MediaVPs in  \freespace2\mediavps_3612\ . Leave them be.
- you should end up with two directories under \freespace2\ : \fsport\ and \fsport-mediavps\
- \fsport-mediavps\ should have the FSPort MediaVPs, the music files and the Tango_hi files
- \fsport\ should have the rest of the FSPort files

Oh, that clears things up. Thanks for your help!

Got it up and running, however, it's not detecting my thrustmaster HOTAS. Never had a problem with that in FS2.
Found that it reverted to 'no joystick' when  I changed the mod. No worry!
