Title: FreeSpace Port 3.5 + FSPort Media VPs Release!
Post by: Goober5000 on February 02, 2015, 10:44:46 pm
Freespace Port 3.5 + FSPort Media VPs Release

In honor of Groundhog Day, we are proud to bring you yet another release of the FreeSpace Port: version 3.5.  This latest and greatest version offers full support for the MediaVPs 2014 while retaining the reverse compatibility that this mod is famous (and infamous) for.

We are also proud to offer the latest DIRECTOR'S CUT update of Silent Threat: Reborn!  Check out the thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=59120.0) for more details!

Here's all the spiffy new stuff available in this version of the Port:

As always FSPort remains retail compatible but optimized for Freespace Open.  If you use FSO, we recommend a recent build such as 3.7.2 RC5.  (Please note that some features, such as the enhanced main halls, will not appear when playing earlier versions.)

It is strongly recommended to use the FreeSpace Open Installer (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/) to download and install the Port, due to the number of possible mod configurations.  But if you would like to manually download the files, you can find them listed below.

(Note, the translation packs are not provided through the installer, because of the possibility of conflicts if the user selects "Complete Installation".  Those will need to be downloaded manually for the time being.)

Optional Downloads

The FSPort Media VP makes everything pretty, and the music VP contains the remixed version of the FS1 soundtrack that Dan Wentz provided specially for HLP. Both are optional, but highly recommended!

Sweet.  Finally the update I've been waiting for.  (Still no new Apollo though :( )
And ST:R too.  Plus cutscenes for that?  Yes, please.

Edit: well crap I crashed when the repulse arrived.  not sure if it's you guys or if it's the radar icons I've been working on.  Does the regular executable generate a log or just the debug build?
(FSO exited with a status of 255)

Transient error

Hello,

I tested the translation pack (french) for fsport 3.5 and only voice and cutscenes work. No text is translated in the game (briefing, debriefing or playing). If someone have an solution, i will apreciate it ;)

Thank you

I believe it is necessary to set your language in the FreeSpace 2 registry.  I'm not sure how to do this, but it has been discussed on HLP so you might be able to search for it.

Yarn handled the translation packs, so he should be able to provide a better answer when he sees your question.

Great to hear it!

And I'm glad to hear that someone tried out a language pack so quickly.  It is a positive sign for our popularity among foreign language gamers. :)

Just to be sure, if I want the remastered music:

I SHOULDN"T download the "warble" pack, but rather just download the thing under 'optional downloads' and place that in 'fsport-mediavps'?

Small thing, but you should have included 182x80 mod.ini images for wxLauncher users. wxL is pretty bad at image scaling.. so including a 182x80 image makes it look just that much more presentable.

Congratulations on the release!  :pimp:

Yet again, you people are still my heroes! Keeping this old game alive and all...

One thing caught my eye though:

Code: [Select]
Place all the contents of these zipped files into 'freespace2/fsport-mediavps' (or 'freespace2/fsport-mediavps_2014' if using the 2014 add-on)
Isn't this a bit counter-productive? Why change the folder name if the only thing that has changed in fsport-mediavps is one single table file? I have already used the unofficial 2014 patch table file with the older 3.4 FSport + fsport -mediavps combination succesfully with numerous FSPort campaign mods. I changed the mod.ini file in all of my FSport campaign mods to the following:

[multimod]
secondarylist = fsport-mediavps,fsport,MediaVPs_2014;

So far I have encountered 100% backwards compatibility with mods like:

- Aftermath 2.1
- Awakenings
- Bem Cavalgar
- Cardinal Spear
- Destiny of Peace
- Frontlines 2334
- Shrouding the light
- Silen Threat: Reborn 1.3
- Tango
- The Crucible

So why the proposed folder name change for fsport-mediaVPs? Wouldn't that break all my mod.ini loading orders? Or is this folder name change foreshadowing a future fsport-mediaVPs release that will differ from the old version as much as MediaVPs_2014 differed from MediaVPs_3612 and thus breaking the backwards compatibility by some degree?

