Title: Remember Me
Post by: Zacam on June 04, 2013, 03:15:00 pm
I'm not very far along into this game yet (2 hours in), but I figured I'd start this off with some quick impressions:

The Good:

Storyline (so far) is cohesive, and the atmosphere of it sells it rather well. However much the notion might currently seem odd (I wouldn't participate in it myself), it is rather well executed. I do think that they do try a little too hard in some places in terms of environment though, but its not enough to really break the game for me.

Gameplay is rather smooth, even on my currently aged system. Sure, I don't get ALL the eyecandy on (Supersampling is off, AA is Low and Texture details are Medium) but even still, it is so very pretty.

The Bad:

Linear. Not quite "I herd you like rails, so I put some rails on a rail machine on rails" and it it at least doesn't do it terribly. Based on the venerable Unreal Engine, it makes sense that it would be, but coming from more "Open World" engine games, this one might feel claustrophobic to some.

Also, the environmental guide hints of where to go, would have been nice to have not made that a permanent fixture across all difficulty levels. 'Easy', I can understand, but we also have the Eye-Aug, so you could have hidden them in 'Normal' until activated and then made 'Hard' all the more challenging for not having them at all.

The Ugly:

Now, this may only apply to my scenario, but the controller input detection on this game sucks terribly. I have a G13 Keypad, Saitek X-52 Pro and a 360 Controller. Despite telling the game that I want to use Keyboard/Mouse, it still insists on reading control inputs from "all teh devices" at once. And how it does it doesn't make any sense. Because the joystick is centered, my mouse gets countered by it, so I can't move it worth a damn. Running with the controller is jerky and I can't finesse just walking with it and the character will randomly turn because the sensitivity to the joystick means any vibration will cause its input to contribute. And trying to properly execute combo's is a nightmare, even without the AI dog-piling me and interrupting that.

And speaking of the combos... You only get certain key moves to chain into combos. Once you set a move to a combo, that's it. I would have liked to see some versatility in this system so that any one move could be shared across combos (assuming that you only get to use it once per combo, rather than just once PERIOD).

Summation:

Still glad that I got this game anyway. I'm looking forward to how well it holds up as I continue to progress through the story line but I do think that they need to address controller device separation/polling at some point. I don't relish the though of having to unplug things before I start the game in order to play it properly. I'll definitely Remember playing it, that's for sure.

****ing regional releases mean that us euro types will get to play this on Friday.

Been playing it a bit too, and pretty much exactly what you said (Zacam), though less generous in total. The camera is floaty and the combos are awkward at best, frustrating at their worst, and its pretty much essential these don't suck for a whatever-this-genre-is game to not suck.

Played about 3 1/2 hours so far, though I didn't feel like the writing/story was getting worse, for what it's worth. (The intro segment was pretty horrendous imo) I is disappointed kitty. :(

SO I was really pumped about this game. Everything about it seemed to be designed to cater to my tastes, which is something I appreciate. And, for the most part, this thing hits all the right buttons for me (Despite shortcomings that are to be expected in an A or AA class title).
Oh, and even if the subject matter and gameplay are nothing for you, give the OST a listen. It is completely amazing.

But.

At least on my system, this game is glitchy as ****. It'll freeze at the drop of a hat and not recover, which is severely damaging my enjoyment of this title.

Spoiler:
The game was very good up until I reached the final boss, at which point I was shaking my head in despair because he was clearly added in only because someone seriously thought this game required a gigantic final boss with multiple combat stages that are variations of the exact same thing, and I want to shoot them for ruining what should have been this game's greatest moment.

Spoiler:
Wouldn't surprise me if the final boss fight was outsourced to the same guys who made DX:HR boss fights. :D

 :bump:

Just started on this, looks like a great story... if I could only play it without sound glitching out and graphics freezing up (despite being set to low, my GPU exceeds the recommended specs, and it doesn't like CPU should be a factor...). Does anyone else get this? It seems like there's either something wrong on my end, or the game is horribly optimized. I've tried googling the issues, but as you can imagine, a title like "Remember Me" doesn't exactly lend itself to googling (read: it spewed out every single forum ever with a "remember me" checkbox and barely related performance issues).

Also, one thing I really hate is the rewind mechanic. If there's anything that's gonna wear my Fighterstick out, it's this game (I can't get the mouse to work for this). My impressions so far: would be an all-round great game, if it was not made for consoles first and for PC later. A few optimizations and a PC-oriented control scheme (or even controller customization) would've made it really great.

I actually had very few performance issues and I've played it on a Quadro 4000, a Geforce 650 and a Radeon 4870HD. Couldn't run it maxed on all three, but otherwise no problems.

The combat is somewhat tedious after a while, and it's very obviously meant for a 360 controller. Played it that way and definitely enjoyed it.

Well, maybe it didn't like my sound system, or something. Sound always glitched out first. It's especially weird that it doesn't look nearly as good or isn't nearly as complex as The Witcher 2 or ArmA3, and yet, it works much, much worse. It might be optimization for Xbox 360 tri-core processor (I'm stuck with a dual core), but it's not like a game like that has any reason to be CPU-heavy...

That said, I managed to finish it. The story was very good, though I felt they somewhat underplayed the seriousness of memory theft/alteration. At times, I thought the enemies assessment of Nilin's actions was entirely justified...

I feel like that may have been the point - the story was portrayed from the viewpoint of someone who felt they were doing right, but you're right that many of the charges against Nilin were completely valid. Almost like you are supposed to notice how justified the complaints against her were.

Much of the story and your actions in it were morally ambiguous, at best. In many ways she was walking the same road as those she considered her enemies.

A lot of it comes down to who is the narrator in this case. The viewpoint of the player may not match the viewpoint of your avatar or the narrator, and I feel like it did a passable job of allowing that point to come through without being heavy handed about it.

Yes, I noticed that, too. Especially given how the story later developed, it's entirely plausible she'd do just that.
Spoiler:
Indeed, she suffers some of the exact same faults her parents did. It's rather subtle, but when you think of it, she turned out a lot like them.
Though they should have done more environmental interactions. The way it's portrayed in game, you're not quite sure if this was an intended effect or not. She's not quite confronted with anyone "neutral" who'd question her actions - only enemies, and her own doubts. I think it could benefit from more interactions with civilians, and perhaps more humanization of Enforcers (we do see them doing their "normal" job once, though to their credit, it's well done). You are, after all, a criminal beating up police officers. You do get "called out" on your actions, but only by news broadcasts - this being cyberpunk, the news in such a setting have a good chance of being propaganda.
