Hey,
I'm having trouble with the resolution being stuck at 800x600 regardless of what I choose in the FSOPEN launcher (5.5).
I am using MediaVps (most recent version), I have verified that all the files are located in the C:\Games\Freespace2\mediavps_3612. Updated Nvidia drivers, and I am using FSOPEN_3_7_0.
I don't receive any error messages, and the models/backrounds/effects are all present without any other issues. Also this is an install from my original (yes, you are hearing smugness there) retail cds.
Things I have already tried:
setting a custom flag -res 1650x1050, which I found in another similar thread
tried compatibility mode and giving administrator rights
reinstalled up-to-date nvidia drivers
Using wxlauncher, didn't help matters.
I attached both my FS log and a dxdiag report.
Let me know if there is anything else you require!
Thanks!

You're missing sparky_hi_fs2.vp, which is necessary for higher resolutions. To get it, you need to reinstall the game. During installation, when presented with a list of components to install, make sure every option is checked.

Yep, indeed that was the problem. Reinstall with the missing item selected, and problem was solved. I feel like an idiot now, but thanks for the help!
