Title: Mirroring the Orion: can a total newbie do it?
Post by: Zarax on July 09, 2020, 12:32:25 am
I know the title is weird but it's also accurate.
I don't have any knowledge of modeling (and I'm barely better at texturing) but this is something I've been thinking about for years.

I would like to do a "catamaran" version of the GTD Orion, basically mirroring it with the landing pads inside and moving some turrets from the new "inside" to the external sides of the ship.

Is it something doable with Blender or do I need any extra tools?

Thanks in advance!

Apply mirror modifier and move the Orion and turrets around as needed. That's really it I think.

Well alongside making a .pof through PCS2 of course.

Like I said, I don't know anything about modelling, some more detailed directions would be welcome.

I'm currently away from my PC so I can't give the most accurate instructions but basically you need to select detail0 (the main model) and go to the modifiers tab (wrench icon) and add a mirror modifier (Do not apply!)

Then go into Edit Mode, press A to "select all" and move the mesh around until you're happy with the mirroring. Rinse and repeat with the LODs and turrets.

Of course I must stress that the turrets that will be added need to be numbered.

Can I open the pof directly in Blender or do I need something else to export and reimport?

Gotta open it in PCS2 first, export as Collada (.dae) and import that into Blender.

There is literal mirrored Orion in Inferno Nostos release as EACa Auriga. There is also new design (https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/GTHD_Orion_Mk2) based on the same principle.

Thanks but it seems to be the opposite mirroring to what I'd like to do...

Instruction for 2.80/2.81:

Go to Edit mode, go to ortographic projection [5], set your camera to be above the ship [or below] [Scroll + Left Alt], select Knife [K]. set one cut point outside your model, press C to align your Knife to axises, press K for knife projection, drag your line through the middle of Orion's ramp, click on the other side of Orion [in front of the ramp] to set your cutting line, then apply it by pressing Enter.

Now go to Z [wireframe mode], toggle face selecting mode, press B for rectangular selection and select all the stuff along the knife projection edge. Prese Del, and select Faces.

Now your Orion should have nice, straight cut and hole. It's good.

Move all the geometry on one side of Blender Y axis [the green line]. You probably want to keep turrets on their positions, so go to edit mode, select everything and move them on one side of Y. If you made your knife projection from above, you want to move your Orion to the left. The line of your knife projection should be aligned with Y axis. Now make mirror and profit.

Before you add mirror, make sure that mesh is properly centered. If you moved the mesh with turrets in Object Mode, the pivot point [orange dot] was moved with it so mirror will not appear correctly. Make sure that your pivot point is on the Y axis as well. It's best when it's on [XYZ] 0.0.0. You can manipulate pivot point by using Transform Window and 3D cursor option. Move your 3D cursor to 0.0.0, then select your Orion in Object Mode, then hit Object -> Set Origin -> Origin to 3D Cursor.

Aww... And you may need to redo turret layout.

If you set all materials and smoothing setting correctly, your catamaran Orion should be ready for export.

So, I should be able to obtain this, right?

Be aware that there's a new Orion model coming soon. You may want to wait with finishing up this model until it's out so that you can get all the hipoly pbr goodness in there

Even higher poly than the current one?
I suspect I should better practice with the simpler retail model, anything more complex will be bound to make the process more complicated...

Holy Poly! I wonder how much that level of detail will raise hardware requirements...

Sounds like you want an inverted sanctuary?
With a hangar in the middle and two hulls either side?

The idea is to have a "budget superdestroyer".

"By refitting two Orion hulls under construction, the GTD xxx project had two aims: to project the equivalent firepower of a single GTD Orion in a single broadside and to protect its fighter compartment during launch and landing operations, where they are critically vulnerable. This configuration makes it an excellent blockade runner, although the hastily designed catamaran construction is less durable than two separate destroyers".

The concept looks kinda similar to one really old ship made by Aldo.

Aldo... Haven't heard that name here in a long time.

Too bad we can't summon Aldo just by calling his name :(

Nobody used his full name..... The magic number makes the difference.
