Title: Post-server move issues
Post by: The E on October 26, 2017, 02:34:43 am
There seem to be a few issues with the site right now:
-Top nav bar is missing
-User info panel and user action bar (or whatever it's called) isn't skinned properly:

-Other skinning issues:

The Quick Reply sizing isn't constrained to the browser canvas size, so it rolls right off the side:

Also, Avatars are now presenting under Badges now (as opposed to over), though that's a minor difference over what it used to be.

I'm not getting topic notification emails and posts in political discussions are showing up in unread, whereas they didn't before.

The tabs on the top of the site desperately need updating and pruning. Several dead links in the External sites part, and I guess the hosted projects part is a work in progress? Cause if it's not...
Mantis is barely used anymore by the SCP, since most of it seems to have transferred to git, yet there is no link to git in there.

The folder order is all jumbled as well.

The odd thing is that in the admin panel they were in the correct order, so I just reset one of them at random and then put it back. That seems to have fixed it. Tell me if you spot any of the boards are in the wrong place.

Go to wiki.hard-light.net.  We'll have a URL redirector up at some point.

It turns out rev_posix used a nonstandard forum migration procedure (copy+paste, instead of install and import).  I'm going to look into this.

The little orange "jump to first unread post" in the thread just jumps to the first unread post from before the move, it's not updating.

It's not just "new post" buttons, and it's not the first unread post from before the move, either.

The [size] tag doesn't seem to work. No matter what number I put there, the resulting text is always 5pt.
The textarea for posting can't be resized with the bar at the bottom (the builtin resizing of Firefox and Chrome still works).

EDIT: Is there anything we can do to help?

I've figured out the hosted website issues.  All of the hosted websites dated from our earlier backup on July 30, 2016.  The current backups are available but I have to restore them manually for each website.  The diaspora, fsport, and scroll websites have been brought up to date.  (Although scroll is redirecting to the main page for reasons I don't understand at the moment.)

I will eventually make my way through each website, but feel free to squawk and I'll put yours at the top of the queue.

Also, if you need FTP access to your mod, let me know and I'll enable your account.

Register at http://www.hard-light.net/users/ for a website account. Those accounts belonging to responsible and identifiable forumites (i.e. use your forum email address) may be granted access to modify stuff belonging to the mainpage. :)

Nada. I haven't been involved in the move at all, besides preparing the new website. I'll gladly look into the missing CSS once I'm told that things shouldn't be broken anymore but still are for some reason. ;) In the meantime... KCCO. ;)

Can't seem to upload a new avatar, there's a message says the attachments directory isn't writable, or something.

P.S. Keep up the good work getting the site up and running 100% again, and thanks to all the staff for looking out for the future.

The Google Plus page (https://plus.google.com/117946939162790533636) is out of date (2013) - OT, I know.  Should I start another thread?  I only realized cause I was poking around the new site and it's linked there.

I'm going to do a forum reinstallation either today or tomorrow, just like I did with the wiki.  That should fix all the formatting and bookmarking issues.

Is fs2netd.game-warden.com part of this move as well?  It's been down since last week.

As far as I know that is not managed by any of the HLP staff.  Do you know who's in charge of it?

http://wingsofdawn.hard-light.net/ there used to be a page of mine here. Now it just shows a half working version of the main page.

A number of subdomains were misconfigured like this.  A two-part fix was required.  I just finished fixing all of them, and I'm waiting on rev_posix for the final reconfiguration.

Are the pictures of "highlight" projects (and the pictures are links to the appropriate threads) going to return to the top of the page like they were before this move?

Yes.  Sandwich will take care of that after the forums are fixed.

The IPs for game-warden.com and our new hard-light.net server differ by one digit (GW is 66.187.72.108; new HLP is 66.187.72.107), so it stands to reason that there might be some sort of connection there...

Next that signatures are not shown entirely, some formats in the forum are also broken.

Try to use another font size and you have to use a magnifying glass to actually read it.

THIS IS BIG!