Don't get me wrong. This proposed folder name change for fsport-mediaVPs is not going to wreck my installation since I can re-tweak mod.ini files again, but I'm just asking this because I'm curious  :)

I can't get the new mainhalls to work.  I used the installer to update the fsport and fsportmvps and am using the latest nightly.  I was playing through the FS1 main campaign and installed the upgrade.  Do I need to restart the campaign to get the new mainhalls to work?

The mainhalls are separate files,  did they get downloaded

Post by: Macfie on February 03, 2015, 08:02:10 pm
Nevermind I figured out the problem.  The mainhalls won't work with the nightly builds only with 3.7.2RC5 because the nightly builds are 3.7.1 builds.

Yes; despite the fact that the most recent Nightly builds are actually newer than 3.7.2 RC5, they technically have a lower version number; rather than going through the trouble to specify the exact revision number with which the feature became available in the version comment, it's a lot more convenient to just specify that they should be using at least 3.7.2 (especially when 3.7.2 Final should be just around the corner, and Nightly builds will start being 3.7.3).

So if you revised the line to ;;FSO 3.7.1;; +Substitute Main Hall: Krios, it would work with the latest nightly.

I SHOULDN"T download the "warble" pack, but rather just download the thing under 'optional downloads' and place that in 'fsport-mediavps'?

You can download both packs.  The Installer puts the remixed music pack in the fsport-mediavps folder, and anything there will override its counterpart in the fsport folder.

Small thing, but you should have included 182x80 mod.ini images for wxLauncher users. wxL is pretty bad at image scaling.. so including a 182x80 image makes it look just that much more presentable.

Good catch; I will do so.

Code: [Select]

Isn't this a bit counter-productive? Why change the folder name if the only thing that has changed in fsport-mediavps is one single table file?

Because it's not possible to use the same folder to work with both MVPs 3.6.12 and MVPs 2014.  If you use 2014 you must include the file; if you use 3.6.12 you must not include the file.  So we use two folders to deal with the two mod configurations.

As for why we didn't just include the file and be done with it, well, we're all about compatibility here at the FSPort.  Most FSPort campaigns still have mod.ini files which point to 3.6.12; those would all be broken if we forced the upgrade, and then we'd have to deal with the inevitable technical support requests. :p  Additionally, there might be situations where you would want to run one FSPort-based mod using 3.6.12 and one using 2014 (one example I can think of is troubleshooting a mod error).  Having two folders retains that possibility.

Quote
I changed the mod.ini file in all of my FSport campaign mods to the following:

[multimod]
secondarylist = fsport-mediavps,fsport,MediaVPs_2014;

It looks like you've removed the primarylist line and merged it into secondarylist.  That can lead to unintended results.  For example you might find that low-poly models show up in unexpected places.

So if you revised the line to ;;FSO 3.7.1;; +Substitute Main Hall: Krios, it would work with the latest nightly.

It would, but if you were to try a nightly from a few months ago (which is still 3.7.1) you'd end up with a bunch of mod errors.  So hack the data files at your own risk. :)

If I want to use both the 2012 and 2014 VPs, then I'll need to create both 'freespace2/fsport-mediavps'  'freespace2/fsport-mediavps_2014'  of those folders correct?

I also presume I would then put the 3.6.12 VPs link (under "Optional Downloads" in the OP) into the 'freespace2/fsport-mediavps' folder and the 2014 VPs add on in the 'freespace2/fsport-mediavps_2014' folder?

Finally, which of those two folders would I put the FS1 remastered music download (the third link under "Optional Downloads") into?

Yes.  You should also copy the 3.6.12 Port VPs into the 2014 folder, so that the 2014 folder contains the 3.6.12 Port VPs plus the add-on.  (At least, that's how things are configured currently.  Soon I'll change how the mod is set up so that no copying is necessary.

Both.  (Again, just for the time being.)

Really, I would recommend using the FSO Installer (see the top navbar) as it handles all of this for you.

I had already had everything necessary downloaded manually prior to the Installer being completed recently.

Plus, FS2 was put on my computer via my retail copy (SOTY).

Huh?

This is a brand new FS Port version 3.5 released on Feb 2nd. The installer has been done for months now. My Freespace 2 install was all up to date using the installer every few weeks (as they were adding more and more campaigns) but when I ran it on the Feb 2rd it downloaded and installed the 3.5 stuff automatically. That is why you should always use the installer. It keeps you install clean and updated as well as making sure all the files are in the proper place.

