Title: Stuck with a Windows 8 Issue
Post by: admiral_wolf on February 01, 2014, 10:55:20 am
Hi

After a rather long hiatus, (took a wrong turn in Gamma Draconis, don't ask what I saw, it's classified beyond Level Rho), I've updated my system to Windows 8.  However while following the directions on the FS Wiki, when it came to opening the FSO Installer, Windows doesn't know what to do with a .jar file.  I haven't yet downloaded the OpenAL as this seems to be down as well.

I realise I sound like I don't know what I'm doing (let's face this, I only evacuated 4 Pods when my ship was destroyed), but I could do with (a lot) of help here.

To open .jar files you need Java. http://java.com/
The latest installer should also set up OpenAL for you.

Uh, I think someone should probably flag that none of the installers available are safe for use right now. Follow the manual install instructions to save yourself a TON of heartache.

The new installer should be online Soon (tm).

Goober's installer should be safe to use now and the FSWiki instructions have been updated accordingly. Neither the wiki or the installer web page mentions Java though.

Also, www.fsoinstaller.com looks horrid. What is this, Geocities?
