Other thread titles :"The great devourer of modelers" or "That stupid thing "  "Bloody mess of tiles and gubbins" "Directly antagonistic in shape and colour to whomever tried to create a update it. Has like sixteen different connecting curves and shapes that makes out its silhouette" < (that one was too long)

So, here it is. a progress thread for the Demon.  :nervous:


Abit about the current state of the model, the textures are placeholders for the most part. The final model will not have tilemapping as it does now. Planning to incorporate the tiling into the main maps by baking and painting up the bits so it will seamlessly
stretch over the model.
Main mesh is subject to change especially around the engine area seeing its mostly unfinished.

Maybe, its a simple palette swap but again something for the very last.

If anyone hasn't taken a look yet, you gotta zoom in so close that you see within the model.  Apparently Shivans are an aquatic species.

Well it's a lot more complicated than that. we're getting to a time where the original round of upgrades aren't holding up anymore. Shivan ships that come to mind are the Azrael, Dis, Asmodeus, Ravana, and Moloch too an extent. Many of the original upgrades for Terran ships are really not holding up now, especially the fighters.

Come to think of it I don't think the Myrmidon has ever gotten an upgrade.

I'm...pretty sure the Myrmidon is upgraded.  Or at least "upgraded" in the sense that word was used at the time.

Edit: Yeah it definitely is, I know for a fact that the retail Myrmidon didn't have the round modeled primary slots or engine thrusters.

Myrmidon is upgraded, but it's one of the oldest upgrades we have. If I remember correctly, it predates cockpit era. It's actually the only terran strikecraft without a cockpit. Ye, it needs new iteration badly...

This may be a sticking point, but I feel it should be clarified. One's role in FSU is separate from any models and upgrades they may choose to do. Often skills in asset creation qualify someone to be on the team, but that does not mean their work is subject to FSU oversight. As such, I do not require people to upload working files. They can choose to, however.

Also the Demon is a special case ... its a ship with so much untapped potential, compared to other ships mentioned here - that I've been trying to turn it into a working missile destroyer (with and without the use of local ssm) is just the tip of possibilities IMO

... also the "claws" and the "arch" make for some pretty good antenae for some plot equipment, no?

(I actually been tempted to use a Demon's arch as a portal multiple times over the years - just never pulled the trigger on that one)

Same here, buddy. It's also pretty much the only FS1-era ship of that size that can be tweaked into having decent anti-fighter defenses, thanks to its turret placements.

It feels much like a classic FS1 destroyer where its strength depended upon carrying as many fighters and bombers in a heavy armor, not the biggest beam ever.

I'm not sure if you're wanting artistic advice, but I'm going to say this anyway because I was thinking about this a while back so I have some ideas.

Standard caveats apply: your model, you can do what you want with it, just providing input.

Okay, so. The point of this is to increase the model's fidelity, but if you just take the same overall shape and add a lot of surface detail, it'll probably end up looking sort of...delicate? in a way that might not suit the Demon. So I think the best approach would be to reimagine the morphology somewhat.

IIRC, Battuta once, during a previous discussion of this topic, described the Demon as something along the lines of "a big fat spider that sits out in space bleeding fighters". With that imagery, combined with bits of the HTL Rakshasa, I think I have a hook that might give you a way to make a strong artistic improvement.

So, I think the key to the Demon's overall appearance is these...ribs? Legs? I don't know what you'd call them.

As it is, they're very blocky. What if they were much smoother? Like big fat spider legs. Or, say, like these spikes on the side of the Rakshasa:

If you round off the "legs", make them into tapered cylinders running halfway up the model -- then gradually make the curve more gentle the higher you go -- you'll end up with the flanks of the ship having this wavy, rib-like structure, with crests and troughs. This ought to result in a somewhat organic feel -- almost a little Gigeresque -- that I think will suit the Shivans well.

I kind of think you should maybe round off that corner. It's weirdly square and I don't think it looks good. I'm a lot less sure about this one than I am about the ribs thing, though (and the extra-pointy the WIP has it kind of works in its own right), so if anyone else feels differently please chime in.

Overall: as it is, you're rounding off some parts of the model but leaving a lot of sharp angles in. I think you're at risk of making the Demon look very high-tech, which I don't think is really appropriate. Obviously the Shivans are high-tech, but that doesn't generally come across in their visual design -- their ships don't look advanced; they look eldritch and animalistic.

Anyway, those are my two cents. Hope you'll get something useful out of it, but if you don't, oh well.  :p

I really don't like to see a spider-demon. It's nice on something small like the Rakshasa, on the Demon it looks fragile. Perhaps it works on the Ravana.