I had my FSO stuff installed from retail CD years ago.  This was before the installer was completed months ago.

I was also told the installer is only for use if you got FS2 through GOG.

No, it can only install FS2 for you if you have the GOG installer; it's intended for installing FSO+Mods on all existing FS2 installations.

Can and arguably should; it greatly simplifies things and (hopefully) standardizes how mods get installed, to reduce the frequency with which incorrectly-installed mods need troubleshooting.

By the way, why are Tango_hi -files supposed to be installed in "fsport" folder instead of "fsport-mediaVPs"? I thought fsport was supposed to only contain "original fidelity" content and fsport-mediaVPs was the collection of upgraded stuff.

Because those are the high-res versions of the regular cbanims.  It's analogous to sparky_fs2 and sparky_hi_fs2.  Even though they are only enabled on FSO, I don't see why one should put them in fsport-mediavps.

Hello HLP forums. I am really in need of some assistance here.
When I installed FSPort and its associated fsport-MediaVPs_2014 files I ended up with these errors: (see attachment) and the game refuses to start the mod.
This is the third redownload/reinstallation of the mod today that I had to do; followed all given instructions to the letter, but to no avail.  :banghead: Is there a step that I may have missed in installation? Or must something have messed up with the download itself?
Thank you.

This is the same problem that Reloaded experienced, as seen here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=88957.msg1776239#msg1776239).  The solution is to not use 3.7.2 RC1, RC2, RC3, or RC4.  Either use RC5 or a 3.7.1 or earlier build.

Thanks for the advice everyone.  I may try it later this weekend.

Since I've never used it before, what should I do if I just want the new FSPort stuff (3.5) and the Silent Threat:  Reborn updated that came out a few days ago) and not everything else?

Also, since I already have FSPort 3.4 installed, will this Installer automatically uninstall the previous version before it puts 3.5 in or should I delete 3.4 first?

Just start the installer, select "custom", pick the options you want (you can also grab RC5 from hear it you haven't already), and let the installer do its thing.

Not sure about deleting 3.4 first.  I didn't do that and it seems fine.

Good luck!!

You don't need to delete FSPort 3.4; in fact, the files that haven't changed, the installer should recognize as being the same, and only download the new stuff.

Does that mean the installer will automatically delete the fsport3_4.vp file in my 'freespace2/fsport' folder and replace it with the fsport3_5.vp file?

Why would anyone try this manually? The installer ques up the downloads and installs everything for you. We wanted the installer for many years so enjoy it

Because the installer fails to detect what is present already and I am not in the mood of redownloading everything.

EDIT: When I think about it, there should really be an option to scan for these things, e.g. based on directory and VP names. Would not be perfect but good enough...

I was playing a FSPort campaign (Shrouding The Light to be specific) after using the Installer recently to download the latest FSPort 3.5 and it looked like one of the models (Seth fighter) is now in the 2012VP appearance whereas before I used the Installer it looked like the 2014 version.

What should the mod.ini read like to make sure all models look like the 2014 mediaVPs?

The default mod.ini that comes with ST:R 1.4 uses the 2014 MediaVPs. Here are its contents:

infotext     = As the Great War rages on, you've been commissioned by Galactic Terran Intelligence for special intelligence operations.  Your objectives are to contain the Shivan onslaught and preserve the fragile Terran-Vasudan alliance.  But a series of suspicious events cloud the GTI's spotless record.  Is the GTI setting you up or are the Shivans spreading their evil rage?;
website      = http://fsport.hard-light.net/website/str/;
forum        = http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=140.0;

primarylist = fsport-mediavps_2014;

The installer does check what's present already, just not before you make your decision about which mods to install. When it goes to actually install the mod, it checks to see if any of the destination files are already there; if they are, it does a checksum comparison to see if they're the same as the ones it's being told to install. If they are, it should skip them. I've had this happen multiple times when a mod I had already installed got added to the installer; I'd re-run the installer, tell it to install the new mod, and after a few seconds it had confirmed that all of the checksums matched and "installation" was done.