Well, I guess taylor was maintaining it, and then it was handed down to me to an extent when I wanted to set up SquadWar.  Not sure how many other people knew this but I had sudo access to the old box for some years now so I could do that and help with FS2NetD.  fs2netd.game-warden.com is actually pointing to 96.31.94.82 currently.  This is what it has always pointed to I believe, as I can still log in with the fs2net account.  I was under the impression that the GW/HLP IPs were the CloudFlare IPs or whatever, and that this FS2NetD is the direct IP to the old host itself.  Perhaps this is the issue, FS2NetD was never put behind the CloudFlare firewall, and seems to have been forgotten in the DNS migration.  It appears that apache is no longer running on the old host.

Hosted projects should be working now.

fs2netd.game-warden.com is MP's thing, I believe.  Adding fs2netd.hard-light.net is easy enough, and I do believe I was able to find and save all the binaries, so it could be set up on the new HLP box, I believe.

My question was about the highlight pictures/links at the top of the forum.

Anyways, Goober and Sandwich, for what it's worth I set up a Fenris donation.  I wish I could do more but income isn't 100% reliable right now.  I've enjoyed all the campaigns and things I've got from this place over the years I wanted to at least do the minimum to support. :)

Not to be a nag, but any progress on fixing the forum theme?  The site is nigh-unusable on mobile right now due to this absurdly-wide Quick Reply box.  (Yes, you can collapse it, but you need to do so for every single thread you open, which is super-obnoxious.)  Jumping to new posts also being broken is a major drag too.

For some reason, there are a lot of errors that need fixing (see the news announcement).  I put in several hours of work on the first attempt, and although a lot got done, there is still more to do.  I ought to have time to do more today though.

The [size] tag doesn't seem to work. No matter what number I put there, the resulting text is always 5pt.

This was due to a PHP incompatibility that kicked in after our move to PHP 7 on the new server.  It should be fixed now.

Send cash money my way, please. :)

Ditto.  This was the problem:

Code: [Select]
#quickReplyOptions form textarea
{
height: 100px;
width: 635px;
max-width: 100%;
min-width: 100%;
margin: 0.25em 0 1em 0;
}

The middle three lines were supplied in the default theme, but not the HLP theme.  I guess they became required on the move to the new server.  I have no idea why. :confused:

Looks like clearing the cache did the trick. :yes:

One more very minor issue way down the priority list: there's still something on the page that seems to be generating a horizontal scroll bar, whether in a maximized or resized browser window.  It only appears when viewing an individual thread, and it only scrolls for a few pixels in either direction.

Sandwich/Goober5000,

A suggestion for donations:  maybe add a "Colossus" option at $10?

In keeping with the humorous donation descriptions, it could read something like "Hey, this big ship failed...but your big donation won't fail to help keep HLP afloat".
Title: Re: Post-server move issues
Post by: Goober5000 on November 11, 2017, 01:41:39 pm
I'll leave that to Sandwich.  Although I think the "Colossus" option should be a lot larger. :p

I've also been investigating the issue where the browser doesn't jump to the correct post.  I can't figure out what's wrong.  The pages have the proper
Code: [Select]
<a id="anchor"></a>lines, and the anchors have the IDs specified properly.  I would hope that Sandwich's new theme from scratch (currently under construction) will fix this, but on the other hand it doesn't appear to be broken in the current theme.  Anyone have any ideas? :confused:
Title: Re: Post-server move issues

It's a CSS problem. Remove float: left from the post_wrapper class.

EDIT: Here are more CSS fixes to fix the post appearance:
Code: [Select]
.post_wrapper { float: none; margin: 8px 4px; }
.moderatorbar { clear: both; }
.windowbg, .windowbg2 { background: none; }
Title: Re: Post-server move issues
Post by: Goober5000 on November 11, 2017, 11:53:04 pm
Ah, looks like that fixed it.  Too bad I can't give you another gold star. :)

EDIT: I removed the background: none change because that just completely removed the HLP-style color shading.

EDIT2: Minor nitpick: the browser doesn't jump to the top of the post, but rather the location where the text starts.  Would be nice to adjust that.  Or maybe that's one of those things that'll be fixed in the new theme.

