Title: AMD and OpenGL
Post by: Firesteel on October 17, 2015, 12:02:52 am
With my desktop going on 3+ years (and having built it on the tail end of Ivy Bridge and Kepler closer to 4+ years from a technology standpoint) and nVidia's new announcement that their game optimized drivers will require an account with them, I started looking much more closely at AMD's cards, with my main reservation being AMD's lackluster drivers, particularly around OpenGL performance issues. I'm primarily concerned with running FreeSpace (I'm here after all) as well as games running on iDTech engines and other source ports. I was wondering if anyone cared to shed some more light on their experiences with newer AMD cards when running FreeSpace or other OpenGL based games. Thanks guys!

Freespace 2, Wolfenstein: New Order, and Doom 3 have all had zero problems on my 4350 FX HD 7850. In a few months I'll be able to tell you if the same is true with a 9350 FX, R9 390X system. The downfall of AMD certainly isn't graphics cards, its CPUs.

Thanks, most of my reservations were from Rage and Wolfenstein The New Order's launches.

Running a 7970 right now in my ivy bridge system, no issues whatsoever. drivers are rock solid and performance in all games that I play is above 60 fps at 1080p max graphics