Welp
The problem is that the mission no longer has the "Taranis dead" event, which is needed for the mission to fail after the Taranis arrives. That event got removed a few months before FSPort 3.4 when Goober added some hacks that ensure that the Taranis actually does destroy the Ramses; he was probably unaware of that event's significance. I'll add it back in for the next release.

In skimming over the log file, it looks like my ship and weapons tables may be corrupted (although I'm not sure how, but possibly as a result of trying to play Operation Templar with FSPort enabled a few days ago, which was certainly a different experience). What do I need to download to get fresh ones?

A suggestion: Instead of the VP SHA-1 I think it'd be better to make a SHA-1 hash of the .7z/.zip file, because it's smaller so faster to process.

I wish there was a tool to download all the .sha files and check all the files in a folder, I think 7-Zip or Total Commander can make batch checking, so I'd like to request to each file gets a filename.sha file with its SHA-1 hash value and all of the files of this release to be compressed in a .7z file, and this file would have a .sha file too, so you'd add 2 links to the release for convenience to check integrity without too much trouble:

1) release_sha-1.7z
2) release_sha-1.7z.sha

I would like all releases to do this for standard, simplicity and efficiency sakes of the integrity checking process. I'm checking several SHA-1 hash generators to see which ones can help automate the .sha file creation, and I'd make a thread about it unless people here don't agree, want to or already have such a tool or feel this process is not needed.

Never and don't need to, but I just downloaded it and it's cool, it recognized the game but not my current installation: 3.7.2 RC5, MediaVPs_2014 and wxLauncher 0.9.4, I liked that has many campaign download options and the complete game, but it doesn't writes in its website or wiki about MD5/SHA-1 integrity checks, which would be a nice option to select before going to the download window.

Anyway I think my suggestion it'd be a good addition for people that don't use the installer (FSOI) and the FSOI could take advantage of this and use the release_sha-1.7z and release_sha-1.7z.sha links to download the checksums and make the checking for the user.

Good, that's a necessary and cool feature.

I have more questions if anyone care to answer them:
1)Does FSOI has all the released campaigns/full-games or only some?
2) is it difficult to add them with the checksums?
3) what tool do you use to generate the hashes? what integrity hash algorithm FSOI use? more than 1? I'd think it uses SHA-1 for all the campaign/full-games it supports.

Nobody has a comment or constructive criticism to my suggestion, is it out of place or too far fetched? I think not.

Only the ones mod authors have provided installation files for. There are plenty of mods out there that still aren't available through the installer, but at the same time, there are plenty that are.

I'm fairly sure the installer has an option to generate MD5 checksums for mod creators to add to their installer configuration files.

In this thread there is only the retail one and in the linked thread there is only the remaster of the retail one. But where i can find the extended version with the Vasuda Prime evacuation sequence in it?

I know it was linked in the 3.4 release thread back then...

Personally, the one I liked best (and  I wish I could find it) was I saw a version where they blended the evacuation and destruction of Vasuda prime into the ancients cutscene that plays after the same mission.  It's very effective, much more so than just showing views of space while she's talking.

The fall of Vasuda Prime and the merger of that and Ancients was a victim of "It's not retail" syndrome if I am not mistaken.

Seems that i mistaken. I found the 3.4 Release thread and there were also no link to this cutscene. Maybe it was linked in a much older version or i get it from another source back then.

Fortunately i found the 480 and 1080p version of the extended ancients4 cutscenes in archives on my external hard disk.
So, i still miss the 720p one.

So you are saying, create a list of all files and their SHA-1 hashes, put those in a text file, and then create a SHA-1 hash of that generated text file?  Because, if so, that's bloody brilliant, because then you can just hash the text file almost instantly, and only parse individual files if that check fails.

Goober, does your Installer utilize this trick?

Perhaps I should say that it's closer to the canonical gameplay of the original.  The FreeSpace Port is a port of the FS1 campaign, not a reimagining.  Even the enhanced music and cutscenes are optional.

There is a difference between "supports X" and "installs X by default".

That is the stand alone version. But there was also a version that was appended to mjn's Ancients3 cutscene in one whole longer cutscene.
And i am unable to find this version of that cutscene in 720p, because i only have the 480 and 1080p on my external hard drive. :/.

Because the cutscenes are optional, anyway... why not to link also the extended cutscene as additional optional content :).