Ye, lower spikes should remain quite massive. Demon is overally very thicc guy, so thin, spiky claws would look off.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that the ribs/legs be narrow. Sorry if I gave that impression. I was trying to emphasize the roundness aspect, not the overall size and breadth of the legs -- I wouldn't want that changed much from retail.

Yeah, I see how the spider metaphor would be misleading. I'm...I'm envisioning something like a really beefy tarantula. Like, a spider with such thick legs that they're rubbing up against each other.

As pointed out before and I agree the spider legs would look cool however the retail model and textures do not imply such a shape in my opinion. rather emphasize the insect feeling as seen in the fs2 models I see the Demon more like a hulking behemoth. Its gray and mottled armour textures gives me an impression of slabs with round but angular surfaces on the machine bits. If you look close on the retail mesh, most of the capital04-03 (black machine bits) surfaces are complely angular with next to none in roundless. Sure there are angles to it but all of them imply a hard edge or surface, well what I think of it at least.

... The Demon is more crustacean than an arachnid - paricularly the suborder of the Oniscidea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodlouse) or a species from genus of Bathynomus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_isopod)

EDIT: You may have to turn the Demon by 180° - you know, the arch being the antenae and the head being the tail

Looking good. Only thing I would say is that the spiky curved things along the flanks look more Vasudan than Shivan. Perhaps make them more angular, thus creating a more 'V' shaped look as opposed to the U shaped one?

Not to mention that even if people disappear, they can sometimes come back. Hell, I disappeared for 17 years and I'm back now! Don't tell me that you don't find my return reassuring! ;) :D :cool:

Then again, I didn't disappear after trying to mod the SD Demon. I'm told that is a more permanent type of disappearance. Maybe I dodged a bullet there... :nervous: :shaking: :nervous:

A couple months back Oddgrim took on the Demon and basically finished the model and textures, but decided that he needs to start it over to do it properly.

Since then, not a single sign of life from him, as per the Demon curse.

The mesh was far from being completed. Same with textures. What you see in p3d in the first post is something about 35% job done.

[DATA EXPUNGED] Is a phenomenon in where anyone who attempts to recreate or enhance the 3d model "capital04.pof" from the 1999 6dof space combat game [DELETED] will; after a period between 4-5 months- either: lose all or most 3d modeling ability and socially isolate, or in some rare cases vanish entirely.

It is not certain if it is the amount of time since a new model is started, or the level of completion that triggers the anomalous effects.

A neural-net was trained to re-master 3d spaceship models, upon attempting to process the SD Demon model, the sever room caught fire.

After reviewing some blender tutorials, [______] was tasked with making an HTL SD Demon, [_____] gave up after 4 weeks, [_____] now has a strong psychological aversion to all 3d modeling software, which has now been incorporated into it's containment procedures.

I dunno, that ass looks a little too mechanical for my taste... Granted this is only a WIP with incomplete shading, but it doesn't quite have that eldritch abomination feel that I've come to expect from Shivan ships. Those pipes just throw it off.

Still, as proof of concept, it's pretty solid. I can't wait to see the final result. :nod:

Also, it might have been a good idea to start with another part of the SD Demon for the simple reason that starting with the ship's rear will bring the inevitable jokes about how "that screenshot looks like ass" and the poster's meaning might be misinterpreted.  :p

Really? I can't recall seeing anything like them except for perhaps the red tether-things on the front-port side of the SD Ravana. Refresh my memory, Nyct, which Shivan ships have pipe textures?

Here's the receipts screenshotted from retail. Some of these are more open to interpretation than others and that's the point. What you always saw in these old blurry textures aren't always what others saw. Be careful making blanket statements about what certain things should and shouldn't be.

I just noticed that all the highlights Mjn.mixael showed us were of the old retail textures, not the new Media.vps. I'm wondering if all this piping/tubing carried over into the new graphics. I think I'd be disappointed if it didn't.  :(

Well an explanation is in order methinks. Now the light as you pointed out is wrong, however for the sake of creating a more interesting light bounce in the image (emission strength of 1 is a big snorefest  :ick:) I have overexposed the emission light in the texture so it is way stronger.  But as a consequence the red colour in the light whites out and comes out "wrong". (boo)
Now I admit there as a bit of laziness on my own part in not adjusting the node setup to counteract this very natural way light functions but, eh it would need a few more extra shade mix and a bit more stuff.  :p

So here is a image with the same light emission strength but with the red in the texture maintained.  :D

Nope. Changning the weapons on turret22 and turret23 from Fighter Killers to my custom Alpheidae (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpheidae) AShMs is almost enough. Any further changes I would have to do would be with the FOV of the turrets.