The only remaining issue, AFAIK, is the forum registration as described here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=94114.0).  I'll need someone to help with that because I'm not familiar with .htaccess.

The wiki captcha is still broken.

With the mediaWiki update to version 1.29, using MathCaptcha now requires installing the Math extension and an entire rabbit hole of dependencies.  Considering that wiki registration is now done manually, I just disabled the captcha.  Try again.

I just remembered that email notifications are still MIA though.

Email notifications for the forum?  Rev_posix determined that our hosting provider is on somebody's blacklists, so emails may or may not go through.  Yahoo lets them through; Hotmail doesn't.  I asked him to coordinate with MatthewPapa to get the host off the blacklist.

This still needs happening.

I've always had my bookmark set to the homepage, and looking at it now gives me a thought: we really need some sort of big prominent blue button to head straight to the forums.  Right now the only indication on the page that we even have a forum is buried under the HLP drop-down listing.

The reverse is also true.  Perhaps call it the "Landing Pad" or "Hard Light Central" or something, to take you back to the main non-forum page.

I think that will come once the top navbar gets fixed to display on the forums as well.

Thanks for the reminder.  I'll take a look at this, hopefully in the next day or so, otherwise after Thanksgiving.

Regarding the forum's navbar, I've been trying to schedule a session where Sandwich and I can coordinate, but that depends on both of us being available simultaneously.

Right, yeah, that's weird. According to the forum I made that post an hour and a quarter later then I actually did. I can chalk the hour down to timezone related grubbins but not the quarter. It's currently 00:06 here.

I just checked; this is due to the server.  The current time is skewed by about 15 minutes.

We'll fix this at some point, but considering all the other stuff on our plate, this will be a low priority.

It looks like Mantis was upgraded with the server move, and new user registration on Mantis was disabled during that process?  No one can find a link to sign up for it.  If that was intentional, I need to request an account be added by an admin for wookieejedi.  If it wasn't intentional, can someone check the value of $g_allow_signup in config_inc.php?  I think that's where the setting would be.  I am not an admin, only manager level, so I can't manually add users it seems.

Under Installing FreeSpace Open, Knossos (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=94068.0) needs to go in there soon, if not now with a (beta) tag on it.
Title: Re: Post-server move issues

It's already there, just disabled.  I initially had it enabled, but then decided to disable it until it's out of beta.

Per discussion on Discord, the developers want to be careful about introducing it to the general public until they're ready.

(FSMods is also there, but disabled, until we complete the migration of the old site to fsmods.hard-light.net.)

So fsmods will come back? Thought it was gone forever-
Q: does it still look like the original FSMods or will it get HLP colors and layout?
Title: Re: Post-server move issues
Post by: Goober5000 on April 21, 2018, 07:12:36 pm
It will be back.  We have the internal configuration and all the files that were stored on it.  The difficult part is rebuilding the site and linking all the files to their proper entries.  Chief1983 is working on it when he has time.

Right now we're focusing on just getting the site working.  It is likely that we'll need to install the latest version and use the standard theme, but I'm sure members of HLP could recreate the custom theme for us.

Ah, good to know. :)

Little thing I've found- while viewing the user profiles the signature is (if it's longer) always cut off and the "expand" button is missing. Not really relevant, though.

Is anybody working on the main page? IMO it doesn't seem as professional as HLP is when on the main page mostly short descriptions, 404s and Lorem ipsum can be found.

Sandwich is working on a new forum theme, so hopefully the signature issue in the profile will be fixed with that version.

Main page work is being done sporadically.  We could really use additional help generating content: descriptions, flavor, promotions, projects, whatever.  Are you interested? :)

Hmm I don't know if I need to reinvent the wheel for that- with that I mean most things have already been written in the thousands of posts here in a very useful and easy-to-understand way (for example the getting started board), sometimes over and over again. One could gather them and bring them on the main site (maybe a bit edited). For info on hosted projects (as well as for the wiki), I think the best way would be to ask the project heads to do some advertising for their nice things. :)
Title: Re: Post-server move issues
Post by: Goober5000 on April 21, 2018, 08:05:19 pm
Naturally.  It's not very hard, it just requires a little bit of effort - as you said, tracking down posts and possibly editing them together in an easy-to-understand way.

