Dear gods...please...help me!
Okay, okay, it goes like this...  I need to uninstal that damned Norton Internet Security program to get my connection working properly (at the moment, I can't use hotmail or IM services.  Gods it's a pain!).  Problem is, it asks for a CD we don't have to take the program out.  I can't take it out through explorer because it seems to load automatically, and thus, has several different files running that I can't seem to disable with the task manager.  I need this porgram removed.  Any help, through here or PM will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you all.

Get a startup editing program to edit what programs start on startup... then take norton off on that.

OR

if you run win2k kill the process that is related to it....

OR

delete the program :p

Number one sounds good...  Tried number 2, isn't working.  Says I'm not allowed to.  --;;  As for number three...that's kind of my entire goal here.  If I could delete the program, I would.

Have you tried the right click/delete method?

It's messy, but it works. For instance, once my little bro installed Atlantis: Search for the Journal (he didn't know what he was doing, ok?!) anyways, it still won't install. So I just left it alone in the system, and deleted it the other way.

If I understand you correctly, then there are two was to remove it, from memory....

(1)  (bottom lower left on task bar) click start, then click on programs... In this list you will see (startup) click startup... If a norton virius scanner is in the list, you should be able to disable it from there.....
If you have never used the dos prompt then I advise you not to do this..
(2) You will have to do this one from the DOS prompt  C:\ ... You can get there from (startup, programs) click on MS-DOS prompt, make sure you exit from the windows directory  one word of warning, first, make a backup copy of your autoexec.bat and save it as autoexec.sav or something that isn`t already on your c drv From the keyboard type) edit autoexec.bat   From here you will be able to see if there are any lines that have reference to the norton virius scanner.... (example) C:\NORTON\ or C:\NU one of these should be present... all you really need to do here is to put an (rem) statment (example) rem C:\NORTON\     I`m not the best at explaning but I hope these examples may help, or if someone on the board  can explain it better than my gibberish directions, please feel free....

i've had the same probelm.. not asd bad, i just can't get it off my damn comp cuz it can't find the files to uninstall and i don't have "security access" to delete it or something and it won't virus scan tho at all cuz it can't find the files to do that... but its not causing anyharm, so i keep it on i guess. Which reminds me i need to get mcaffee from my friend...

Good Lord, the exact same thing happened to me! The CD came on a cereal box, and it's impossible to uninstall.

Yea call me hardheaded, because I formated my harddrive to remove all the crap that was being loaded into memory and not to mention my defragmenting program going bonkers on me... Took me three days of being off line before I had everything that I wanted on it up and running again, but hey, my defragmenting program is running as it should, which is a plus...  It runs now without the bothersom crashes (desktop and black screens)that go hand in hand with a poorly maintained file system .... And I dumped the norton virius scanner and istalled ver. 4.0 fix it utilities, at least I don`t have to pay for updated virius definisions....:D

Uh......why?

Start -> Run -> regedit -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Run -> Delete anything you don't want to boot up.

or even better and easier:

START  -> RUN -> type in "msdosconfig"
then just mess around with it... it has a 'startup' option where you can select/deselect any programs you want to run at startup, and that affects the regedit entry that an0n mentioned