Fair enough.  it's just that I have seen WAY too many discussions when making new, higher quality assets that turn into an arguments over whether or not something is close enough to retail or if Volition would have done that if they made the game today.  You know, the usual.

In a similar vein, what would you say if someone made one of the cutscenes Volition detailed in the FS1 reference bible?  Many of those were cut for time.

I do definitely see not forcing the change on someone, but it would be cool to have those minor changes easier to find.

That is the stand alone version. But there was also a version that was appended to mjn's Ancients3 cutscene in one whole longer cutscene.

Yeah, I mentioned that one (though was misremembering thinking it was ancients 4).
As I said, even if it's different from the original, I think it is a great cutscene and the voiceover showing the current event that mirrors the ancients fall makes the voiceover more effective, and the solemn music and voice, makes what you are seeing more effective.

Basically the combination is much better than either alone or both one after the other.

Props to Mjn.Mixael for his work on the updated flight decks. Such a breath of fresh air from the old, pixilated originals. Those old decks needed a new coat of paint.

You are using Media VPS 3.6.14 with rc5, right?

You might want to run the Installer again, just to be sure it can get any files missed the first time (it should have warned you if that was the case, but maybe you didn't see it?)

If you are still having trouble, Please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

That's the 2014 MediaVPs with FSO 3.7.2 RC5.

This is definitely what you should do, though.

I've been meaning to ask (a dumb question, I think): when you guys update FSPort, is it just the Core downloads that are updated, or all of the required and optional assets?

BTW, I usually do manual installations :3 :P

EDIT: New question - is it possible to use the VPs with the original FS1 media in 3.5?

It really depends on the release.  The intention was to just update a few files, but most releases see all files updated in one way or another.

EDIT: New question - is it possible to use the VPs with the original FS1 media in 3.5?

Generally no, but for different reasons.  The models, missions, and tables can't be used directly, because they need to be updated for FS2 formats.  The voice VPs can't be used because Volition changed the directory names from "briefings" and "debriefings" to "briefing" and "debriefing", for some reason.  The music could be used directly but it isn't in a VP by itself.  I think the cbanims are the only things that could be copied over directly.  I'd have to study my FS1 installation to sort out all the differences.

hi
thanx for releasing new fsport. it looks amazing with mediavps 2014.
i tried install it with java installer, but the installer was unable to install fsport-mediavps-2014.
So i deleted fsport and fsportmediavps folders and downloaded all files manualy (i used links from first post), now everythink works, but i dont hear voiceacting in briefing and missions.
its expected behavior or i do something wrong??
i use linux and fsopen3.7.2 compiled from source.

thanx for answer and sorry for my bad english;)

Yes, stu_fs1.vp has been removed from the FSPort distribution.  We are working on a way to allow importing the voice data from an installation of FS1.

In the meantime, if you have FS1, you can use a VP extractor to copy the voice files to the FSPort's mod folder.

Is that going to happen to any other files as well?

AFAIK someone brought up that FS1 is available for a reasonable price and we are kind of sort of undercutting their sales (on Steam and GOG) by basically offering FS1 for free.  It would be like porting Half-Life 1 & expansions / Portal 1 to Half-Life 2 / Portal 2 for free as long as you owned HL2/P2.

Those are in freespace.vp and voc.vp for GOG, not sure about retail / Steam.

Wouldn't it have been easier to only allow installation upon verification of an FS1 install by checking FS1 hashes or something?  Like if you had a list of hashes for file from an FS1 CD / install, a GOG setup file, and Steam's FS1 (if different from retail), then I would think that would prove ownership, right?

'cause importing would involve at least extracting from multiple .vp files, probably repacking them as well, and if you have FS1 retail on CD and can't install it due to 16-bit installers, or a scratched disk, oh, what a headache..

I'm just saying importing seems to be a big pain, and hash verification would do the trick easier, right? (At least as far as that one-trick pony goes -- verifying or importing won't stop easy access if folks won't buy it!)

To be clear, I support what is being attempted.  I'm just not sure why we are trying for importation vs. validation.

