A Fellow Scholar!....EXCELLENT!

BTW you mean 5 INCLUDING Gandalf.

Saruman
Gandalf
Radagast

and two others that went east for another (untold) purpose
Hatred ever kills, love never dies such is the vast difference between the two. What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred.

What?! You're saying Sauron was a Balrog? Read the book again.

They were Alatar and Pallando, the Blue Istari, chosen by the Vala Oromë. Their names do not appear in the books because as soon as they got to Middle Earth they went to the far east, to work just like Radagast and Gandalf (helping the people in the battle against Sauron).

Also, Morinehtar and Romestamo were their alternative names. It's said that they arrived a long time before the other three Istari.

Tolkien never said istaris were maiar, that's just people's wild guess, coz they always want to find liks with stuff and others. From what I know, Istaris are Istaris, and nobody knows where they come from.

I've read them all countless times, silmarillion inculded, and it's stated nobody knows where they come from. Maybe it's an error of translation tho, so i'd be glad if you quote the part where it's said istaris are mayars.

As soon as Styxx brings back my copy of The Silmarillion I will. This is just an indirect reminder for him to do it.

Read Unfinished Tales, there's a short but sweet little essay on the Istari (and another on the Palantir). It states quite plainly thatthe Istari were of the angelic order, the Maiar, but since that was never finsihed and published by Tolkien himself (it was actually one of the last Middle-earth bits that he wrote) it's of questionable 'officialness'.

Oh yes, and let's not forget that the Balrogs were also of the angelic order, spirits of lesser power then the Maiar but similar all the same. Just like Sauron, they were corrupted by Morgoth and were named the Balrogs.

And just a small request, let's keep the plot revealage to a minimum, yes? Be considerate, folks. The whole Gandalf thing is a bit tricky, so let people find out for themselves

Lastly, if anybody wants to have a Tolkien trivia match, I'm right here...

I read the unfinished tales only one, I should clean the dust away from them and read them again I guess. but there was weird things in it, that are contradictory with what tolkien said, so I couldn't take it too much for granted.

Yes, well you know what he was like. Change one tiny detail and he'd have to rejig the whole bloody thing to fit perfectly.

Now, the Narn I Hin Hurin, that was long as fairly pointless. I mean yes, Turin did the deed an' all, but otherwise Tuor was a far more interesting character (as were his descendants ;7), but Tolkien seemed intent on making the Narn as long winded as possible... oh well, that's genius for you...

And the whole Elfwine thing, that was confusing. I've only got History of Middle-earth part five but the stuff in there about the Erriol family and the legend of Sheaf and the Lombards and stuff was hella weird...

I was saying Sauron was a servant of Morgoth, such as the Balrogs were servant of Morgoth.

"a" balrog, it's not some famous character, it's a species, some kind of spirit of the fire.
