Title: No Interplay web presence
Post by: Selectah on September 05, 2018, 05:56:09 pm
IP's web presence is zip-a-doodle-doo. I checked the domain name, and the registration's good. The server, as well. I sense intent.

RIP Interplay, you where never truly alive.

I would say, that they were never truly dead  :D

Much more resilent than Atari IMO

If Interplay completely dissolves... who's selling FS?

I'm sure Mr. Not-Smart will try in that case.

Well, because Freespace changed over half of my lifetime, i would spend over a half of my money for it :D.

But i hope i do not need up to 600k $ for that, because then i think my husband would consider to send me right into a psychiatry if i do that only for the love to freespace

One way or another, it'd be good to see the company that murdered FS3 being buried alive.

This is something (might be a rumor) I read a long time ago on this site, but supposedly Volition wanted to make an official FS2 expansion campaign, but Interplay killed the idea.

That was probably their first victim. :mad2: (Not entirely sure though whether that was their fault too)

Now people have been trying to built what they destroyed for almost 2 decades.

I remember this, too.  It's somewhere here on the forums.

To answer your question, work had started on an expansion pack for FS2, but it got killed pretty early on. I think it might have been about returning to Earth, but I really don't remember.
From the interview with Jason Scott. (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=74745.msg1477326#msg1477326)

Crowdfund buying the IP + making FS3 (doesn't have to be a sequel, yo)  if that happens.

I'd donate to buying the FS IP, but only so that HLP could hold it to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.  I wouldn't be happy with some sort of fan-created "official" FS3.

There is no fan creation that could ever be FS3.. even if HLP held the IP (which is very, very unlikely).

I'd love to see a community owned FS IP (I mean, we could distribute it for free then, right?), but I think that it is highly unlikely to happen. :(

There might even be some objection to calling Blue Planet FS3 correct?

BP is a cool thing, but it is actually never FS3. While :v: probably played with the idea to add new species (the Ancients), I massively doubt they'd ever done something like the Vishnans (in fact, their concept is contrary to Canon, which had the Shivans being both Destroyers and Preservers).

It's like Sync/Transcend, but much more complex of course - something that if you unbind the story from FS you could easily sell as a book, but not necessarily a FS game.

Even INF, which is pretty much what everybody believed to be what FS3 would be like for a long time - first fighting Earth, than the Shivans - is apparently something different to what Volition intended if you read the interview thread carefully.

Guys, all you need to know about FreeSpace 3 is what www.freespace3.com (http://www.freespace3.com) points at.

Clearly it should have been pointed at Freespace 3: The Search for Bosch

Not that I particularly disagree, but your rather definite statement here seems (at least for me) to beg the question: What is Freespace 3?

A Volition game with Jason Scott writing, IMO. But more likely the truth is that nothing can be FS3 - too much time has passed, people are in different places, there’s no way a new FS game would be designed the same way.

Any and every campaign set after FS2 is FS3.

Think about it, how many people would be still here if the series had a conclusion? At least you wouldn't have any of post-Capella campaigns here.

I can't remember where I read it but apparently Interplay sold the rights to FS at some point, only to rebuy them later. For that purchase I've seen the price of 7.5K float around.
But again: I can't remember where I've read it so who knows how much is true. But if it is that puts it within scope of many wallets.
(but I doubt it is true. :( )

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-06-07-interplay-snaps-up-freespace-ip-for-just-USD7500
seems a simple google would have turned up a source. from 2013 though

This is inaccurate. Interplay have always held the publishing and distribution rights to FS. Volition sold them the remaining rights that they held - That includes the rights to game assets, names etc.
$7.5k will not buy you the FS IP. Add at least 2-3 digits to the end of that.

Edit: A better question - What happens to the Freespace and Descent titles on GOG and Steam if Interplay go kaput? I'd hate to see them disappear from retail completely (that already happened with Descent for a while)