EDIT: Just in case anyone thinks I'm supporting piracy by posting said image above -- I'm only trying to say that yes we should encourage ownership, but we can't pretend that we can force the issue, so why not go for the easiest option to prove ownership (as steps to fake ownership are trivial (indeed, even unnecessary if one just downloads the whole of the SCP + MVPs + mods in one go!)  Also - no site name, no URL, but if it's deemed inappropriate, my apologies & please remove it.

EDIT2:  Of course, I should also say, if a method is developed to import all forms of legal FS1 data (CD, GOG, Steam) that is reliable and painless for the end user, please forget I ever said anything about it, and kudos to whoever develops that!

The main problem is that when Galemp originally asked for (and received) permission to port FS1, his question did not cover things like the voice acting.  That remains a gray area, so we want to avoid the appearance of impropriety.

Irrelevant.  It's the principle of the thing.

This is the plan.  The good news is that Yarn will be contributing his time and efforts as well, so this goal should be finished about ten times more quickly than if I did it all myself.  Stay tuned.

It's also a really ineffective form of DRM which doesn't actually change the fact that you're redistributing the content without permission. You either distribute the voice files freely or not at all, faffing around with contrived compromises is pointless.

Fortunately, It looks like it won't really be necessary to install FS1 first. On the retail CDs at least, all the VPs are stored in-the-plain, not locked up in InstallShield CAB files that absolutely nothing except InstallShield can open. I'm not completely sure how it is with the GOG.com version, though.

i tried extract voice files from freespace.vp and voc.vp from gog freespace1 (i installed it with wine and used maja for vp manipulation), i created stu_fs2.vp and got voice in missions, training and command briefings, but there was still missing voice acting in mission briefings and end mission debriefings.
so i downloaded fsport 3.3 from this link: http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.639 and used included stu_fs2.vp, now everything works.

thanks guys for advices and for solving my problem;)

AFAIK, it treats the installer like any other archive, so you can pick and choose specific files to extract.

Unfortunately no.  The files can only be extracted by InnoExtract (http://constexpr.org/innoextract/), which is an all-or-nothing extractor.

I suspect we'll offer a prompt with three options: extract from installed game, extract from CD, extract from GOG package.  (And perhaps that third option will imply a full parallel installation of FS1.)

Apologies if this has been asked before, but does anyone know if there is a way to extract the contents of the GOG installer files?

I'm thinking maybe for such games as Duke 3D and Blood that I'd like to be able to get at the game content files (.grp files for Duke) so that I can use them with source ports (eDuke32 and the upcoming DarkXL which will play Blood). Rather than install them, get the required files, and then uninstall the games again.

  Innounp (http://innounp.sourceforge.net/)

TL;DR:  Yes it should be possible according ^ that.

Maybe you could extract to a temporary folder, copy/move whatever resources are needed, and then delete that folder.

It also only provides builds for Windows.  Now, the source is available, but the source is written in Object Pascal, which I am not familiar with.  There are Object Pascal compilers available for multiple compilers, so it is at least theoretically possible, but this would involve significant research.  Considering that I wasted a month trying to get a build of InnoExtract for just Windows XP, I am not eager to invest the amount of time that would be required.  Plus, InnoExtract is good enough for our purposes and is already integrated into the FSO Installer.

Which is fine in principle but is extremely not newbie-friendly. You're not the one handling the support requests on IRC asking where are the voices gone.

You should probably have delayed release until you had an automated extraction up and running, or left 3.4 in place of 3.5 on the installer at the very least.

Until then, I'm gonna keep redirecting newbies to 3.4.

*sigh* as if FSport wasn't enough of a mess to deal with as it is...

In all honesty i did it manually and screwed up with FS Port and using the media vps. I'm trying to do it manually so i can learn something about modding, and where files need to be etc. Also in case the launcher becomes obsolete( if this awesome site ever  closes).

I'm actually using the launcher to fix whatever I screwed up. Somethings i did right since it said mod up to date.

Quick question can i simply back up the Fs port, Fs port mediavps , fsport media vps_2014, fs:str, and mediavps_2014 folders(from the Freespace 2 folder on my PC) onto my portable hard drive so i can easily just drag them back to the C:games/Freespce2/  folder if i decide to uninstall?