Karajorma has asked the project heads to contribute descriptions for their projects.  Some have responded; some have not yet responded.  We'll probably make another round of requests soon.

But again, we need help generating content, whether it's content from scratch or content that's already on the forum but needs editing together in a form suitable for the main page.  Are you interested?

Sure, I've got time :)

How much I can do depends on how long the articles should be and how heavily they have to be edit. Also English isn't my first languange, so it needs to be checked, anyway.

Also, I'm rather good at writing, not HTML or so...

The link to the hosted projects Mantis should be https://mantis.hard-light.net or https://www.hard-light.net/mantis/ should redirect there.

I'll change the link.  Redirects were put in place a while ago, but they were temporarily disabled because rev_posix was investigating some problems on the server.

That's fine. :)  Just post or PM the text you want to include, and we'll do the rest.

For starters, take a look at the top of the front page, where it says "THE GAME", "WHO WE ARE", and "GET INVOLVED".  See what you can come up with for those pages.

So the main page is somewhat lacking...

The Game page is very, very bland. Not even a single picture is on the page.
Who We Are is very, very short.
Get Involved goes to a 404.
News has really outdated news about a server switch that happened almost a year ago.
The Get Started button goes to a placeholder page.
Download Now should probably link to Knossos. Along with the Installer/Installation Guide just below.

One of the things the admins don't really do very well is generate interesting blurbs to read.  (Except for Axem, but he can't be everywhere.)  We can update links and fix pages, but filling them with content is where we fall down.  That's why Sandwich has often said that he really wants the community to chip in and generate interesting content.

So, can anyone come up with fun stuff to post?  It's fairly easy to change, and we can always edit it later if we need to.

In fact, Nightmare sent me a draft of the Getting Involved page awhile back which I still haven't put up on the site.  I'll do that tomorrow.

The last item in the highlights scroll is clipped in Firefox.  See attachment.
The clock is half an hour ahead.
The highlights really, really need to be synced to the forum highlights or at the very least changed to something more recent like the Inferno and MVPs releases.
Edit:  The Who We Are page could include bits about TCs like Diaspora, TBP, WCS.

I think we also desperately need a big ol' link to the forums.  The only way a newbie would know they existed is if they bothered to check through the drop-down menus.

That and wiki-style fast editing for selected community members, would probably do a lot of good.

This is good, we might have critical mass now to get some community content. :)  I did some editing this evening on the main page, and I'm in touch with Sandwich on some things (such as the highlights, and a few hurdles I ran into) that are currently in progress.

Syncing the highlights with the forum is going to be a bit complicated, code-wise, but for the HLP moderators it should be simpler.  The process will switch to posting a highlight on the front page using Craft, rather than posting a thread in the forum.

If anyone who is a HLP moderator would like the ability to post highlights on the front page, let me know and I'll set you up with an account.  Extra points if you want to copy some of the highlights from the Highlights forum to the front page.

2 things on the main site:
-Why is there an Ancient ships pic to celebrate the release of a campaign without any ancients (SAH)?
-The order of entries seems a bit messed up; I think the "Unleash your inner starfighter pilot" thing should be always on top, currently it's MVPs - FS advertisement - S:AH, which is neither chronological nor importance wise sorted.

1) That's my bad
2) I think it's cause they're both sickied

EDIT: Fixed.  MVPs is no longer stickied, however (no way around it that I can see).

-Could FSMods be added to the top nav bar again? Without the link in the "news" (which has been up for long enough now) it's much harder to find the site.
-QuckLinks is visible even when I'm not logged-in.

That I don't think can be fixed.  The top nav bar links are not tied to the forum login.

What's the purpose of Quick Links, anyway? If you log-in normally, you would see them directly at the top of the page anyway. The only reasonable thing would be that you hit them while not being logged-in, and get redirected immediatly once you entered username and password.