Basically avoiding using the launcher and avoid using winrar later on in life

Ah, a tinkerer. :)  I'm very pleased to hear this.  Often the best way to figure out how something works is to take it apart and rebuild it.

Careful with the terminology though.  The Installer and Launcher are two different things.  The first downloads the mods; the second chooses the mods and configures the game.

Yup, it has numerous safeguards for exactly this reason.  It's not foolproof though, and it is possible to screw things up and prevent the mod from working.  But we on HLP can help you out if you get into that situation.

One time I used the installer and it failed a few times on a few files. No idea why. That pushed me to try it manually. I'm happy I accomplished most of it.

That's awesome if can simply copy the entire folder for much easier installation later. Do I have to worry about te registry for the vanilla game?

I want to play the original FS1 (through FSPort with the latest graphics...MediaVPs2014).  However, when I bring up mods in my launcher it looks like there are two tabs that I could choose:  "FSPort MediaVPs_2014 v 3.5" and simply"FSPort 3.5".  Which one would I choose?

It could be that you have a stray VP in your path, or a different command line than you expect.  Could you post your fs2_open.log file?  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.msg1180359#msg1180359).

I think I was looking at things wrong, I tried it again and it looked like retail.

Here's the log in any case.

Command line looks good.  If you see retail models now then it looks like things are working fine.

I seem to have a problem with 3.5, don't know if it's intentional.

I installed everything manually. Downloaded the FSport Mediavps and the Mediavps 2014 patch, extracted them to the fsport-mediavps_2014 folder. All ship models look good except for the Valkyrie, Anubis and Aten who are still displaying the old models.

Here's my log if it helps.

Thanks for such an amazing port.

It looks like you've unpacked the FSPort MediaVPs directly into the FSPort folder. They need to be in their own mod folder to work properly. Otherwise they'll get overridden!

Yep, that fixed it.

God, I need better reading comprehension, I had all my files jumbled up :banghead:.

Thank you very much.

Hey everyone!

I am having some issues with my Freespace Port. I cannot get any of the voice acting from the original game, all I get is a women's voice similar to Siri. Am I missing the wav files or any other files that are associated with the command briefing/pilot/command voices? thanks!

:welcome:

The FreeSpace Port does not officially provide the voice acting from FS1.  You can try moving the WAV files from FS1, or using the FreeSpace Open Installer (http://www.fsoinstaller.com) to install the Port.  (Note: the FSO Installer requires Java.)

Thank you! I downloaded everything from 3.5 but I was able to get the voice acting by grabbing the stu_fs1.vp from a previous version, however I have one last question. The only thing missing now is the sounds for the cannons and the lasers. Explosions, missiles, and ships all have their sounds, but whenever I fire my cannons there's nothing. Is there any specific file that I can grab (in this case I am taking files from v3.3 and applying it to v3.5) that can add sound to the cannons? Or is this a similar issue of the port not having the correct file? Thanks again.

You have to use the installer that Goober linked to.

Heads up.. I need to shut down my old server (lunardigitalproductions.com). If you guys are still relying on any files being hosted there, I recommend uploading a mirror and updating your installer files.

Noted, thanks.  I just checked and the FSPort installer text file doesn't link to anything on lunardigitalproductions.com.  The cutscenes and main halls were already mirrored on our FSMods account.

I'm not sure if anyone is still updating the FSPort project, but is there any news of adding the new HD Apollo model into the MediaVPs proper?

There's a new MediaVPs release so, yes, I'm on it.

There's also the new Scarab Vasudan Support ship.  That should be included too.

sorry to be a thicko but just wanted to check.

background:

I've just bought the steam version of the game (still have the original CDs & manual, etc,  but they just take so long to install from). It had 30% off in the steam sale, so I went for that instead of GOG, and of course I've still got the manual.

I've used the FS2.reg file and that fixed the "Freespace2/Fred2 cannot be run from a drive root directory!" error message (just saying if a search on this error hits this post).

I'm currently using knossos 0.12.3 to manage stuff (I like the way you can uninstall mods and browse for them more easily than with the java mod installer, though that's been my go-to system for years).

I'm installing freespace port using knossos

Knossos has already installed fsopen 3.8.

I'm currently installing mediaVP 3.8

I noted and ticked the checkbox for legacy EDIT: tilemaps support.

my question:

Do i still need 3.7.2 mediaVP configured for freespace port or will it be able to use the mediaVP 3.8 files?

So, thanks in advance for any replies and, seriously, thanks to this wonderful community too. I'm nearly 46 and had my gaming hayday really with the likes of freespace 2, xwing alliance, etc. I was i think about 8 years old when elite was released (and i was playing that on a BBC model B)! I love space games/sims and it's fabulous that you collectively are still supporting freespace 2.

Cheers,

Gary

Thanks for your interest, and the kind words!

The MediaVPs 3.8 were released only a few days ago, and most mods, including FSPort, have not yet been adapted to work with it.  There may be incompatibilities or conflicts with the new version, so we need to thoroughly test and check for any warnings, errors, or unexpected behavior.  Most mods need to do this, and FSPort is one of the more complex mods.

TLDR: You will still need to use FSPort MediaVPs 3.7.2 and MediaVPs 3.7.2 for the time being.  We will make a new post when we release an update.

Thanks for the super quick reply.

I'll pull down the 3.7.2 MediaVPs for both then.

I tried running with the 3.8 ones and got:

"Error: game_settings.tbl(line 2):"
"Error: Missing required token: [#END]. Found [$Target Version:] instead"

there was a reference to ""parselo.cpp" too

I fixed this with the 20 August 2018 nightly build.

However, on reflection, I'd prefer i think to roll with the stable engine and relevant MediaVP, so will revert.

config switches:

Any tips on config switches that don't work properly on 3.7.2 (e.g.  lighting on missiles, 3d shockwaves, etc - just as examples, not because I've had issues)?

Shall i just go with the default switches?

Thanks,

Gary

I would recommend hopping on HLP's IRC or Discord servers (see the top navbar) and asking for people's opinions on recommended settings.

The two settings I know still work that I always set are

- disabling emissive light from ships

- setting the ambient factor to 0

It gives you a lot of emphasis on the weapon, engine, and shield effects.

If your computer can handle it, the frame buffer shockwaves, thrusters, and soft particles look great. 3D shockwaves as  well.

I cant remember what other old command line lighting features still work with the new renderer though (they mostly messed with specularity on OpenGL).

You don't have to integrate social media stuff to have  up / down + offtopic voting on the forums (see: Subnautica forums, I believe they use Vanilla?)

We specifically made the decision not to integrate that sort of plugin onto HLP.  There is a plugin available for SMF; we just don't use it.

What's wrong?  I manually installed the new Leviathan when it was released so I had to overcome a few issues with it.

I did a clean install using Knossos just for testing. The model is not loaded.

Fixing it manually will probably work. I was just reporting an out-of-the-box issue, I suspect there may be more. For the record, I did install the legacy-VP of the new MediaVPS too.

I'm running into some weird timing issues with the latest version of Last Hope. I haven't tested it extensively, but it looks like your mission progress is scripted to follow how much of the Shivan attack force has been destroyed, while the pace of the Hope's repairs is determined by the actual mission clock. The mission itself isn't particularly difficult, as it requires no micromanagement (simply tell your wingmen to defend the Hope at the start and they'll take care of themselves from then on), meaning that you can blaze through all of the Shivan attack waves in a relatively short amount of time and meet your relief force long before the Hope has finished its repairs. This does nothing to halt the progress of the campaign or stop you from completing the mission, but it does appear to throw your objectives out of whack, as the "Defend the Hope" objective won't register as being completed.

Oh, actually, that directive was added for the FSPort - it doesn't exist in the original FS1 mission.  I've fixed it so that it will become true when the goal does, and this fix will appear in the next FSPort release.

The timing is exactly the same as it was in the original mission.  I assume Volition wanted to give a sense of an ongoing repair, even after the attack was over.

Is there an approximate date of release for the next FSPort version (3.6?) that will be compatible with the newly released MediaVPs (4.0.x)?

Edit: I'd like to pare down my MediaVP tree be finally being able to delete the 2014 MediaVPs from my drive.  :p

I had hoped to get to it over Thanksgiving, but things didn't work out.  I'm pretty booked through the end of the year, unfortunately.  But I'm fairly confident it will be ready by the end of January.
